“I should’ve protected you better.” He refused to be soothed. In fact, he was pissed, his body almost vibrating with it.

Nakia looked over to Imani to see how she was taking Justin’s words. After all, it was Imani’s home that had been invaded and destroyed. “You protected me just fine. Thanks for coming to get us out of there.”

Scowling as though he wanted to kill someone, Justin cursed long and loud. “You have to know that if they’d realized that you were not Imani that you’d be dead, right?” he finally muttered through clenched teeth.

“Thanks for the reality check.” Nakia rolled her eyes and kissed him softly again.

He grunted and pulled her into his chest in a grip that conveyed his still volatile emotion.

  “Where to?” the driver asked.

  Chapter Fifteen

  “What the fuck, man!”

Justin understood Colt’s reaction. It had been the same for him. Hell, he was still finding it difficult to wrap his head around what he saw. “How do we handle this? It’s not as though we can kill the fucker.”

“Why the fuck not?” Colt gritted out. “He intended killing my family. In fact, he almost succeeded.”

They had arrived at the bunker almost four hours ago. The state-of-the-art bunker was an underground safe place beneath the stables that Colt had built for Imani about a year ago. The bunker was modern, high tech with large living spaces that featured three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a kitchen with small dining area, and replica of Imani’s workroom, basically a thirty-thousand-square-foot house underground. After her abduction by the vice president, Colt didn’t want to take any more chances with her safety. The bunker could only be accessed from a hidden gate on their parent’s property, a little over two miles away. At least that’s the access that the family knew of, but for emergencies, there was a hidden access in the stables that only Colt, Imani and Justin knew about.

As soon as they’d arrived, Colt had given him and Nakia one of the bedrooms while he and Imani had sequestered with Alex in the master bedroom. Justin couldn’t blame Colt’s singular focus on his family, especially after thinking Imani dead only a few hours ago, having his son abducted, and having his house almost blown to smithereens.

He and Nakia had barely crossed the threshold of their temporary bedroom before he fell on her as though starved. After traveling for over an hour in the backseat of the SUV with Nakia in his lap, both of them petting each other, unable to keep their hands to themselves despite the audience, he’d needed to feel her under him, needed to possess her again. His feelings were all over the place and he refused to put a label on it, nor was he going to question it. With the most basic need to simply sheath himself in her heat dominating his mind, he was more animal than man.

Time and space meant nothing. She was alive and in his arms, when a few hours before he couldn’t be assured of that. He held her up against the nearest wall and kissed her with all the pent-up angst he’d felt on believing her lost to him. Soon the kiss wasn’t enough, and he’d needed to feel even closure to her. He pulled her clothes from her, and if a few articles were torn in the process, that didn’t deter him or lessen his urgency. He’d barely gotten her last piece of clothing off before he was buried deep in her moist heat. He’d been so out of mind with lust he hadn’t given thought to whether she wanted him or not, was ready and primed for him or not, but when she held his face in her palms, kissed him as though he were her lifeline, and sensually rolled her hips on and off his cock, he lost what little semblance of control he had left.

Hours later, he was still pulsing from her sensual loving. It had taken everything for him to leave her arms even after spending himself in her. Mac had called to tell them that when the FBI had gone back to the warehouse to arrest the occupants, the place had been empty and cleaned as though no one had been there hours before. It was only then that Justin told Colt about Matt being at the warehouse.

“I don’t know, man.” Although he’d seen it, Justin was still having difficulty wrapping his mind around his brother’s behavior. He was reeling with no purchase, this was his brother! No words. “There must be some misunderstanding or something. Matt’s our brother. What happened to the ‘we stand together, always’ code?”

“You’re preaching to the wrong damn brother. Try telling that shit to Matthew. He clearly missed that lecture in the fucking womb,” Colt growled. “This explains how they knew you were back and knew that we were going after Baldacci. His intent was diabolical. He wanted to cause the most harm and inflict the most pain. Well, he’s fucked because he should’ve made sure that we were dead first.”

“I don’t get what he gets out of doing this.” Justin had thought about this since he saw Matt in the warehouse. The sight of him had been a gut-punch that had rocked him. Granted he and Matt had never been close. Hell, Matt hadn’t been close to Colt either. But they were brothers, right? Ragnarsons. Shouldn’t that shit stand for something? He looked at Colt now, his angry, larger-than-life older brother, and he couldn’t imagine Colt ever betraying him like this, or he, Colt. That shit was just fuckin’ wrong on so many levels.

“I don’t give a damn why he did this or what the fuck he gets from it,” Colt said bitterly. “Those mercenaries slaughtered my men. Their blood is on Matt’s hands! There’s no fuckin’ words that explains that shit away. No fuckin’ action now that wouldn’t result with my bullet in his fuckin’ head!”

“You’re not wrong,” Justin started hesitantly. “But you also didn’t see him. I’ve never seen him like that. He was angry, bitter even. What did we miss? When did he get this way?”

“You’re still tryin’ to understand something I don’t give a shit about,” Colt fumed. “I mean he has to be sick in the head to betray his family. Betray his country. He jumped in bed with the fuckin’ Russians. There’s nothing to say after that.”

When he thought about the danger Nakia had been in and how close he’d come to losing her, he more than understood Colt’s anger. “Oh, I agree we need to bring his ass down. I just want to make sure we get the entire nest. Matt has never done shit on his own. Fuck, even his marriage wasn’t his idea. Anna proposed to him, and she’s been managing his ass since.”

  Colt frowned in thought.

“I mean I know he’s guilty, but that fucker has never had an original thought. When we were kids, everything he did, every decision he made, was because one of us did it first. Someone else has to be pulling his strings in this. I mean we know Melissa was there, but I don’t see him jumping to her command.”

  Colt nodded, still seeming uncertain.

Justin chuckled with no humor. “We could always beat the crap out of him and get the truth. But then Mom and Dad would give us shit for it.”

“And they won’t give us shit for killing their psycho son?”

“Yeah, there’s that too.” Justin smiled, but he found no humor in it. How did things get so fucked up that they were contemplating killing their brother?

“I don’t care who’s pulling his strings. I’m still going to kill him. What those men did is on him. I’ll make sure the fucker has a nice funeral. Mom and Dad will have to get over it because he deserves to die.”

Despite Colt’s conviction, Justin was fairly certain their parents wouldn’t support terminating their son, psycho or not.

Justin made it back to their bedroom in the early hours of the morning. Nakia was still sound asleep but groggily came awake long enough to pull him into her arms when he climbed into bed beside her.

“You had her! You had the brat! How could you let them go?!?!” Sarah was incensed. She’d done all the heavy lifting and left only a small part of the plan to her uncle Matt, and he’d fucked it up.

“I didn’t let them go. There were men stationed everywhere, watching all the exits. How was I to know that she had a weapon that got her out of there undetected? You didn’t tell me that she could kill so many of my men.”

They…were…not…your…men!” Sarah screamed each word. She paced in agitation, not caring that Anna, Matt’s wife, glared at her. Anna was used to being in control of Matt. Well, that was too damn bad. After Melissa came to them complaining, Matt and Anna had wanted in on Colt and Justin’s wealth especially with the ranch in such debilitating debt. They’d been surprised when they found out about Imani’s abilities. Never quite accepting her marriage to Colt, they had been only too happy to kill two birds with one stone. It wasn’t a hard sell to get them on board with getting rid of the kid too. “They’re my men! I hired them.”

“I’m not interested in your fucking family squabbles,” Sergey told them coldly. “We’re running out of time. No one is killing that engineer until we get the formula and weapons we came for. So, stop this bullshit and tell us where they are.”

“You’re fired!” Sarah shouted. “We don’t need you anymore. You will never get another chance to get those women. Not with Colt and Justin on their guard.”

“We told you that we will get rid of them,” Sergey growled.

“No. You don’t touch them. You were only hired to get rid of those women and the brat, not Colt and Justin.” Sarah moved closer to the mercenary she’d thought she was a genius idea to hire. Now she wasn’t so sure. He was beginning to scare her.

“I’m not going to kill a brilliant mind when we can use that kind of resource. Do you have any idea what she can bring to Mother Russia? We would have the most powerful army in the world.”

“I don’t care what you do with her.” Sarah had to think fast. Sergey was already aware of their security, and he could easily kill all of them and still get to Colt and Justin without their help. If she was smart, she might get what she wanted after all. “I want her out of Colt’s life,” she told the stone-cold killer in front of her. “This time make sure you do it right. And just to ensure you follow through, your men will stay here unarmed,” Sarah told him. She mentally crossed her fingers that she was playing this right.

“We could kill all of you right here, right now,” Sergey growled.

Sarah smiled grimly. Shit! Shit! Shit! “Yes, you could,” she said calmly. “But you’ll never find them without us. You won’t know how to get in and out of their hiding place without encountering the army of men Colt has already employed to guard his family. So, stop wasting my time issuing useless threats and let’s work together. I promise you.” This time she smiled confidently. “If we work together, we’ll both get what we want.”

Justin woke at the feel of desire flowing like hot lava throughout his body. It felt as though every nerve ending was throbbing, aching. His cock was granite hard and encased in a warm, silky heaven that was the epicenter of his torment.

He looked down his body and immediately stated spilling his seed at the sight of a naked Nakia on her knees, her ass cocked up provocatively, the generous globes of her breasts topped with beaded berry tips pressed against his thighs, and her mouth stuffed wide with his thick cock.

“Fuck!” he growled as she deep throated his bulbous tip. Too quickly he felt an intense tingle up his spine, and his balls tightened to the point of pain as a searing orgasm rocked through him.

He was still shooting off when she climbed onto his lap and sheathed his cock with her drenched pussy.

“Fuck!” he roared, as again his eyes rolled back in his head and bright stars burst behind his eyelids in another mind-numbing climax.

Much later, when he’d finally dragged his ass out of bed and into a shower, he wasn’t at all surprised that Nakia was in their bedroom with a tray loaded with food and a bottle of wine. Although he wasn’t looking to ever get married again, Nakia would be it for him. In his heart, in his soul, she was his and he was hers. She loved him without reservation or condition. And he loved her. In everything she did, she tried to take care of him or considered his needs. She was unselfish in her giving and hadn’t once complained about the mess he’d dragged her into.

Twice now she’d been in imminent danger, having been caught in the crosshairs of his fucked-up life. And still she had not withheld herself from him. Fuck, they hadn’t even been on a proper date. He had no idea what to call their relationship. They weren’t exactly in the boyfriend and girlfriend realm, but then they weren’t just fuck buddies either, although they’d been doing nothing but fucking every chance since he came back. He knew what he had to do though. Despite his growing need for her or how she made him feel, he had to man-up and protect her. After the hell her ex-husband put her through, she deserved a drama-free life.

“I didn’t intend to sleep the day away,” he murmured. “We still have to continue our plan for those bastards who attacked yesterday.”

“No worries. Imani and I have been busy while you and Colt caught up on your beauty sleep,” she teased.

Justin didn’t return her carefree smile. He knew he had to make the difficult decision and maybe hurt her in the process. He finally pushed his half-eaten tray from him, his appetite deserting him as he prepared himself to do what needed to be done. “Thank you for doing this for me. Thanks for taking care of my nephew and making sure he was returned to my brother no worse for wear,” he told her quietly. “Colt will be eternally grateful for what you did.”

“Imani already expressed her thanks. I appreciate that. I’m just glad it worked out, because there were moments there that I wasn’t certain of anything.”

“Yeah, that’s what I need to talk to you about.” Justin was surprised at how difficult it was for him to say what had to be said. He was struggling with the thought of being without her.

She sat in the middle of the bed, her legs folded beneath her as she looked up at him expectantly. Her gaze felt like a caress against his skin. She wasn’t trying to hide the fact that she adored him. He felt like shit for what he had to do.

He took a deep breath before saying softly, “I need you to leave here. Leave the country.” He paused when she just stared up at him blankly as though she hadn’t heard what he said. “It’s too dangerous for you to be here,” he rushed on.

“You can’t be serious, Jay.” Despite her words, she looked back at him calmly and didn’t seem to be taking what he said as a directive that affected her. “I told you, Imani and I have been busy today. She’s made sure that I’m protected.”

“What? Imani made a suit for you?”

Nakia smirked. “Now you’re not the only one who can be invisible.”

“How did she make one so quickly?”

“Imani made the suit for Sarah, and you know what happened there. She only needed my DNA to make it work for me.”

“I still need you out of here. These bastards won’t stop coming. They want Imani’s weapons, and they’re not going to get them, so this will continue.”

“I’ll stay and help.” Again, that calm confidence about what she was going to do despite his differing opinion.

“We have men for that.” He was puzzled by her dismissive attitude.

“Yeah, well, you have those men, and you have me. Besides, I want to be with you, unless you don’t want that anymore. Is that what this is about? You got what you wanted and now want me gone?”

He thought for a split second to go with that, but he couldn’t hurt her like that. It would be easier for him to get her to do what he wanted, but that was too cruel. “That’s not it at all. This has nothing to do with our relationship or lack of one.” He took a deep breath before continuing. “I’ve made no promises to you, Nakia. At least none that I’m aware of.”

  “Jay?”

“No, I don’t want to hurt you, but you have to be aware that I’ll never get married again. So, don’t make this about a relationship that will never be. Your being here isn’t an option.” He hardened his resolve as she uncoiled herself from the bed and stood in front of him. “We’ll make sure you’re taken care of once you return to the Bahamas,” he murmured in a rush when she simply stared at him.

  Nakia smi
led as though saddened. “I won’t be going back to the Bahamas any time soon. I’m staying to help Imani and Colt, and, yes, you, even though you don’t seem to want my help. However, afterward, if you’re still adamant about ending whatever this is between us, I’ll continue my job in the Miami office.” She narrowed her eyes and stared at him coolly. “Unless of course, you’re trying to tell me that I’m fired?”

“I never said any such thing,” he sputtered. “I’m simply trying to protect you.”

“Really?” She gave him another sad smile as though she could see straight through him. “You protect me by reminding me that you’ve promised me nothing? Did you feel I needed reminding, or did you need a justification for your fear? You felt something last night and this morning that you weren’t expecting. I felt it too, Jay. And no matter how stubborn you are about this, how you try to push me away, I’ll still love you. Yes, you haven’t promised me anything, but your promise is in every kiss we share, every touch, and every time you look at me. I know, and you know, what’s between us is something neither of us can control or change. I can no more stop loving you, or you stop loving me, whether we’re married or not.”

“This is not some fairy tale, Nakia. I’m not going to change my mind.”

She reached for him and kissed him on his lips. “No matter, Jay. We had a marriage of the heart the first time you made love to me, the first time you placed your seed in me. No man has ever had that privilege. I don’t need a piece of paper to tell me what’s between us.”

“Is that what you’re hoping? Are you hoping that I’ve made you pregnant and will be forced to marry you?” He gave her a bitter laugh. What the fuck does she mean, no man had…? Not even her husband? He wished elation wasn’t pumping through every cell in his body.

She sighed as though her frustration was exacerbated by his ignorance. “I’ll be with Imani if you need me.”

“I’m ordering the jet ready for your use. We need to ensure your safety before shit goes down.”
