When he returned to the palace, he found Serenity hard at work on her laptop in their bedroom, video chatting with Jade. He could see the tension in her shoulders, and knew that she was worried about the success of their line during Paris Fashion Week, no matter how hard she tried to hide it from him. It was hard on her to not be completely involved in the process.
He had learned a great deal about her on their long honeymoon, including the fact that she could only enjoy relaxing for a short time before she needed to work again. She had definitely enjoyed his efforts to keep her entertained, but now he was happy to also support her in pursuing her art in a way that fulfilled a very real need in her. Managing the dual focuses of their lives would be a challenge, but he would go to any lengths to support her.
Coming up behind her, he kissed her neck. Serenity bent her head to the side and gasped in response. “Alex!”
“Good evening, Jade.”
“Hello, Your Highness.” Jade’s voice was full of laughter and affectionate teasing. She had completely forgiven him for the hurt he’d caused Serenity, going so far as to tell him so on their wedding day.
“Serenity told me to make sure she didn’t work too late, so have you ladies discussed everything you needed to?”
“I’m good,” Jade said. “Serenity is just nervous, but I’ve got this.”
Alexios smiled at her. “Excellent. Good night, Jade.”
Jade’s laughter rang out until he closed Serenity’s laptop, cutting it off.
“What are you doing, darling?” she asked, standing up and putting her arms around his neck.
He ran his hands up and down her sides, massaging her tense muscles. “Helping you relax. You look very tense.”
“You seriously want me to believe this is all intended for my benefit?”
Grinning, he bent and pushed aside the wide neckline of her nightgown to kiss her shoulder. “I am your humble servant.”
She chuckled. “There’s nothing humble about you.” But then she put her hands on either side of his face and urged him to look at her. “But there is something different about you tonight.” She peered deep into his eyes. “What is it?”
“I’m happy to be home again.” he said, not wanting to inflict her with bad memories. “Our home.”
She smiled. “Home is wherever we’re together.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her off the floor. “Yes. Being together is just what I had in mind, so I’m not going to let you run away again, just so you know.”
She kissed him. “Just so you know, I stopped running away the moment you were mine.”
