Invasion at Bald Eagle

by Kris Ashton

Richard walked between two of the tables—between two spurs, with no more than a six-inch gap either side—and stood at one of the creature’s heads. He gave Bert a knowing grin, as if he should be crowned the cleverest bastard this side of Pluto.

  “What?” Bert said, annoyed.

“I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when we dragged this specimen out of someone’s basement. I thought I had to be imagining things. Take a close look.”

Bert shuffled the long way around the tables, not much wanting to humor Richard and definitely not wanting to get near those spurs. When he got beside Richard at the head of the table, he leaned forward cautiously, trying to see over the tip of his nose and not clap his hands over his ears. All at once, his irritated expression crumbled away and his mouth dropped open.

Richard said, “It’s her, isn’t it?”

Bert couldn’t breathe. Hidden away behind the creature’s steel countenance, like a bust of the Queen on an old English coin, was a familiar face.

  “Sharna,” he said.
