Emily smiled a genuine smile at him. “You know, it’s actually fine. I want you to take a picture, too. You’re right. There are some things worth documenting. But I want my gorgeous boyfriend in the picture. You’re not the only one who wants to brag.” She thought of what Grandma would say when she finally saw a picture of Akio. Probably something super inappropriate knowing Gran.
Akio’s ears tinged red. “Alright, together then.”
He positioned her in front of the plaque for the office building and had her hold her crushed roses gracefully underneath her chin. Then he laid his arm across her shoulders and held his phone out for a selfie.
“Okay, you ready?”
She looked into his eyes and felt a flood of contentment settle in. She had come all this way and been able to actually see her dream of becoming a mangaka come true. Well, at least it had started. Plus, she had the honor of meeting so many wonderful people along the way, including the man standing beside her. Emily knew she still had a long journey ahead of her before she could branch off on her own in the manga field, but now she knew that she had Akio at her side. Not to mention Michi and Hamada-kun, as well. Her heart burst with gratitude.
“Okay. Ready,” she replied, looking back at the camera.
He gave her that glorious half-smile. “Then…to new beginnings?” he asked.
“To new beginnings,” she answered with a smile.
And the click of the camera signaled a fresh start to the future.
Their future together.
