During the ride back to the palace, his thoughts were full of Lady Persephone. Will she smile upon me? Have I gained the love of such a creature? He did not know, and this vexed him exceedingly.

On the night of the full moon, he sent a man out to fetch her. He was too ashamed to go along. What if her people were to see me? Especially the little ones… Would they despise me? How can they love her, and yet, hate her husband?

And so, he sat in the parlor and waited. Dinner was served, but he would not eat. Nothing could stir him from his chair. Juice was brought to him and he reluctantly drank it. And then, he went back to waiting.

The candles burned low. He watched the flickering flame, waving his hand the way she did when she put the lights out. But the light mocked him and the fire burned on.

Where are they? Why does he not urge his steed to make haste? Could something have happened to detain them? Hayden began to fret, imagining all the things that could happen on the way here.

Maybe they are at the city gates. Oh why did I not have a messenger sent when they reached the city? He stared up at the full moon, marveling at how it brightened the night. Come to me, my love. Tarry not. I cannot bear for us to be apart any longer.

He jerked his head around as a servant entered the room.

Sheepishly, the maid bowed and took the platter with the empty juice cup on it.

The prince scowled until she had left. He grew despondent. What if she does not return? Surely, she would not break the covenant. His countenance darkened. Maybe the elf decided to stay with her little ones. Lady Persephone, how could you betray me? I sent you to them, to make you happy. You said you would return. On the full moon, you said you would return to me. But where are you?

He smote his breast, cursing himself for letting her go. And then, he felt a presence in the room with him. He turned, seeing those bright green eyes, gazing down upon him. And they drove him to his knees. “Milady,” he bowed low, not even looking up at her. Hayden trembled, fearing what she would say; that lovely voice and the condemnation that was sure to follow.

She glided over, and stood before him. There was the barest hint of a smile on her face, as she bent down and whispered into his ear. “My husband, I have returned.”

  ***

He remained bowed. “Milady, how was your visit?”

The elf knelt down across from him and, placing a finger underneath his chin, lifted his head up to face her. “You desired my happiness.” She smiled. “I am happy.”

He nodded, struggling to contain all the emotions of the evening. “I am pleased, Milady.” The young man trembled before her.

She leaned forward, and held him close. “Peace, my husband.”

“Milady, I was afraid you would not return.”

Lady Persephone whispered, “I am here. The covenant remains unbroken.”

With a heavy sigh, he pulled away. “You have returned merely for the sake of our agreement.”

She stared at him. “For that very cause, I came here with you.”

The youth bowed his head. “I took you from your… people. Indeed you were my prize. But I regret what I have done. I no longer desire you to serve me… I want only your love.”

She frowned. “Human, you are found wanting. A creature that takes what they would have. You abduct one of the Queen’s Elves, and then profess your love for her?”

Hayden implored, “Please forgive me. What I did was out of foolishness. I regret my actions.”

“The covenant has been made, husband. It must be fulfilled. I left those I love. And you now have your desire.”

He was incredulous. “I sent you away to visit them.”

The elf nodded. “I am grateful, and have returned to fulfill the covenant.”

Summoning up all of his courage, the young man meekly asked, “Could you ever love me?”

Lady Persephone thought for a moment.

Prince Hayden bore an expectant look.

  She spoke, “Perhaps.”

His eyes lit up at that. “Oh, Milady, thank you! I will win your love, of that you can be sure!”

The elf studied him carefully. “To earn the love of a greater nymph, you must be above reproach. You must give instead of taking, think of others before yourself. Walk with dignity, eschewing all temptations. Be wise in all your dealings, neither slothful nor corrupt. A heart bearing shame is an unworthy vessel and shall be cast aside. My love cannot reside in it.”

His eyes grew wide and he fell back into a seated position, realizing that to gain her love, he must be reborn. The young man felt filthy in her eyes. It had seemed so simple: he loved her, she should love him back. But now, he knew the cost to win her affections. He wondered aloud, “Can I do this?”

She looked at him, but said nothing.

  ***

Later that night, he lay in bed next to the elf, watching as she slept. Earlier, she had attempted to stimulate him, but he begged off and she relented. His mind was troubled. Can I win her love? He became resolute. I must try. I can no longer abide her disdain. Nor do I wish to take anything from her. I will earn her love, become a man who is worthy of it. Only then, can my soul be at peace.

He had decided that she would no longer pleasure him physically, until he had gained her affections. I will be her husband inside, and then she will fulfill my desires on the outside. The changes would be difficult, but he would make them. I cannot undo what was done, but I can make amends. And I will purge myself of shamefulness. I will give back what was taken. Arrogance will give way to prudence.

Prince Hayden thought about his people. I will be the king that they desire. I will love them and rule with wisdom, like my father. I will earn their love. He glanced over at the sleeping Lady Persephone. And I will earn your love, Milady, whatever it takes. I will face the challenges and overcome them. I will cleanse my soul and right the wrongs. I will be the man that you can love.

  ***

Tristan’s eyes went wide and he bowed, “Your Highness.”

Prince Hayden nodded, “It is good to see you, my friend.”

The noble youth smiled. “To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?” He grabbed a bell and was about to ring for a servant to bring them tea.

His friend grew somber, holding up a hand. “I wish to speak with you, Tristan. Alone.”

The blonde-haired youth nodded, understanding. “Come with me, Your Highness.”

Prince Hayden was ushered down the hall and into the study.

Tristan called a servant, and gave instructions that they were not to be disturbed. He shut the door and locked it. Then, he turned to face his friend. “How may I serve you, Your Highness?”

The prince bowed his head, pulling something from around his neck. He then stepped forward and placed it around that of his friend.

Tristan stood transfixed, staring at the ruby attached to the golden necklace he now wore. “Your Highness, I…”

Prince Hayden held up a hand. “It is yours. I should never have taken it. I am sorry, my friend.”

The young noble stared dumbfounded. “But it is your right…”

“Nevertheless, it was not mine to take. It was a gift from your mother. I have been selfish, Tristan. Please, forgive me.”

His friend started to tremble, releasing the ruby and letting it hang from his neck. “It is not my place, Your Highness.”

“Tristan please, we are friends. Being your prince does not change that. And, as a friend, I am asking for your forgiveness.”

The youth spoke with a shiver in his voice, “Forgive me, Your Highness. I do not know what I should say.”

Hayden clenched his fist in frustration.

Tristan bowed. “Your Highness, I am sorry if I have upset you.”

“No, my friend, it is I who should apologize. You were merely being respectful of my station. I will not ask for your forgiveness. But I want you to know that I value our friendship. Tell me, at least, how you feel.”

The young noble nodded, “This wa
s a gift from my mother. I am happy to hold it once more. Thank you.”

Hayden smiled, “You are a true friend, Tristan. Henceforth, it is my fervent desire to be worthy of your friendship.”

The blond-haired youth looked at Hayden, as if seeing him for the very first time.

Hayden broke the tension, “On our visit to Harnow, you obtained new star charts.”

Tristan perked up at that. “Oh, yes.” He pointed at the charts on his desk.

The prince sat down. “I would like to see them.”

His friend bore a curious expression. “I would think that you might find such things to be dull and disinteresting.”

Hayden grinned, “I might surprise you.” And with that, he beckoned for his friend to sit with him as they studied a map of the stars.

Elsewhere, Lady Persephone stirred from her meditation. A vision had come to her: she saw the youth named Tristan, his fingers caressing a ruby necklace.

The nymph smiled. Very well, husband. You have started upon the path. Your journey will be a long one. Perhaps you will find the peace you seek.

  ***

Later that day, Prince Hayden met his friend Ernest coming from the horse stable.

  His friend bowed, “Your Highness.”

“Ernest, I have been looking for you.”

“I was out riding. How may I serve you?”

Hayden gave a sly grin. “Are you aware of the feast that is being held tomorrow?”

“I have heard of it, Your Highness.”

“And will you be in attendance?”

Ernest replied, “If you wish me to be.”

Hayden placed a hand on his shoulder. “I should like to hear your wishes, my friend.”

The dark-haired youth scratched his stubbly cheek. “There is to be a dance after the meal. Such festivities do not interest me.”

His friend stated, “When we journeyed to Harnow, you partook.”

Ernest responded, “I was invited there by the Prince of Androtopia. And I was in the presence of my King. If you request me to be at the feast, then I shall attend.”

Hayden gave a sigh. “I would not wish you to come if you are not interested. But I do believe Lady Estelle will be disappointed.”

Ernest’s eyes went wide. “Lady Estelle?”

“Oh, yes. I happened to see her earlier and we spoke about you.”

His friend tried to remain calm. “You did?”

Hayden chuckled. “Oh yes. She was intrigued and seemed very eager to meet you.” He shook his head, “I guess I must tell her you are not interested…”

Ernest assured, “I am interested. I would like to meet Lady Estelle. Thank you, Your Highness.”

His friend held up a hand. “No thanks are needed. But I hope that you will enjoy the… festivities.”

“I am sure I will.” The youth looked at him strangely. “Why are you doing this?”

Hayden gave a look of surprise. “We are friends. Are we not?”

“Yes, we are. You have my thanks.”

“And you, my friend, have an engagement. Please be sure to be groomed and finely clothed. It is my reputation at stake.”

Ernest assured, “Your reputation is the greatest of my concerns, Your Highness.”

“Yes, I am well aware that you damage it at your leisure,” Hayden smirked.

His friend grinned. “I would not wish to disappoint you.”

Hayden clapped him on the shoulder. “Please do,” he laughed.

  Ernest chuckled.

Lady Persephone could feel their mirth from where she was. My husband, you have brought joy to another. Has selfishness given way to consideration? Perhaps you are learning kindness and humility. It starts with those you cherish, and will spread to all. Be diligent, and you shall see the fruits of your labors.

  Chapter 6: “A Curse and a Blessing”

There were stark changes in the demeanor of Prince Hayden. His arrogance gave way to humility; indifference gave way to concern; selfishness gave way to generosity. He was kind to friends, family and the people of Androtopia. He gave them all his love and they grew to love him more. And his love was not of the soft, malleable kind. The prince showed kindness through strength. If a person were wronged, he made sure they received recompense and the guilty party was punished. Yet, Hayden was merciful and fair in all of his dealings.

Prince Hayden studied King Thaddeus’ example and did his best to emulate it. He would ask questions and the father would impart wisdom to his son.

Hayden sought out his mother, spending time learning from her. Having come from among them, she understood the people well. He was able to gain their perspectives thereby, and began to diligently ponder what he might do to help them.

Lady Persephone visited her people often, with his blessing. And the nymph began to look more and more favorably on her husband. He grew accustomed to her approving smile and those emerald green eyes would frequently drift in his direction. When he kissed her, she would respond. And she would pleasure him often and in various and wonderful ways.

He truly grew to delight in her company, basking in her wisdom.

And she was always eager to teach what was right, and to condemn what was shameful.

When she left to visit her people, he would be anxious for her return. The prince pined away in her absence, wishing that he could share in that part of her existence. As her husband, he longed to befriend her little ones: to be the paternal influence to her maternal one. But he was reminded of the covenant. He would not break it. And so, with a heavy heart, he acknowledged within there would always be a part of her that was kept from him.

Surely, she can see that I have changed! I pose no threat to them. Her people are dear to her and they will be dear to me. And the little ones she cherishes most. I will love them, too. Why must we always be separated? When the covenant was made, I bore shame. But she loves me now. I am a different man; one worthy of her affections… and those of her people.

  ***

They knelt together on the floor, basking in the enjoyment of each other’s company. The man spoke, “My love, I have a request.”

She stared at him curiously, “Very well.”

Hayden hesitated, choosing his words carefully. “Do you remember when I asked you to tell me my future?”

The elf nodded. “I offered to tell you what could be, for the future depends on the choices you now make.”

He gave a look of understanding and then proceeded. “I ask but one thing. My love, will I always be kept from your… people?”

Lady Persephone looked right at him. “Human, you do imperil yourself with such words. Remember the covenant.”

The young man bowed his head. “I am sorry, my love. I had hoped the changes I have made would have remedied the need for it.”

She reached out tenderly and took hold of his hand. “You have done much good, Hayden. But know that which has been done can be so easily undone.”

“But why must there always be a separation between me and… them? Have I not proven my good will? They are dear to you, why are they kept from me?”

She spoke evenly, “To keep you from temptation. And to protect those I hold dear.”

He assured, “I would not threaten them.”

Lady Persephone reminded, “You have. And you can do so again. If you love me, then do not endanger them with your careless words.”

He placed his other hand over hers. “Milady, I love you. I have given you my all. I only ask for the chance to earn your trust.”

She informed, “You wish to break the covenant: that which binds me to you. I do not long for release. I have grown fond of you, Hayden. You have my love, and so do they. I can love both of you without forsaking either. But there is that within you, which would threaten the love we share.”

The young man urged, “Let me go with you next time you visit them. I will prove there is nothing to fear. I am not the same person that I once was.”

Lady Persephone leaned forward. “I s
ee the desire in your eyes to take that which is not yours. I have had visions of where this lust will take you. Heed wisdom, Hayden. Be not yourself taken. If you love me, then the covenant must remain unbroken. The Queen’s elves do not bear shame. And you have lifted your own, Hayden. But I see it in your eyes: that which was lifted can fall again. And it shall not fall upon those I hold dear.”

Hayden shook with frustration, pulling away from her. “So be it, my love. The covenant will remain unbroken. But know this: the separation grieves me at my heart.”

She nodded, “Your sacrifice is appreciated.”

  ***

“Why must she be so cruel Tristan?” The prince of Androtopia paced back and forth in his friend’s study.

The young noble glanced over at the star charts he had been perusing earlier. “Your Highness, she is a dark elf. They have a reputation for cruelty.”

  “But I am her love.”

Tristan assured, “One must always be wary when loved by a dark elf. They tend to hurt those they cherish the most. It is what makes them irresistible…”

Prince Hayden looked at him strangely. Then, he continued, “But how can we be together, and yet, separate? She would never do this to one of her… people.” He paused, glancing about fearfully.

His friend asked, “What is this agreement that you mentioned?”

The prince cast about for a way to explain the covenant without actually breaking it. “Our marriage hinges on it, Tristan. She agreed to marry me as long as I never again speak of her… people.”

“But you are speaking to me about them...”

Hayden became exasperated. “I am using ‘people’ in place of another term.”

  Tristan stared at him confused.
