“Let the children pay sometimes,” she says.
“Fine, fine,” he grumbles, putting everything back in his wallet. A moment later, he and my mother share a private grin.
I touch Sarah’s hand and smile.

Sarah and I are cozied up in the twin bed in her old room at her parents’ house. It’s a tight squeeze, but there’s nowhere else I’d rather be. Finally, after dim sum with my family and dinner in Ingleford with her family, I get to be all alone with her and hold her in my arms.
She rests her head on my chest and yawns. “It’s been a long day.”
“It has, though you woke up two hours later than usual.” Sarah closed Happy As Pie for the Easter weekend.
“True, but there was some vigorous love-making before I even got out of bed.”
“Such a hardship.”
She laughs and kisses my chin. “And so much food. I won’t need to eat for a week.”
“Same here.”
Tomorrow morning, Sarah will take me on a tour of the town. Her life is in Toronto now, but this is where she spent the first eighteen years of her life, and I want to know everything about her.
I already know so much. Like how freaking delicious all the food she makes is. Like the face she makes when she’s trying to work out a new recipe...and the face she makes when I slide inside her. I know there’s a freckle on the back of her left earlobe, and a small scar from a burn on the inside of her right wrist. I know she’s beautiful and driven; I know she will make things happen. Even when they don’t work out as planned, I will be there beside her.
I will always be there.
Because Sarah Winters is the best thing that ever happened to me. And I know I’m worthy of her affection, despite my flaws, and I’m not afraid of what we have, not anymore.
In two weeks, she’ll accompany me to Melinda’s wedding, and at the end of the summer, to Amrita and Holly’s wedding. The following summer, maybe our own wedding?
I know it’s early, but I’m already thinking about it.
But for now, I push those thoughts aside and focus on being in the moment with Sarah, who’s pulling my shirt over my head. I take off hers, and we lie together, skin against skin.
“I love you, sweetheart,” I murmur, cuddling closer, “and not just because you make the world’s best pear ginger crumble pie.”
She brought two for dinner, and despite all the food I’d eaten, I had seconds and was tempted to have thirds.
“Love you, too,” she says, “and not just because you brought me breakfast in bed this morning.”
I made her Hong Kong-style French toast—I’m becoming more adept in the kitchen—and a mug of coffee with two heart-shaped marshmallows, from the Lucky Charms box, of course.
“Or because of all those orgasms,” she adds. “Though they were pretty spectacular.”
“Mm, I could tell by the noises you made.” I turn out the light and kiss her cheek. “Goodnight, darling.”
Tomorrow will be another day I get to spend with Sarah, and I can’t wait.

Thank you to my editor, Latoya C. Smith, for helping me make this book the best it could be, and thank you to Flirtation Designs for the lovely cover!
To write this story, I had to do a little research on pies and running a bakery. (Not a hardship, I promise.) I want to thank Janelle at The Pie Commission and Vanessa at The Rolling Pin for answering my questions.
Thank you also to Toronto Romance Writers, as well as my husband and father, for all your support.
About the Author
Jackie Lau decided she wanted to be a writer when she was in grade two, sometime between writing “The Heart That Got Lost” and “The Land of Shapes.” She later studied engineering and worked as a geophysicist before turning to writing romance novels. Jackie lives in Toronto with her husband, and despite living in Canada her whole life, she hates winter. When she’s not writing, she enjoys gelato, gourmet donuts, cooking, hiking, and reading on the balcony when it’s raining.
