  34. The term ‘bania’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘van.ij’ or ‘ban.ij’, which means merchant. The term is used to indicate all people who are involved in money lending and similar activities. The bania are vaishya according to the Chaturvanya system and are third in hierarchy after the brahmin and the kshatriya. The bania community is spread across different states in India like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, etc.

The term bania is also used pejoratively. Especially British colonial masters used the term to ridicule Mahatma Gandhi. In fact, Willingdon, the twenty-second viceroy and governor general of India, called Gandhi an ‘astute little political Bania’.

Even Congress leaders like C.R. Das and Maulana Shaukat Ali referred to Gandhi as ‘Wily Baiya’.
