  A New Day

  Up at the lake,

  A new day begins,

I’ve a hot cup of coffee,

  My favorite blend,

  With my fishing hat on,

Rod and reel in my hand,

  It’s the start of vacation,

  For this lucky man,

  Meanwhile in the city,

  A new day begins,

  The race is on,

  But the clock will win,

  Hurry and hustle,

Are the words of the day,

  Mind and muscle,

  Are earning the pay,

  Mid-day at the lake,

  I hang up my hat,

  A trout dinner for lunch,

  An afternoon nap,

  Meantime in the city,

  It’s a fast food meal,

  The voice of a broker,

  Is making a deal

  While up at the lake,

  There’s an afternoon breeze,

  My hammock will sway,

  Birds sing in the trees,

  Meanwhile in the city,

  There’s an afternoon rush,

  The traffic will build,

  And the drivers will fuss,

  But nevertheless,

  Day comes to an end,

  Over lake and over city,

  The sun sets again.

  Our Little Town

  There’s not much to say,

  About our little town,

  It’s bordered by fields,

  Of sweet corn abound,

  And everyone knows,

  Everyone else,

And if you walk far enough,

  You’ll run into yourself,

  All joking aside,

  We’ve paid our dues,

  The names of our casualties,

  Have appeared in the news,

  And the colors wave proudly,

  Above the town hall,

  Symbolizing the freedom,

  Enjoyed by us all,

  Mother bakes on Saturday,

  Four sweet apple pies,

  While Daddy plays softball,

  With the children outside,

  And the little white church,

At the top of the hill,

  Can brag every Sunday,

  That every seat’s filled,

  There’s no traffic or crime,

  To make people nervous,

  Fried chicken’s for lunch,

  Right after church service,

  And on every front porch,

  There’s an old rocking chair,

  And many a good nap,

  Has been taken there,

  Now there isn’t a need,

  For high speed Internet,

  Because nobody here,

  Owns a computer yet,

But we like it that way,

  It’s a throwback in time,

  Where the only blackberries,

  Still grow on the vine,

So if you’re in a hurry,

  And want to slow down,

  Stop by and visit,

  Our little town.

  What Shall I Say

  I tried to think,

  Of what to say,

  And write it down,

  In such a way,

  That all my words

  Were soft and mellow,

  Like Henry Thoreau

  Or Henry Longfellow

  I veered away,

  From thoughts of woe,

  And themes of horror,

  Like Edgar Allen Poe,

  I thought of mountains,

  High and steep,

  I thought of oceans,

  Vast and deep,

  Of butterflies,

  And birds, and bees,

  Of sycamore,

  And old oak trees,

  Of snow and hail,

  And wind and rain,

  Of chilidogs,

  And baseball games,

  Of tiny pups,

  Piled up asleep,

  A Florida orange,

  Juicy and sweet,

  Of red sunsets,

  And starry skies,

  A silvery moon,

  A bright sunrise,

  Yet I stored,

  My pen away,

  For, I couldn’t think,

  Of what to say.

  King Toela

  King Toela’s throne,

  Was like a folding chair,

  Which he took with him,

  Almost everywhere,

  And from his mouth,

  Commands would flow,

  Assuring King Toela,

  He was in full control,

  And those he encountered,

  Were to follow his rule,

  For King Toela believed,

  They were all stupid fools,

  For only King Toela,

  Knew everything,

  Why do you think,

  He made himself King,

  But King Toela’s pride,

  Had mislead him for years,

For the space was quite hollow,

  Between King Toela’s ears,

  And none of his commands,

  Or false sense of control,

  Could stop the events,

  About to unfold,

While the King rode his horse,

  One nice afternoon,

  A snake was preparing,

  To lower the boom,

For the snake spooked the horse,

  The horse threw the King,

  Down an embankment,

  Into a ravine,

  And his fall was fatal,

  As only fate knows,

  Ending the reign,

  Of the great King Toela.

  You Can Depend On Me

  I know what’s right,

  And I do right completely,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  I use good judgment,

  And I wait patiently,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  I’m always there,

  When I’m supposed to be,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  When others quit,

  I’ll keep trying,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  I’ll
never lie,

  Cheat, or steal,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  When others don’t care,

  I’ll be your friend,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  A wealth of good character,

  Is like riches to me,

Yes, you can depend on me,

  If challenged by woe,

  Or saddled by strife,

  I’ll take the responsibility,

  For my own life,

Yes, you can depend on me.

  Pictures

  Pictures of you,

  Pictures of me,

  Pictures are taken,

  Of all we can see,

  Pictures of birthdays,

  And other celebrations,

  We place in an album,

  For future visitations,

  And often a picture,

  Will capture the soul,

  And live in the moment,

  A subject may hold,

  And the picture portrays,

  Without reservation,

  The people and events,

  Of past times and places.

  Humming Bird Feeder

  Beautiful flower,

  Nectar so sweet,

  You satisfy completely,

  Whenever I eat,

  And should you become empty,

  Someone takes you in,

  And when you return,

  I can eat once again.

  Three Trees

In my dream I saw three trees,

  Their trucks partially cut,

And as I watched I felt the power,

Of an ill wind coming up,

The first tree wobbled in the wind,

Then went crashing to the earth,

The second tree, like a domino fell,

From the tremor of the first,

I felt the sadness fill my heart,

But there was nothing I could do,

For somehow I knew a similar fate,

  For the third was overdue.

  Far Away Angels

A far away angel is an angel,

  Who rarely visits earth,

For to do so means he must remain,

With those who labor and work,

  And though it seems unusual,

  It is the heaven’s rule,

And if a far away angel resides nearby,

Just think of the good he’ll do.
