I scoffed. “He thinks I’m an escort? Are you kidding?”

He grinned. “I didn’t mean it like that, but that’s funny. No, he just can’t figure out how I got a girl like you to like me.”

I looked him over, watched his eyes and how the lights of the tree reflected in them and felt my heart stutter and stomach dance. “No, that makes sense. I should totally get paid for dating you. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure if you could afford me.”

“I dunno, after what we did in bed I think you should pay me.”

“Are we really going to talk about what happened in that bed in front of a Christmas tree? I’m game.”

“No. Stop. Stop it now. You are not going to pervert my Christmas memories,” he said with a laugh. He then pulled away from me and went to the tree. He picked up a wrapped package and came back with it. “Instead, open this.”

  “Shouldn’t this wait until morning?”

  “It is morning.”

“You know what I mean, you goof.”

He shoved the package into my hands. “Just open it.”

“You poisoned it, didn’t you? You just want enough time to hide my body.”

“Dad is already out back digging the ditch.”

“Ouch,” I said and tore into the wrapping. Inside was a box of blue and green. I lifted the lid to find a small, light green tinted crystal on a silver chain. I pulled it out and held it up to the light. It was stunning. “Wow… where did you—why?”

“Saw it and thought of you. Plus, it has this.” He reached down and lifted the crystal up and to the side. The light from the tree created a faint holographic image on the wall. It was a picture of Winter, Nina, Me, Ziller, Merigold, Sera, and Marcus. We were all laughing at something and I couldn’t quite place location of the picture which didn’t surprise me as we all looked drunk.

“It’s from your birthday party,” Marcus said. “It’s the happiest I’ve seen all of us at once. Do you hate it?”

I shook my head and felt tears burn at my eyes. “No, it’s wonderful. Thank you.” I pulled him over and kissed him and wondered how a month that had started out so bad came to such a good place in the end.
