He asks me to keep an eye on his line and gets me another beer, though. I take that opportunity to do what I need to do, quickly reaching into my pocket and hoping this crazy idea fucking works. I tie the thing on the end of his line and throw it back in, making sure he isn’t watching me. When he comes back, he hands over the beer and drops an ice cube down the back of my shirt. I laugh and think about throwing him into the lake, but that would kinda ruin my plans.
“Think you got something,” I say, nodding toward his fishing pole.
“Figures I get a bite as soon as I step away.”
I crack open the beer and try to keep my damn hand from shaking as I take a swig. Out of the corner of my eye I watch him reel in his line. I can tell by the confused expression on his face that he doesn’t know what’s on the end of it. He doesn’t get it until it’s hanging in front of him, catching the sunlight.
It’s not much. Just a simple gold band that my dad said belonged to my grandpa a long time ago. But as he realizes what it is—what it means—the look on his face makes me think I did all right. Even if it is the most country proposal ever.
“I know we’re both still figuring shit out, so I’m not saying we just up and do this thing tomorrow. But I want everybody to know that you’re mine, and I’m yours. You’re my best friend, Brandon. You’ve made my life better than I ever thought it could be. I wish I could make you all these crazy promises, but… I can promise to always be honest with you, to always fight for you, and to always love you.”
He stares, open-mouthed, at the ring. I can see the tears starting to glisten in his eyes. That has to be a good sign, right?
“So, what do you say?” I ask, my nerves getting the best of me. “Are you in?”
He looks at me finally, and that smile of his lights up my whole world. Adoring blue eyes focus only on me, and all the planning, all the anticipation is suddenly worth it.
“Yeah,” he says, emotion cracking his voice. “I’m in.”
I always thought the best thing I’d ever hear in my life would be some TV announcer saying I’ve been picked up by a pro team. But this right here? Those three words?
I wouldn’t trade them for the world.
