Either way, it meant he was going to blame us no matter what we said.
“Lieutenant,” Leo began, and I realized he was going to try anyway. “Our friend Maddox needs medical treatment immediately, and we need to start searching for whoever did this to our teammates. Clearly, someone is targeting us because of our standing in the Tourney.”
“Are they indeed,” Zale sneered, his face filled with disgust. “I’ve heard enough of your lies. Knights, arrest these murderers.”
From the door behind him, several Knights appeared, their batons already out. I considered them for a moment—considered fighting my way out and making a run for it—but there were too many of them.
I slowly raised my hands, and then gave Leo a nod to do the same. A Knight approached me cautiously, reaching out to take my baton and pull it out of my belt, and then they rushed me, grabbing my arms and shoving me roughly to the ground.
I managed not to cry out as they wrenched my shoulder to shove my hands behind my back. I caught a glimpse of Leo being treated just as roughly, and then I was hauled up and shoved forward, stumbling with the violence of it.
As they continued to push me into the hall, I kept my hands clenched, and tried to maintain my calm. Getting angry now was counterproductive. If I wanted to get Leo and myself out of this, I needed to keep my wits about me.
Because otherwise, we were dead.
