pulled her off the railings before they plummeted. She was crying, the tears rolling uncontrollably down her face. I took her in my arms, and together we slid across the floor to the adjacent wall.

  For an hour we sat there, our mutual tears blending with the grime upon our shirts. Finally, other squad cars arrived, and soon the house was filled with officers, agents and crime scene investigators. They questioned us, and I gave the best descriptions I could render. When we were finished, I carried Lexi out.

  On our way down the stairs, we stopped short when we saw a photographer taking pictures. I turned Lexi away from the scene and slowly carried her outside. Behind us, the flash of the photographer’s bulb was illuminating the body of Alexandretta, her body surrounded by a pool of blood.
