  “Mrs. Montgomery,” Richard began.

“No, milord, I’ve made up my mind. I said I cannot stand to work with him and I mean it. You’re welcome to him, milord.”

She turned to storm away, then stopped. Turning back to Richard, she said, “My lord, it has been an honor and a pleasure serving in this fine house.”

With that, she dropped her dishcloth on the floor and walked steadily down the passage and around the corner.

Gerald the footman looked at Ayles, his face pleading.

“Well,” said Ayles, “go after her.”

Without a word Gerald scurried down the passage, rounding the corner most ungracefully.

“She’s married, you know,” said Ayles.

  “I know, Ayles.”

“Her husband’s a fighter. Did you know that?”

  “I did not.”

“My lord, I shall put out two advertisements with your permission. One for a housekeeper, and another for a second footman.”

Richard rubbed his forehead and sighed.

“Do it, Ayles. And see that I’m not disturbed for the rest of the day.”
