Haunted Hearts

Ruby turned politely with a customer service grin. “Sorry, we don't sell costumes he--”

Her eyes widened when Lynda dropped the hood of her coat.

  “Lyn...?” she whimpered.

  “Hi, babe.”

Ruby licked her lips. “I thought you...You said you couldn't come until Thanksgiving. Did you finish your semester early?”

  “Actually...I transferred.”

“You did what?” Ruby's eyes welled with tears as she covered her quivering lips. “What do you mean?”

“I got a job in admissions at the university. I live here now.”

She choked on a sob as she extended her arms, pulling Lynda into a hug. “You moved to Ireland?”

“Just for you, babe. Just for you.”

“I can't believe you did this...”

Lynda held Ruby as she cried. She couldn't stifle the tears surfacing and she didn't want to—she let them fall as they would if she were alone. She no longer felt the tension of her previous home or the pressure of chugging like a train toward a goal.

She had Ruby—and that was all that mattered.

“I figured I would catch one of your tours,” Lynda said tearfully. “And I wanted to see you before I got settled in.”

  “But where will you live?”

  “I'll find a place.”

“No, you can stay with me. I have a nice cottage on the outskirts of the city. It's a little drive from here, but it's close to the university.”

Lynda bit her lower lip as she pulled from the hug. “You... You really mean that?”

  “With all my heart, babe.”

  “Ruby...I love you.”

  “And I love you.”

When their lips met, Lynda swore her heart exploded. She could feel her hair rising as if it were tickled by static and her shoulders shaking as happy sobs chilled her body. It could have very well been the chilly weather of Ireland, but it could have been Ruby, too. And she would be happy to blame either one.

She pulled from the kiss with a huge grin. “Hey, your next tour starts soon, right?”

Ruby nodded while carefully wiping beneath her eyes. Lynda procured a tissue from her pocket and handed it to Ruby.

Ruby thankfully accepted it and wiped her running eyeliner. “Yes, it starts in about twenty minutes.”

“I'd love to see you in action.”

“Oh, you might not like the subject matter.”

Lynda wrinkled her nose. “I don't care about the subject matter. I'm interested in what interests you.”

“Oh, babe. That means so much. Are you sure?”

  “I'm totally sure.”

Ruby smiled warmly. “Hey, I have ten minutes to spare. Do you want me to get you a cup of coffee from the employee lounge?”

  “I'd love that.”

Ruby nodded and started heading away from the lobby.

  Lynda took her hand. “Hey.”

“What's up, babe? Are you okay?”

“You know, we just leveled up.”

  Ruby grinned. “We sure did.”
