Penelope Woods writes dark sci-fi, horror, and uniquely gothic romance and reverse harem novels. She grew up in a family that loved the experience of going to Blockbuster together. As a young girl, she relished in “B” sci-fi horror films and fell into a world of dark fantasy. When she learned about smut, it was like a light bulb clicked on in her head. She started writing in 2016 and has never looked back.

  Oh, yes:

She may or may not have a bionic eye. But that’s a whole other conversation!

  Born Taken: Book Zero

My joy is of your doing, my hangover of your thorn; whatever side you turn your face, I turn mine, by your soul.

  -Rumi

  Chapter One

“Is this a dream, or have you come to kill my family?” Rae asks.

She rolls her knuckles over her eyes and watches the decorated soldier meander through the stables.

Soldier. That’s what they call them, anyway. But she knows the truth. They are slave traders. When they show their ugly faces, it’s time to run.

Gold spurs arch over the heels of his cavalier boots. Every wicked step he takes cracks the ground beneath him. Face hidden by the glare of the sun, he kneels, revealing a single, wilted rose.

“Just came for a brief talk,” he growls.

It doesn’t matter how dead that flower is. To Rae, it’s beautiful. One of a kind. This land is dead, and she has never seen one in her life.

Attempting to take the precious flower’s stem, Rae stumbles as he pulls back, wagging a thwarting finger in front of her eyes. Suddenly, his face is in full view, hideous scars glowing in the harsh sunlight.

“Careful. There are thorns,” he adds.

A chill shudders through her spine, and it doesn’t come from the sudden drop in temperature. She is young—too young to know about the ills of the world with full clarity, but old enough to understand the wrongs of alpha men.

Time and time again, she is told she’s special. One of the last fertile women on the planet. One of the few women who can actually give birth. A true miracle.

Her father had gone through much effort to shield her omega scent from the evil breeders who passed by during early morning shifts. But now, it’s obvious one has scented her out.

If this breeder moves any closer to her, he’ll smell her fruitfulness. Perhaps, he already has plans to take her.

Her heart races, neck stiffening. “Papa!” she calls out.

The man stays kneeling, placing his dirty finger against the smooth ridge above her lips, dragging down to expose her teeth.

Sniffing wildly, he presses the arch of his nose against her temple. One big inhale to terrify the life out of her.

“Lower your voice. Let’s surprise the old man,” he whispers, a deep, resonant tone.

  Quiet. Calm. Freezing Cold.

Distant thunderclouds collect into purple heaps, a building storm threatening to close them inside for the weeks ahead. The weather has been unnatural for a long time. There’s no telling when this will let up.

The orange haze of smoke and burning trash rise into the sky, reminding her of the constant warring caused by the noble Republic. Reminds her that this man’s one goal is to knot and ravage her ovaries.

Glancing up, she notices the medallions that grace his shoulders. Only generals and commanders have that much flair. He is more powerful than she first gathered.

Unfortunately, she is not just a victim of biology. She is a victim of customs too. She feels obligated to offer the breeder her family’s hospitality. It’s an obligation that comes with a heavy feeling of guilt.

To be fair, every province succumbs to their wretched, carnal hungers. How can one say no to the Republic? Somehow, looking away from the massacres in the near distance made Rae feel safer, as if her village’s homes are immune to all attacks as long as they kept their manners in check.

But there can only be one end to her beautiful farm village.

The omegas are the last commodity of a dying world. Naturally, the demand for sex, for blood and kin, created a market. But with no government oversight, the ruling class above the breeders grab as much as they can take.

They rule with an iron cock.

She is far too aware that, soon enough, breeders will prop open her thighs. Her pussy will be inseminated with the seed of someone she despises. That’s how it goes. In return, she will become the vehicle to usher in a new era of prosperity and growth.

Every omega is desperate for safety. They agree to the men’s commands, for that reason only. But Rae is not like the others. She won’t allow them to own her life.

She carefully glides her palms across her dress. Forcing a smile, she watches as the man stands, his boots scraping closer. His hand soon cradles her face, and in a rushed moment of panic, she understands he has her trapped.

His large hands, enclosed in the richly embroidered, dark leather g
auntlets take her slender white shoulders. His shiny locks of sable hair, cockerel feathers, and black lace, slowly shrouds his ugly and scarred face.

“I am Cassian,” he bellows. “Think of me as an… uncle.”

She chokes. “I understand,” she whispers, gravely.

  “You understand nothing,” he snarls.

Stepping into the light, the hardened alpha takes her hand like he is her new father. The compulsion to run is strong, but his thick palm tightens around her brittle fingers like a python.

Abruptly glancing at his hand, Rae notices the darkened tattoo of the insignia of his breeder pack. The Ouroboros Breeders. The snake eating its own tail. She’s seen that tattoo before. They’re the worst of the worst.

“I am the man of the night. The last one you see before you close your eyes,” he says.

Rae waverd, feeling her throat close. Unable to suck in another breath, she chokes and drops to her knees. “I’ve seen you before. I know you...”

He grins. “Then you will do what I ask of you, sweet child,” he whispers.

She despises the monster. Every drop of saliva and sweat compounds above his upper lip to leave a rich coat of filth. Voice thick with mucus, he opens his lips, reminding her of a fish she once saw floating, dead, in a nearby toxic lake.

But it isn’t his looks that bends her to nausea. It’s seeing the meaty flesh rising against the pocket of leather between his legs that makes her squirm.

Slowly, he unzips, swinging the pulverized mass of foreskin near her face. His sac hangs, beastly, in a tuft of unkempt hair. A slow and rich chortle catches at the edge of his throat, and his pupils widen with hunger.

  The smell is horrendous.

  “Oh God,” she cries out.

Rae shuts her mouth and writhes away from him. Slowly, he hides his flesh back into the leather satchel, groaning as he zips it closed. “You’re right. Perhaps I will wait until you are… ripe.”

In one instant, Cassian drains Rae’s energy with a vast smile. Plucking her from the ground, he brings her into his arms.

“Rest, child,” he says, warm against her ear.

Violated and alone, she wraps her arms around his neck. She does what she’s told to do, until she can’t take it anymore. A rush of panic hits her in the chest, and she digs her fangs into his porous flesh.

He stumbles forward like a buffoon, dropping her to clasp his hand over the wound. A pin prick of blood forms around a weak puncture.

Running for her life, headed for the Republic authorities, Rae stumbles against the dried grass. Tears splatter her face, forming into a mist in the surrounding air. She can feel him coming after her, hunting like the predator he longed to be. His masculine scent, musky and foul, follows her every turn.

Cassian’s voice shakes with each pounding step forward. “I can hear your heartbeat.”

He lays his hand across her shoulders. Ankles giving out, she collapses on the field. He looks at her as if she is his prey, and sinks his teeth outward with one thing on his decrepit mind.

“What is this place?” she asks.

The world has changed around her. The village is waving, breaking apart inside her mind. She feels like she is losing consciousness.

  Is she going crazy?

“The world is what I want it to be. I broke the world. Now, I create the rules,” he speaks. “You will spend a lot of time with me, darling. Not days. Not years. Decades. Do you understand that, sweetie-pie?”

He shakes her head until she understands. In this world, women are to be beaten and molded into obedient slaves. Sell-whores and mothers of destitution. Every omega taken is to be made a powerless object.

For a brief moment, her mind paints a picture of what her life could be if things were different: A life inside a peaceful village. Tending to the garden. A family…

Laughing, Cassian digs his fingers into the grass and dirt, smearing mud into her thick roots of hair. He lifts her by her dress, ripping the thin fabric enough to expose a cheek of flesh.

“Let us find daddy,” he says.

As they make their way up to the grass-laden entryway, Rae feels a brief lapse in time. Again, everything shifts. She becomes catatonic. Like a broken television set, her vision flickers chaotically.

Her eyes flutter open to a brightly lit, white room. As it comes into focus, she blinks, but she can’t move an inch.

  “Subject EC23 has resumed consciousness.”

A man with a blue specialist mask stands above her, breathing deep into stuffed nostrils. Every breath he inhales seems to give him jolts of unknown pleasure.

Another voice breaks the silence. A familiar voice. “She’s conscious?”

The doctor swivels his head to face the brute alpha. The alpha who was chasing her in her village. While glancing above at the screen, the doctor wipes his forehead. Why did he look so damn worried?

“It’s nothing we can’t fix, sir. What I worry about is her memory functionality. We can’t keep her under for very much longer,” the doctor says.

Hammering his fist against the wall, the devil-beast roars.

Rae’s eyes roll to take in her surroundings, and a muffled cry escapes her parched lips.

“You promised me this would work,” the breeder shouts.

“Cassian, the brain adapts to trauma like a body to a parasite, by slowly spreading around the affected areas of the mind until the rest of the functions follow. As soon as we alter her consciousness, she will beg you to knot her.”

  Cassian. So that’s his name.

“She still has some time to go before she is… ripe,” Cassian says. Lowering his voice, he whispers, “I have been dreaming about taking that satisfying first bite.”

Rae struggles to keep her eyes open. She notices the tubes that thread through her arms, now a blackened mass of bruising and tragic scars. She has the idea to claw them out, one by one, but she is overcome with such incredible pain she can only grunt with suffering.

  “Where am I?” she asks.

Cassian eyes her without an ounce of compassion. Cursing under his horrid and wafting breath, he turns the set of headlights off and forces the anesthesia mask around her nose and mouth.

His grip is tight, and she screams out in terror.

“Shh...” he whispers. “This is only a dream. You will wake soon, my sweet little slut of mine.”

As the wave of chemicals flow through her lungs, she feels the urge to fall back into the world she once knew as her own. It is the one place she can return to, time and time again. But it always ends with the sense of something devious, followed by the rush of panic.

It’s not real. She has to come to terms with that.

  Someday…

She almost made it outside of the village. She could have called for help. The sight was almost too much for her to see.

She succumbed to the fiery touch of his evil hand.

  What’s next? Only he knows.

  Chapter Two

“What makes you so sure we’ll find the mutt?” Lucas asks.

The trio scans the horizon outside of the train car windows, assault rifles held at the ready. A splash of orange sun seeps through the smoke-filled landscape.

War, everywhere. Annihilation. A chance to take and breed.

“Don’t call her that,” Vash says, tongue dipped beneath his cracked teeth.

They are Ouroboros breeders, high in the ranks. While that grants them immunity to search and seize, it doesn’t stop the sour glances from the passengers on the train.

They are hated, but feared by all. These days, everyone is an enemy.

Lucas relaxes against the grimy chair. “We could be with Cassian right now,” he says. “We could ride away from this unscathed.”

Vash leans against the bar of the door and bites into a red fruit, allowing the acidic juices to linger against his palette. Keeping his head down, he wonders if she even exists. His brother has been the source of so much chaos, but Vash can’t imagine Cassian has developed
a breeding program worth a damn.

Everyone knows, omegas are rare. But if the stories are true, she is the rarest of them all.

“We’ll find her,” he says, tossing the core on the floor. Squashing it underneath his tactical boots, he adds, “And then we will make our case to the new ruling class.”

Killian grunts and shakes his head.

Vash understands neither of the others believe he can win at negotiating a bigger spread of power, especially as the illegitimate child of the family. Their father, a ruthless breeder himself, was the alpha responsible for finding Vash as a youngling in one of the war-torn villages. Saving the child from harm, he was seen as a charitable man. But this world isn’t fit for saints.

They all grow up to be devils. All of them.

Vash sucks in his cheeks. “After we kill Cassian, we will all be equals. Hell, we can leave this continent and find a better opportunity,” he says.

A better world… is it possible?

The rushing winds invade the train car as the doors glide open. Stepping outside, Killian grabs Vash’s shoulder and forces him to pause before the staircase. “And the girl? Is she merely a bargaining chip?”
