Hot Mess: A Players Rockstar Romance (Players #1)

Good.

“She’s stunning,” Matt said, matter-of-fact. “That blue dress? Yowza. And I had a talk with her earlier.”

Ash tossed him an unimpressed look that made me laugh.

“Your girlfriend’s a smoke show,” I informed him. “Get used to it.”

“She’s lovely,” Summer told him. “And her head’s in the right place. By that I mean she’s all about you.”

“Good,” Ash said, “cause I’m pretty sure I’m gonna ask her to marry me.”

Well, that shut us all up.

I watched to see how Summer took that. We were in a band now, so jealousy wasn’t really gonna work. She definitely seemed caught off-guard, at least momentarily.

When she recovered, she said, “Well, by the look of things, I’m pretty sure she’ll say yes.”

  “You serious?” Matt asked him.

“Yeah,” Ash said. “I mean, not right this minute. I’m just saying.”

“Ashley Player with a wife…” Summer teased. “What is the world coming to?”

Then Ashley Player’s future wife materialized in her hot-as-fuck blue dress, arm-in-arm with pregnant Katie Mayes, who was arm-in-arm with Dylan’s girlfriend, Amber. They joined us, and Jesse and Dylan weren’t far behind.

The table had a few more rounds as people came and went. The whole time, Danica sat in Ash’s lap. They looked good together. His edgy vibe, and hers all soft and pretty.

Matt was pretty chill, not a lot to say, but Summer kept the drinks and the conversation flowing.

It was a good balance, so far. Good chemistry.

Would still have to see if we could make good music.

  I was hopeful, though.

  I liked my new band.

And one thing was for sure, we definitely had the look.

It wasn’t just Summer. I knew what I brought to the image department, and honestly, Ash and Matt were as good-looking as I was. I was a cocky bastard, but I could admit that.

Major difference between us, though, was that I was aware of the way chicks looked at me. Like all the fucking time. Whereas Ash and Matt seemed less aware, or maybe less interested.

Myself, I was always scoping the room, always looking for the next sure thing… or whatever next thing caught my interest.

Thing was, right now, nothing was really catching my eye.

So, as the night rolled on, I just sat back… and entertained myself by observing my new bandmates.

As far as I knew, Matt was as single as Summer was. Ash was the only one of us who had a partner, and he seemed devoted to her. And like Summer said, Danica was all about him; from what I could tell, she only had eyes for her man.

This was a very good thing.

Guys—musicians, roadies, security, fans, fucking everyone—would eat her alive once we got on the road if she wasn’t totally sure where her interests lay. And if I’d ever gotten the sense that her interests were… wandering… I’d have no qualms about telling Ash.

Not that I’d enjoy telling him, but I’d have to.

Had already experienced too many wives and girlfriends stirring up drama between band members over that kind of shit.

  Never a good scene.

Just one of the reasons I never bothered taking a woman with me on the road. I’d never understood the point of bringing a girlfriend on tour.

Why bother, when there was so much other fun to be had?

  Like right now…

It was Saturday night. I really should’ve been looking for someone to fuck, rather than hanging with all these people I couldn’t fuck.

But I really wasn’t in the mood for some random screw anyway.

Not when there was a better option.

An option I shouldn’t have even been considering, much less hoping for.

I hung out for a while longer, but I didn’t really drink. Not tonight. I just nursed one more beer, keeping myself sober enough that I could drive after this with a clear head.

You know, in case I was needed.

Sometime around one a.m., I broke down and checked my phone. I’d turned it off for the wedding ceremony and never bothered turning it back on. And I knew why.

I feared the temptation that would be there, waiting for me, as soon as I looked.

And I feared that if it wasn’t there… I’d fucking flip out.

But when I turned it on, there it was. A Snapchat notification, with her name on it.

  She’d sent me a pic.

I didn’t open it, at first.

I already knew I’d fucked up—one of the worst ways a man could fuck up, short of committing some major felony. But since then, I’d been avoiding her as best I could.

  Really, I had.

But what the hell. She’d sent me a photo.

And I really wasn’t that strong a man.

  I opened it.

It was a pic of her tits. Those big, plump, bouncy tits of hers, spilling out of her lacy little baby-pink bra. And one sentence.

Courteney: I need you right now.

I read it again and again, fucking relishing those words out of her sweet head.

  I was going to hell.

  For sure.

What I’d done had fucking sealed it. I’d opened a door I had no business opening, and trespassed right through.

It was never a good idea to touch your best friend’s sister behind his back. Never.

Especially if she was his little sister.

As in, way too young for you.

And you knew she was a virgin.

And you knew you were a dirty bastard who wasn’t good enough for her…

And you knew you’d probably fuck her anyway.

I stole another look at that pic, at her plump, cherry-red nipples, poking through the lace like she’d been playing with them while she thought about me. And I was so hard, I probably could’ve come in my pants with just a little friction.

  No one’s perfect, right?

I swallowed and messaged her back.

Me: Be there as soon as I can.

Then I said my goodbyes, made some excuse, and hopped in my car, speeding off to make one of those major life mistakes that I knew was so fucking wrong… it was just way too filthy to resist.

  Playlists

If you’ve read the Dirty series, then you probably know I make a playlist to go along with each book.

When I set out to write Hot Mess, I actually said to myself, “Maybe no playlist for this one. Maybe I’m done with playlists.”

Uh-huh. Then while I was writing the book, I put together ONE OF THE LONGEST PLAYLISTS YET. And then I made 4 MORE PLAYLISTS (known as the vortex playlists, for Ash, Summer, Matt and Danica).

Clearly, I have a sickness. Lol.

As usual, some of the songs on the Hot Mess playlists are mentioned in the book; others are songs that captured the feel of a certain scene or that I listened to while writing the book.

The playlists feature a lot of rock, of course—from classic rock to alternative to hard rock and everything in-between—but it also includes other genres that I, and the characters in the book, enjoy as well.

I hope you enjoy these (5!!) playlists as much as I’ve loved putting them together! And I hope the vortex playlists give you a deeper glimpse into these characters’ “blood, guts and soul.”
