Fatal Reaction, Survival

“Good,” she said to Benjamin as his racing heart began to slow down. She knew that somehow the boy was telepathically linked to the Scourge. He’d been complaining of voices in his head growing louder, in a language he didn’t understand. “Are you okay?”

Benjamin didn’t say a word. He only stared at her. There was a sudden loud rumbling, unlike thunder. The walls began to shake, and the overhead lights flickered off and on. Susan grabbed hold of the counter on her right to steady herself.

Just then the door flew open, and Liam rushed back into the room. “They’re here!”

“We’re not prepared!” Susan’s eyes were large with fright. She turned her attention back to Benjamin. A deep rumbling resonated in his chest. His eyes glowed yellow.

Benjamin’s head snapped to the side. In a deep, growling voice, he uttered the word, “Hungry!”

  Bile rose in Susan’s throat.
