  DAME JUDI DENCH, popular English actress who now plays ‘M’ in the Bond films, born 1934. So powerful is her presence that she won an Oscar for just eight minutes on screen as Elizabeth I in the film Shakespeare in Love.

  Born in Scarborough

  LORD LEIGHTON (1830–96), sculptor and artist, who became President of the Royal Academy and was the first English artist to be made a peer. He died the day after receiving the honour.

  CHARLES LAUGHTON (1899–1962), actor. In 1934 became the first English actor to be awarded an Oscar, voted Best Actor for The Private Life of Henry VIII.

  SIR BEN KINGSLEY, born Krishna Bhanji in 1943. His father was of Indian descent, and Kingsley won a Best Actor Oscar in 1982 for his portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough’s film Gandhi.
