“What are you doing here, Al?” Elise asked, seething.

“Should I go?” Dina asked, standing to her feet, eager to escape.

Elise was aware that Dina was uncomfortable being in the middle of whatever was about to take place. However, since Elise still hadn’t decided whether or not Dina was fired, she needed the woman to stay.

“No, Dina, have a seat,” Elise instructed her.

“Yeah, Dina… have a seat,” Alyssa mimicked, sarcastically. She folded her arms defiantly across her chest, then leaned against the wall. The smirk on her face made Elise want to invert her entire mouth.

“What are you doing here?” Elise asked her sister again, making no attempt to hide her disdain.

“I’m here to find out when that paperwork is going to make it to my email. Or when there’s going to be a meeting to get me my money. It needs to happen soon and while I’m feeling nice. Because if it doesn’t, then I’ll have to change my mind and opt for selling instead.”

“You’ve lost every bit of your rabid-ass mind if you think I’m selling this company. Every fuckin’ bit of it. And furthermore, don’t come up in my house with threats and demands. You know I’m not the one.”

“And neither am I. You want me out the way, then get me out the way by doing what you need to do. Or the situation will go in a whole other direction and there won’t be a company left.”

“How could you?” Dina asked, finding her place in the conversation. She sprang from her seat and stormed toward Alyssa, standing eye-to-eye. “How could you be this venomous? How could you threaten to destroy a legacy that Sable worked so hard to build? Do you know how disrespectful that is? It’s like spitting on her grave.” Dina shook her head in disgust, then turned to look at Elise. “Elise, I think it’s best that I part, to give you the privacy you need. I’m okay with whatever decision you make about my employ with the firm. If you choose to release me, then I deserve it. But know that I never intended this to happen.”

“Whew, Dina… that wasn’t dramatic at all.”

Elise nodded her head in Dina’s direction in acknowledgement of her departing words. A verbal response wasn’t possible; all of the energy she needed to exert, was going toward Alyssa as soon as the room was clear, with nobody but the two of them…

The warm water hitting my body felt so good. When I first got into the shower, I just stood there for a while letting the soothing stream be my saving grace. The pressure was perfect, the temperature was perfectly hot the way I liked it, and I welcomed the time to clear my mind and wash away any traces of a hangover.

Clearly, I needed to relax; and clearly, I didn’t realize it until I woke up at Trevor’s wearing a shirt that was sizes too big, and man draws. I was drinking like I didn’t know that I was a lightweight. I liked to make the fruity stuff at the end of a busy work day. My blender had built-in job security because it was always creating labors of sweet love. But those cute homemade drinks didn’t pack even half the punch, of the ones from last night.

But I had nobody to blame but myself.

As I lathered in my favorite peach-scented wash, my soul began to soothe, and my body began to relax. Thoughts of what I was going to slip into once I was out of the shower, crept in. Having decided on a tank top and leggings, my mind went to planning out tomorrow’s visits. I had a lot of quality time to get in, but we hadn’t worked out the details of whether I’d see the matriarchs in the same place together, or if the visits would be separate.

They were my only obligations. The faces I cared about seeing and kissing. Friends were scarce. Most of the ones I had before I left, were away at school themselves. That, or they now resided in the towns they left for—like me. There was the person who lent his sperm some twenty-two years ago, but seeing him was always very low on the totem pole. In fact, I rarely reached out to him when I came home. I had no respect for that person at all. The only reason I gave him an ounce of attention was because the person he hurt the most—my mother—insisted on it. So, he may get a call, and he may not. It would really depend on my mood from day to day, as my visit wound down.

Besides, in about three months, he’d have his replacement child.

Okay, no thinking about that, I told myself, as I finalized my washdown.

Out of the blue… Trevor popped in my head. I found myself thinking about how he had always looked out for me. Last night was no different. When I was too young for anything romantic, I had the biggest crush on him. He was my first white boy crush, in fact. He wasn’t geeky. He wasn’t shy. And he was… is fine. Never told his conceited ass that, though. Not in a million years. He gets enough compliments in a day, just by walking outside.

When I turned eighteen, I was tempted to have him take my virginity. But I chickened out. When I was twenty-one, I thought about it again. But I changed my mind. I was rounding that corner to finishing school and being recruited for the opportunity of a lifetime, and didn’t need any distractions. I had held off on sex far beyond all the girls I knew; so, I figured why not wait a little longer? I had bigger fish to fry.

But then came Daniel, who was now, the ex-boyfriend...

“Are we eating today, or are we fasting?” I heard from outside the shower. I had already finished and was just about to cut the water flow when I heard his big mouth. I almost jumped from my damn skin! My knees felt on the verge of buckling, and then came his crazy-ass, loud-ass laughter. I wiped the glass to clear up some of the steam, and there he was. “Just asking because I’m kinda like hungry today.”

“What in the fucking hell, Trevor!” I yelled. “If you don’t get the hell out of here!”

“Are we eating today or not?” he asked, ignoring my outburst. “I got possession of your towel until you answer.”

I looked up at the top of the glass, and sure enough, my towel was gone. “I’m going to beat the hell out of you. Swear to God.”

“You’ll be doing it naked if you don’t answer my question. And that, I might just enjoy.”

  “Trevor, I’m counting to three…”

“Go ahead and start the countdown. I’ve been out in the kitchen waiting to pitch in wherever you needed me, and you’re up here vacation-showering. Who does that?”

“Trevor, give me my damn towel, and go sit down somewhere and be patient.”

“I’m the king of patience. Especially, when it comes to you.”

“Trevor! I wanna turn off the water without fucking freezing! Put my towel back! Oh, my Goddd! You play way too much!” Seconds later, a part of my lime green savior found its place back over the top of the glass. “Asshole! Might make you starve now!” I shouted out, as I snatched off my shower cap, and hung it over the rack to dry. “Trevor!” I yelled, when I didn’t hear any movement from him.

I needed to make sure the coast was clear. When I called Trevor’s name a second time, and he didn’t answer, I started the process of drying off. I applied face cream, deodorant, and then proceeded to do a condensed version of my full-body lotion ritual. When I was done, I rushed past my ensuite to get to my underwear. However, I stopped dead in my tracks when I ran dead-ass into a smiling face.

“You called?” he asked, leaning against the threshold of my bedroom door.

  36 | TREVOR

I had never seen her eyes so big, or heard her let out a gasp so loud. The look of surprise on her face was priceless. Naked and vulnerable, and I couldn’t stop cracking up.

“Oh my God, Trevor! Ugh!” she screamed, making a frantic beeline for something to cover up in.

“You called me. I’m just answering the call.”

“I called to see where you were!” She shook her head swiftly side to side, as she struggled to pull a large shirt over her, that stopped somewhere near her upper thigh. “To see if you were still in the bathroom with me! That’s why I called you.”

The way she screamed when I saw her in that sexy-ass birthday suit, you’d think I hadn’t just undressed her as recently as this morning
, when I had to take off her thong and slip my boxers over that tender, tempting place down below. This view was different though. She wasn’t lying limp and reeking of Amaretto Sour, and all the way out of her mind. She smelled of sweet peaches, was wide awake, and her body was fully alert—which in turn caused something to become fully alert in me…

My eyes had taken a trip from her breasts, down to that woman region… and downward to her painted toes.

“How was I supposed to know that’s why you were calling? I thought you wanted me to come back. I was already halfway to the kitchen and waiting to…” I looked down at her exposed thighs. “…eat.”

“Trevor, you’re something else. Like I don’t know what that little subliminal was.”

She retreated back a few steps and leaned against the wall near the ensuite, holding onto the hem at the bottom of her shirt. She tugged at it, trying to make it longer than it actually was. When that failed, she folded her arms across her chest.

“What subliminal?” I asked. I knew damn well, what she was talking about.

  “Stop it.”

“What?” I was trying my best not to laugh, and keep a straight face. “I’m just tryin’ to get clear.”

“You know what I’m talking about.” She giggled. “I’m not going there with you.”

“But you want to go there with me.”

“Uhh… no, I don’t. You are conceited as fuck. Don’t you think it would’ve happened already if that’s what I wanted?”

“I know that it would’ve gone there already if you weren’t scared. That would be the more accurate statement.”

She stuck her neck out and laughed, her hands falling to her sides. “Uhhh, she… as in me…” She pointed at her chest. “…is not scared of shit.”

  “Riiight. Big bad-ass wolf, huh?”

She smacked her lips. “Yes. Big bad-ass wolf.”

  “Not scared of shit.”

  “Of shit,” she repeated.

  “You sure?” I asked her.

  “Positive.”

  “Come here, then.”

“Nah. I’m good right here. And I need to finish getting dressed. So… we can eat… I mean, I can cook.”

“So, you can cook, and I can eat.”

“So, we can cook, and we can eat.”

“Okay. That’s cool. But come here first.”

“No.” She shook her head. “I need to finish getting dressed so I can come… so I can go down there. Downstairs.”

“Okay, so since you won’t come over here. Can I come over there?”

“Nooo! For what?!” She chuckled nervously. She was flustered. I could tell by the fact that she had crossed and uncrossed her arms several times during the exchange. “Why are you playing, right now? I thought you were so hungry. I’m try—”

“I am hungry. That’s why I’m tryin’ to get to you.”

“See, I never saw you in action. Now, I see how you get in those chicks’ panties. You’re persistent as hell.”

I didn’t respond. Only offered her a smile. Without the back and forth, she had nothing to stand on. If I said nothing, then she had no rebuttal for anything. No chance to deflect. I planned to see how long it would play out.

“What is wrong with you?” she asked. I shrugged my shoulders and still said nothing. “Trevor… I’m not doin’ this with you right now.” She prepared to head in the direction of the nightstand next to the bed. But then she looked over at me again, knowing that the smallest movement would expose more of her. She still only wore her Mickey Mouse shirt, with nothing beneath it. No bra. No panties. “Oh my God. You’re really doing this.”

If she had told me to leave, I wouldn’t have had a choice but to do that. But I knew that Skai didn’t want me to leave. Whether this went anywhere or not, I wanted to see how far it could go. Label me an asshole; I had to see.

Skai grew silent for a few minutes. I could tell she was debating with herself. Maybe even strategizing on how she would get dressed and past me. But then, in a surprise turn of events, she began the short walk to where I stood.

“Okay, I’m here…” she said, standing half a step outside my personal space.

“It took you long enough,” I said, looking down into her curious brown eyes. The small, almost-unnoticeable freckles that took up residence in an area across her nose, gave her an appearance of innocence. But innocent was not what Skai was.

“Well, because I didn’t think you were serious,” she challenged. “I was trying to get downstairs so—”

“This…” I said, cutting into her sentence, then sneakily sliding a digit past her mound, “…this is the downstairs that I want to get to… right here,” I whispered into her ear.

With my mouth pressed against her earlobe, I waited for her to protest, to squirm, or to plain pull away and maybe even slap the fuck out of me. I waited and waited. But that never happened. And after moments of moving my finger in and out of her slippery softness, she gave me the green light. A green light in the form of a moan, a light thrust of her hips, and the roll of her eyes as her head leaned back.

And the rest was soon to be history…

  37 | ALYSSA

Alyssa slowly got undressed at the request of her OB/GYN’s assistant. Had it not been for the music coming through the speakers in the ceiling, Alyssa might have suffered a panic attack by now. Her nerves were shot to shit. There was so much going on. The issues with her sister had escalated to a point where things were likely to get extremely uncomfortable in the coming weeks. Enough time had passed, and Alyssa had been waiting for numbers that would equate to an attractive offer. An offer that would allow her to live comfortably, and in the lifestyle, she had grown accustomed to. It would need to be enough to where she could buy her home outright, and get her a business going.

Event planning wasn’t Alyssa’s thing. That was her bitch of a sister’s dream. Elise always had her nose so far up their aunt’s ass, that it wasn’t even funny. It’s why she was the favorite. It’s why Queen Sable left Elise in charge as the CEO, and Alyssa merely a glorified employee. Yeah, sure, they said that her title was VP and next in line behind her sister, but that wasn’t the case. Alyssa called no shots; she had no real power. The salary was decent. She couldn’t debate that. But how the fuck did it make sense that all the employees knew to go directly to Elise for important matters, and never even so much as mention to Alyssa, what the hell the issue was?

When Alyssa mentioned to Elise how she felt, Elise had pacified her by giving her one of their large accounts—MGM Resorts. Even when Elise did that ‘good deed’, she never stopped saying, “We can’t mess this up, Al.” Like she expected that it would get messed up. And then what happened? It got messed up. Alyssa strongly felt that it was Elise’s fault, for jinxing the situation. For constantly putting those fucking words out to the universe. How was shit supposed to go right when she kept putting the prediction out there?

But oh well. Alyssa was at the point where she just wanted her payout. Nothing more. Not even the familial ties. She was okay without them. Nobody had sided with her anyway. So, all she desired was her money and she would be done.

  Especially now…

She smiled up at the ceiling while lying on her back, covered by the crispy paper robe, that all patients were given. Closing her eyes, she let the music soothe her. Any minute now, she would receive the news that she had been waiting for.

  “Good afternoon, Alyssa.”

“Dr. Watson,” she sang, excitedly. “How are you?”

“I’m well,” the young, petite doctor said, before taking her seat on the stool to the side of the exam bed. “What brings you in today?”

Alyssa’s face opened up into a huge smile, that her excitement wouldn’t let her control. “I think I might be pregnant.”

Dr. Watson looked down at the file in her hand. “So, your last period was three weeks ago.”

Alyssa sat upright on the bed, her legs dangling over the side. “Yep. But I had unprotected . . .
I mean, not unprotected. The condom came off. But it was two days after my cycle ended.”

“So, then you haven’t actually missed a period yet?” the doctor asked.

“Not yet. But I’ve been feeling weird. I’m peeing a lot. I’ve been feeling queasy. Taking way more naps than usual. I’m almost positive that I’m pregnant, Dr. Watson.”

“Are you exhibiting any symptoms of concern?”

  “No. Why?”

“Well, Alyssa.” The doctor paused, as to deliver the words with care. “Because you just had an exam two months ago. Unless you have something going on—”

“The only thing I have going on is that I’m pretty sure I’m pregnant. Are you going to examine me or not?”

“Let’s do this. I’ll put in for a blood test with the lab. If you are pregnant, it’s way too early for me to tell with a pelvic. But a blood test would be much more effective.”

“Sounds good to me,” Alyssa said. “But you’ll see. If there’s any one person that knows their body, it’s me.”

The doctor smiled. “Okay, so a blood test it is. I’ll get the request over to the lab and then you’ll be all set. You can go ahead and get dressed,” she said on her way out the door.

Alyssa chuckled, when she was alone. “You hear that, baby?” Rubbing her invisible baby bump, she declared, “It’s gonna be you and mommy from now on.”

  38 | SKAI

What was happening between me and Trevor wasn’t supposed to be happening. Not in a million years was it supposed to be happening. We were friends. Good friends. Something like… best friends. It had been that way for years. That friendship status was why I never crossed any lines of temptation. And there had been many lines of temptation. Like times I had the opportunity to sit on his lap because we were playing around and it got too cuddly. Or times where we almost kissed, but I pulled back and changed the entire scene like nothing had ever taken place. I’d seen him with no shirt, and maybe his pants partially unzipped. He’d seen me in booty shorts and maybe a tank that revealed a little too much. But we had never been here in the moment that was quickly being created. Even with the pace at which things were moving,
