And man, it’d been tough to keep the sex of their baby a secret for the past few weeks when she and Justin found out at the ultrasound.
“I don’t care if there are ghosts and goblins as the decorations or not,” Ashley said. “All I care about is if there is pink or blue inside.”
The outside of the cake had black fondant on it with white Casper-type ghosts floating around and pink and blue baby rattles. She’d thought it was a cute touch and hoped to get some more gender reveal cake orders in the future. She’d have to make sure she got a lot of pictures once she cut into it.
She looked over to see Linda and Bruce Cambridge sitting together. They were at Justin’s parents’ house for a Sunday dinner to reveal the sex of their baby.
Bruce’s radiation was done, having finished last week. She’d made him his favorite pie to have for dessert too. She knew Justin’s family normally worked on Sundays and there were still a lot of people golfing even though it was pretty chilly out this time of year.
But they’d taken the time off for this and it was the first dinner with both families together.
She’d seen Riley’s family mixed in with hers yesterday and thought how lucky her brother was and hoped that she could have something like that someday.
And here she was, everyone together just waiting for her to cut into the cake.
“Let me do it,” Justin said, taking the knife from her hand. “I know you use knives a lot, but I’d rather not have a repeat in my ER.”
“That is truly my lucky knife now,” she said, remembering how they first met so many months ago.
“So it’s your ER now?” Kennedy asked Justin.
“It was official last week,” he said.
Even though the job had been offered to him, there was a lot of legal work and board final approval. He’d had to go back to Rochester for a few weeks to work and give his notice, then get his townhouse up on the market. Luckily it went under contract fast and there was no turning back now.
They were currently living above the spa but had their eyes open for a place of their own. At this point, she wasn’t in a hurry and didn’t want to jump on the first thing and it’s not like real estate was always popping up. They’d decided they wanted to be on the water...with a view of the mountains.
The best of both worlds again.
Justin put the knife in the center of the cake and then cut down, pulled it out and made a second cut, then pulled out the first piece to show the pink inside.
There was a lot of yelling and hugs. “Our daughters are going to be best of friends,” Riley said.
“I think they will be,” she said, taking her camera out. “Hang on, no cake yet. I need to show this for business.”
Trevor snorted. “I want cake. What flavor is it?”
“Strawberry,” she said. “If it was a boy we’d be eating a blueberry-flavored cake.”
Once all the slices were cut and handed out, Justin said, “Before you eat the cake…”
“Come on,” Logan said, laughing. “You two are horrible teases. First we can’t know the sex of the baby. Then we can’t eat the cake until everyone has a slice. Now you want to give a speech.”
“Hush,” Kennedy said, elbowing her husband. “Let him talk. This might be getting even better.”
She looked over at Justin to see what he was up to. “Ashley, where is it?” he said.
Justin’s sister got up and went to another room, then came back holding a bakery box in her hand.
“What’s that?” Taryn asked.
“Please don’t think I’m a traitor, but I couldn’t ask you to do this and I found the urge to have it be this way.”
He took the box from Ashley and pulled the cake out, then set it next to the gender reveal one. It was a white cake with the words “Will You Marry Me?” on the top. He’d done it in pink lettering to almost match the gender reveal cake inside. Talk about super sweet.
Her hands went to her mouth. “Is there a ring in the center of this one and we have to wait to see?” her father asked.
Justin laughed. “No. The ring is right here in my hand,” he said getting down on one knee. “So, what do you say, Taryn? The mother of my daughter. Will you marry me and be my wife?”
“Yes,” she said, going into his arms and hugging him. She turned to look at Trevor, “Not a shotgun proposal, right?”
Her brother hadn’t been so thrilled when he found out she was pregnant, but he came around fast when Riley pinched his arm.
“I told you before, he’s not intimidated by me. He’s his own man and knows what he wants.”
“He is,” Justin’s father said. “Seems he wants you, Taryn. Welcome to the family.”
The End!
