I stood in the hallway for what seemed like an eternity until I had finally gathered the courage to go back inside my room. The face was gone—thank God, or I would’ve sprinted out as if the devil were on my heels.
With great reluctance, feeling a mix of fear and annoyance, I closed the curtains, refusing to look at the back yard for any presence. I quickly changed into my pajamas and lay down in bed, pulling the blankets up to my nose.
Up till now, the signs were subtle. The faint music, the sense of being watched while I was standing in the graveyard, the uneasiness. But that face appearing out of nowhere, pressing against my window, that was anything but subtle. Thinking about it, the attic noises weren’t subtle either, but at least I could come up with some kind of explanation for them. For this face, there was no rational explanation.
I vowed to myself that tomorrow I would ask Nate if he had ever seen anything strange happening around the Academy. At least that would mean it wasn’t just me. Or me and Dante, who was walking on the borderline to insanity anyway.
I rested my head on the pillow, dozing off. Right before I fell asleep, realization hit me, and I bolted up straight.
The face was calling for help.
That was what it had mouthed at me earlier, the words I couldn’t understand.
“Help me.”
