Assassin Zero

“Okay. Yes. Thank you.” It was all he could think to say.
Outside, on the streets of Baltimore, Zero walked. He wasn’t heading to his car. He wasn’t heading anywhere. He walked until he didn’t know where he was, and then he walked further.
He passed faces. Some smiled. Others laughed. Some argued, and some minded their own business.
Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
He wondered if any of these people had just discovered that their battle was a losing one.
His own brain was going to kill him, and he had no idea when.
What would he tell his daughters? What would he tell Maria?
Nothing, he decided. Both of his girls were at home waiting for him. Tomorrow he had a dinner date with Maria. He had a head full of memories as an assassin that he still wasn’t sure were real or not. He clearly did not know everything there was to know about himself, and he might not ever, at this rate.
He was going to start forgetting things permanently. And not just how to load a gun. The faces of those he loved. Maybe their names. The time spent with them. The very memories he had clung to in what he thought would be the final moments of his life, in the nuclear facility.
And all that would happen before he died.
Zero stopped. Across the street was a bag lady, a nest of gray hair heaped atop her head, shopping cart at her side, holding a cardboard sign aloft for anyone who would pause to read it.
It said: THE END IS NIGH.
“It certainly seems that way,” he murmured.
All the more reason to enjoy the time he had left with those he loved. He could have died a hundred times by now, maybe more. He should have died a few times just in the past week.
Zero made a vow to himself at that very moment: he would spend his remaining days doing whatever he could to make the world a better place. Not just for him, but for those who came after. For his daughters. For the survivors, like Maria and Alan and Strickland.
If his battle was going to be a losing one, then he would do whatever he could to make damn sure the war was won.

DECOY ZERO
(An Agent Zero Spy Thriller—Book #8)
“You will not sleep until you are finished with AGENT ZERO. A superb job creating a set of characters who are fully developed and very much enjoyable. The description of the action scenes transport us into a reality that is almost like sitting in a movie theater with surround sound and 3D (it would make an incredible Hollywood movie). I can hardly wait for the sequel.”
--Roberto Mattos, Books and Movie Reviews
