His Forever Mate

Two humans appeared beside the one holding the rifle, and I heard the footsteps of three more nearby. They were whispering between themselves and scouting out the vehicles, likely looking for wolves to skin. Anger flared through me, but I focused on letting it pass as I watched five humans climb into the back of a truck while the one with the rifle stayed put as a look-out.

Nic nudged my flank with his snout, eager to move in on them now they were all contained in one place. But I had a better idea.

  We only need one.

I motioned with my snout for Nic to fall back behind me, and we waited.

The humans scoured every truck in the convoy and came out with the food and water I’d loaded into them. I wondered if they’d cottoned on that it was a trap, but with the way they were stomping loudly and talking at full volume, I doubted it. I watched as they created a single line and walked back toward their camp.

I flicked my tail to give the signal to move forward and heard the fifty wolves behind me fall into position with their heads low, ready to move. I snuck ahead while Nic stayed back a good thirty paces, and we set the speed for the rest of the wolves.

I caught the scent of the last two humans to leave the trucks, and I followed close behind them. One of them was fairly tall for a human, the other I estimated to be several inches shorter than me, and both of them were lighter. I knew I could have taken them down easily if our mission was to attack.

Maybe that’s what the mission should be…

I felt a bloodlust rush through me as the vision of the wolf pelts flashed through my mind. My mouth watered when I thought of how good it would feel to get revenge on them for the fear the humans had put us through; that they’d almost killed my mate and would try it again. With the number and quality of wolves I had with me, we would be able to kill all six humans in less than a minute. And if they led us to their base, maybe we could take out more…

I internally growled and took command of my emotions. I was in line to become Supreme Alpha because I was able to keep myself under control. I also advocated peace, not war. So I breathed through the bloodlust as I moved into the tree line to my right, and then I raced forward to track the human to my left.

The two humans at the back of their group carried rifles loosely at their hips, and they plodded along loudly, seemingly oblivious to our presence. I glanced through the trees and spotted Nic’s orange eyes glowing on the other side of the humans, stalking them from the left. Maybe I could take one on my own or maybe I’d need Nic’s help. Maybe it would all go to hell and we’d need the entire pack to get us out of here alive. There was only one way to find out.

I let out a soft whine, and the two humans at the back of the group stopped in their tracks. They dropped the supplies they were carrying and grabbed their guns, spinning around and searching for the source of the sound.

Nic let out another whine, and they spun around the other way.

I crept forward from my side, and as the human closest to me turned back around, our eyes met. He raised his gun faster than I’d expected, and the sound of gunpowder thundered through the forest.

  Without hesitating, I pounced.
