Midlife in Glimmerspell

“You’re angry with me,” he says it like a fact—one that happens to be true.

“No.” I shake my head and blow out a breath. “I have no reason to be angry with you. Not a good one anyway. I’m being very immature. Please forgive me. You’ve been nothing but kind to me—mostly.” And shockingly, I mean everything I say.

“Okay, tell me why you have no good reason to be angry with me.”

My mouth opens and closes. The old me would never in a million years tell a man that I was fuming at the rejection he doled out in lieu of a kiss. But I think I’m past worrying about what people think of me. Besides, the best way for Elliot and me to move beyond the weirdness of it all, and maybe even hammer out a genuine friendship, is to start with the truth.

“I guess I was having a tantrum because you didn’t give me a kiss last night at the door. It’s stupid, and immature, and I hope you can forgive me for even entertaining a bad mood over the fact. I’m sleep-deprived and my head has been all over the place ever since I set foot in this town—and well, a little before that.”

His chest expands a moment, the muscles in his jaw redefine themselves, and darn it all to heck, if he doesn’t look ten times more comely.

  So not fair.

“That’s funny,” he says. “I’m angry with myself over the exact same thing.”

“You are?” A spear of hope rockets through me, and I hate how desperate I’ve become for him to think of me in a romantic way. It’s the exact sort of thing I swore off once I arrived in this haunted town. And here I am wishing on a silly star like a thirteen-year-old girl.

  He nods. “Come here.”

Elliot navigates us through the endless crowd of coeds, every one of them giving him a lingering look, licking their lips as they lust after him openly. He leads us right to the alcove in the entry and pauses to examine me as we stand facing one another.

He’s going to do it, isn’t he? He’s going to make up for lost time and plant one on me, right here in the bookstore.

His brows pinch in the middle. “The truth is, I wanted that kiss last night more than you’ll ever know.” His Adam’s apple rides up and down as his eyes bore into mine. “But I didn’t think it was fair until I told you everything.” He gives me a gentle spin until I’m facing the wall. My reflection stares back at me in the mirror before us as the words above it read Vampire checker! Take a peek. Do you see your reflection? Or are you a vampire?

“What is it?” I ask, laughing. “Am I waiting for you to whisper it into my ear?” I look a notch above my reflection, and he’s not there. “Elliot?” I glance back and my heart lurches because he’s still very much standing right behind me. I turn back to the mirror and suddenly realize what Elliot is trying to tell me—why he had so much intimate knowledge regarding just about every dark secret this town is holding.

I spin back around and look him in the eyes.

A breath expires from me, and I feel lightheaded.

  Elliot Greenly is a vampire.

I nod up at him, any hint of a smile gone from me.

Sunny was right. The second half of my life is certainly going to be far more interesting than the first.

A baker who sees the dead. One too many suitors.

And a killer. Living in Honey Hollow can be murder. (Click below to get reading!)

  Cutie Pies and Deadly Lies

My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so rarely do I see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety, who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom.

So when I saw that sweet orange tabby twirling around my landlord’s ankles, I figured Merilee was in for trouble. Personally, I was hoping for a skinned knee—what I got was a top spot in an open homicide investigation. Throw in a hot judge and an ornery detective that oozes testosterone and that pretty much sums up my life right about now. Have I mentioned how cute that detective is?

Lottie Lemon has a bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors and she has the supernatural ability to see dead pets—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders and her insatiable thirst for justice and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.

Living in the small town of Honey Hollow can be murder.
