They were the last three to be voted into this charter.
The last of this generation.
My eyes drift across the bar, to the table in the corner where four other men sit. They were lost too and a whole lot broken, scouring the country from charter to charter—never sticking in one place.
Too afraid.
Too wary.
Too fucking jaded.
Four former nomads now have a home.
I look at the table next to them and to the men who sit there, Blackie and Riggs.
Two men, three chairs—always leaving a seat for our fallen brother, Bones.
Gone, but never forgotten.
Tearing my eyes away from them, I stride down the narrow hallway and enter the chapel.
They still don’t have a proper table—just a bunch of old restaurant tables that have been pushed together—but it works for them. In the center of the tables sits the meat mallet.
That works too.
Wolf and Pipe both look at me, neither of them saying a word as I pull out a chair. Pipe pushes an empty shot glass in front of me and Wolf takes the bottle of whiskey, filling my glass, then Pipe’s and lastly his own.
Yesterday would’ve been Jack Junior’s birthday. He would’ve been twenty-seven. Yesterday also makes four years since Wolf’s youngest son, Frankie’s, death.
That’s right.
Frankie Scotto passed away on the same day my beloved son was born.
Pipe raises his shot glass.
Yesterday was also the day he married his first wife, Oksana, who perished the day our original clubhouse blew up.
“To the ones we loved and lost,” he rasps.
“Here, here,” Wolf says, lifting his glass.
“May they rest in peace,” I add, my glass joining theirs.
We knock back the shots, turning the glasses upside down and placing them on top of the table. Then we bow our heads in silence.
Thirty years ago, three punk ass kids who came from broken homes met.
They had no idea they’d later rule the streets of two boroughs.
They had no fucking clue what they would build.
They just knew they were brothers.
And brothers, they remain until the day they rest with those they lost.
