He lowered his head and kissed her, slowly, peeling her minimal resistance away with strokes of his tongue against hers. The same way she’d kissed him their first night together. Because now they had time on their side.
When he broke the kiss, his head swam and he asked, “How do you feel about leaving here?”
“I have prayed many nights to never see this place again.” She whispered, “You are an answer to my prayers. Where will you be sent?”
He shook his head. They still lived by Rome’s leave. “We will have a choice. Until then, you will stay here, with me.”
“What of Davisha?” she asked still loyal despite everything.
“She may stay, too. Emmaus will find light work for her to feel useful. He needs a lighter touch in his life, as most men do. As I do. You have my pledge to protect you and keep you by my side anywhere I go. I cannot let you go, Sariah. I will not unless you make me.”
Her mischievous smile made him want to be alone with her, truly alone, without prying eyes dictating their every move. He longed to show her how he truly felt.
“And I pledge,” she said, her tone low and husky, “to follow you wherever you may go. I will never ask you to let me go. Not when I have waited my whole life for you to appear.”
As they fell into silence, then rest, tangled together, Titus could not chastise himself. He had risked abandoning his post to ensure her safety. In pulling her from a complicated situation, they’d both been set free.
He’d been waiting his whole life for her, as well.
