Salazar

None of the men could have imagined such a thing.
The tiller stems shot out in many directions. Like vines, their shoots and arms searched for something to which they could attach. Determined to reach for the sun, the plants grew as tall as Salazar… and then even taller.
Looking around, Salazar and his men found that the growth happened everywhere that the toxin-filled water had soaked into the earth. The wildly growing plants were prolific and soon climbed over the rubble while their root system buckled the broken pavement even more.
"Is any of this edible?" Jesse asked.
"I have no idea," Sam admitted. "I have never seen anything like it, but I do not believe that vines can be eaten."
Jesse took out his knife, intending to test a sample, and grabbed one of the nearby shoots. As soon as he touched it, he let go and yelled out in pain, "Damn! It stings like fire!"
While, Sam looked at Jesse's hand to assess the seriousness of his injury, Jesse sucked in his breath as the fiery welts continued to grow, "You need to get Sue Ellen to take a look at this right away. It is getting worse by the minute," Sam worried.
But even Jesse was distracted from the pain when he and Sam heard Salazar anxiously called out, "Guys, guys, look at that!" He pulled at their jackets to get their attention and pointed to a nearby storm drain.
A huge rat clawed and struggled to escape the small opening. Its head twisted to the right, then to the left as it tried to force itself through the opening, but its body was too big to fit. And, it was no wonder because the rat was as a large as a coyote. Affected by the pink-stained water, its eyes glowed red like the Kolowa.
"Ah, hell no!" Jesse exclaimed, and quickly forgetting about his injured hand, he kicked at the rat forcing it back into the drain.
"That can't be good," Sam expressed the worried look on Salazar's face.
"No, it can't be good at all," Salazar agreed.

About the Author
2018 Indie B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree
Multi-Award-winning author, Chariss K. Walker, M.Msc., Reiki Master/Teacher writes both fiction and nonfiction books with a metaphysical and spiritual component. Her fiction expresses a visionary/metaphysical message that illustrates growth in a character's consciousness while utilizing a paranormal aspect. Her nonfiction books share insight, hope, and inspiration. Even though Chariss writes dark-fiction about insanely dark topics, such as sexual abuse, incest, pedophilia, sexual assault, and other inappropriate dinner conversation, there is always an essential question of the abstract nature that gives a reader increasing awareness and perception. All of her books are sold worldwide in eBook, paperback, and many are in large print.
