  Chapter One ~ Vivian

“I can’t believe you’re getting married on Valentine’s Day. Who even does that?” I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned against the wall, watching my best friend, Dani, apply her mascara.

“Just because you don’t believe in love, Vivian, doesn’t mean the rest of the world doesn’t.” She didn’t even miss a beat, continuing to apply her makeup.

I snorted and pushed off the wall to sit on the edge of the bed. I inspected my perfectly manicured nails I had done the previous day. “I used to believe in love. Then I walked into my boyfriend’s office to find his secretary on her knees, sucking his dick.” I fell back on the bed with a sigh. “I’m a walking cliche.”

I was giving her a hard time, but I really was happy for my best friend. We’d known each other since we were five years old and I couldn’t be more thrilled that she’d found someone - even if they had only been dating three months and getting married on the cheesiest made up holiday ever.

The way they met was even something out of a cheesy chick flick. They literally bumped into each other in a coffee shop in the morning. Dani spilled her coffee all over his suit. They exchanged numbers because she insisted on paying for his dry cleaning and the rest is history.

Dani turned around and put her hands on her slim hips. Her blonde hair was still up in a messy bun, but her makeup was flawless. “You’re being a little dramatic, aren’t you?” She rolled her eyes at me before releasing her hair so it flowed down to the middle of her back. “Besides, you know Parker is one of the good ones.”

I got up off the bed to inspect my own hair and makeup. “I know, you probably found the last good one out there.” I picked up one of her lipsticks and inspected it. “I’ve decided to forget men for awhile - if not forever - and focus on my career.” I tossed the lipstick down and went back to sit on the bed.

I was the head of marketing for the largest ad agency in Chicago. I worked eighty hours a week, leaving little time for much else. I loved my job and would have no trouble throwing myself into my work to forget about Gabe, the man I had been with for the past five years and the one I thought I was going to marry.

Dani shook her head at me as she combed her fingers through her hair. “Be careful, Vivian. You’ll die a lonely old maid who ends up living alone and being eaten by her cats.”

We both started laughing. “Sounds about right.” I did love cats and had two of them back at my apartment.

I pulled my lip gloss out of my purse and applied some to my lips. “So tell me more about Parker’s brother. He looks cute from the pictures I’ve seen but he’s a country boy, isn’t he? And what kind of name is Chip? Does he dress in overalls?” I scrunched up my nose and laughed.

Chip was Parker’s older brother and best man. We’d never met and I was curious about the guy I was going to be paired with for the festivities this weekend. I knew Parker grew up on a farm but he hadn’t lived there since graduating high school. Chip was still there and from what Dani told me, he ran the farm.

“Yes, he’s cute. He’s a nice guy. And single.” She wiggled her eyebrows at me and I rolled my eyes.

“But he’s a country boy that lives on a farm. I live in Chicago. Like in Chicago. I’m not interested in dating someone that smells like manure all the time. Besides, I just broke up with my boyfriend a week ago.”

“Whatever.” My best friend waved her hand as if to dismiss me. “You knew that relationship with Gabe was going nowhere. Just the week before you were questioning if you should even stay with him. Chip is cute and single. You’re cute and single. Maybe the two of you can have some fun this weekend.” She shrugged and before I could say anything else, the door opened. Dani’s fiancé, Parker, walked into their apartment.

“Hey, babe,” he said with a smile and pulled Dani to him for a long kiss. I couldn’t help but smile and feel a slight pang of jealousy. Even I had to admit it would be nice to be greeted like that. In all of our time together, Gabe never did anything like that.

“You ruined my lip gloss,” Dani protested half heartedly, a silly grin on her face. She turned back to the mirror by the door to touch it up. “Where is Chip?”

He watched his fiancée re-apply lip gloss. “He was helping Mom and Dad get settled at the hotel and said he’d meet us at the bar.”

“You left a country boy all by himself to find his way to a bar in downtown Chicago? You’re brave.” I couldn’t help but jab at him even if he wasn’t here to defend himself.

I couldn’t fathom growing up on a farm in the middle of nowhere. My family had always lived in downtown Chicago and it was my favorite place in the whole world. There was so much to do and see. I loved the hustle and bustle of it all. And back in our early twenties, Dani and I owned this city.

Farm life seemed so boring to me.

Parker shook his head with a grin. “My family may own a farm, but we’re not country bumpkins. You’ll see.”

Dani turned and narrowed her eyes at me in an evil glare. “You be nice this weekend. It’s our weekend and I want everyone to get along.” She turned back to the mirror and I stuck my tongue out at Parker.

Dani was right when she called him one of the good ones. He treated my best friend like gold and the way he looked at her when she walked into a room made my heart race. We got along great and I loved him like a brother.

Parker grinned. “And she means business. I wouldn’t mess with her.”

I slid my phone into my purse and laughed. “Oh, trust me, I know better than to mess with Dani.”

“Good.” She came over to me and slid her arm through mine. “Now let's go have some fun like old times. I can’t wait for you to meet Chip. I think the two of you are going to hit it off.”

I didn’t bother to respond and followed the two of them out of the apartment. We caught a cab to the bar and mainly discussed the wedding on the way. It was going to be a fairly small affair since it was such short notice. Only Chip and I were standing up and there would be mainly family, friends, and a few colleagues there. Weddings in Chicago weren’t cheap, especially when planned last minute.

We pulled up to the bar and Parker got out first. He helped us out and we hurried inside. February in Chicago wasn’t the warmest.

The bar was fairly busy for a Thursday night. It was full of people our age, some getting a drink after a long day at work and some friends meeting for a night out on the town. Music was playing in the background, but thankfully not too loud that we couldn’t hear ourselves talk. We found a table and sat down.

“Is Chip here yet?” Dani looked around. I couldn’t help but look around as well, trying to spot the best man. My heart
was pounding a little and my stomach fluttering but I had no idea why. He was just another guy; I’d met hundreds of them. No big deal. I told myself it was just wedding excitement.

Parker glanced down at his phone. “Not yet.” His fingers moved over his phone screen as he sent him a text. “I’ll go to the bar and get us some drinks. The usual, ladies?”

We both nodded and smiled. Dani and I liked the same drink and I’d hung out with the two of them enough in the short time they’d been dating for him to know what I liked.

“Okay, I’ll be right back.” He kissed Dani’s temple before heading to the bar.

“He really loves you, doesn't he?” I said with a sigh.

Her eyes filled with tears as she smiled. “He does. And I love him. I know people are saying we’re moving fast and all that, but when you know, you just know. We don’t want to waste another minute.”

I reached out and squeezed her hand. “I’m so happy for the two of you. I really am. And thank you for asking me to be your maid of honor and such a big part of your day.” Now my eyes were filling up with tears.

“Of course!” She squeezed my hand in return. “We’ve both been talking about our weddings since we were thirteen. I wouldn’t have anyone else standing next to me up there.”

We laughed and wiped the corners of our eyes with the napkins on the table as Parker walked back up. “What is going on here, ladies? Why the tears?” He set our drinks down and wrapped an arm around Dani’s waist. “This is a happy occasion.”

“We’re just being sentimental. I’m so happy for you guys.” I narrowed my eyes and pointed at him. “But if you ever hurt my best friend, I’ll kill you.” I was lightening the mood, but I had a feeling the whole weekend would be full of emotional moments like that. Why not when your best friend is marrying the love of her life?

Parker pulled Dani to him. “Not a chance.” She turned to look up at him and they enhanced a soft kiss. I watched with a grin when there was someone behind me, clearing their throat.

“Excuse me. Could you please get a room?” They broke apart and I turned around to see who the asshole was making a comment about my friend when I saw a tall drink of water wearing a worn out baseball cap. He looked different than the picture Dani showed me, but close enough for me to know who it was.

“Hey there, asshole, about time you get here!” Parker pulled away from Dani and greeted his brother with a handshake and hug.

Dani jumped off of her chair and hugged Chip as well. “It’s so good to see you.” She turned to me. “This is my best friend and maid of honor, Vivian.”

He grinned and I was thankful I was sitting, because I think my knees went weak. His dark hair peeked out from the edge of the cap. He was wearing a long maroon henley, jeans, and boots. I could tell from the way the jeans fit him, farm work suited him. It was his smile and the way his green eyes twinkled that made my stomach do flip flops.

“Hi there, Vivian,” he said, taking my hand. “It’s nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you.”

Maybe farm boys weren’t so bad.

  Chapter Two ~ Chip

  Wow.

From the pictures I’d seen, I knew Vivian was a pretty girl, but I had no idea how beautiful until I met her in person. Her chocolate brown hair was past her shoulders and even in the dimly lit bar, I could detect hints of an almost caramel like color throughout it. Her brown eyes danced as she smiled at me.

To be honest, the other night I had been stalking Vivian a bit on social media. She was a smart girl and had her Facebook and Instagram locked tight so strangers couldn’t see much, but I was able to look at some pictures Dani and her were tagged in together. Her smile was electric and I knew from Dani she was a runner and also loved hiking outside, so her body was amazing as well.

Vivian wasn’t like the girls back home. She was classy and refined and probably thought she was too good for a farm boy like me. Being from a small town, there weren’t a whole lot of choices for dating. I’d had a few girlfriends, but nothing too serious. Truth be told, most of the girls in Mineral Point didn’t excite me. They lacked fire and passion - the kind of passion I saw in Vivian’s eyes when I looked at her.

I hadn’t given much thought to standing up with her at my brother’s wedding until then. Running a farm was hard work and there were little to no days off, but I wouldn’t miss my brother’s wedding for the world.

“It’s nice to meet you too,” Vivian replied, letting go of my hand.

“How about a drink?” Parker grabbed my arm and we headed to the bar. I found myself glancing back at Vivian, but she was already leaned over, talking to Dani about something.

“So what do you think of Vivian?” he asked as we waited for my beer.

I turned and grinned at my brother, resting an elbow on the bar. “Seriously, I just met her. Are you two so in love you have to match make everyone around you? Besides she’s a city girl. We have zero in common.”

He smiled sheepishly and shrugged his shoulders. “It’s Dani’s idea. I think if she’s married, she wants her best friend married or at least with someone as well. And you might have more in common than you realize. Remember, I was once a country boy as well, but that didn’t scare Dani away.”

“You’re not a country boy anymore. You’ve been living in this awful city too long. I don’t know how you do it.” I shook my head. The traffic and all the people were driving me nuts and I was thankful I could leave on Sunday and get back to the peace and quiet of farm life. “And you guys are hilarious.” My beer arrived and I took a long swig. “Vivian’s cute and I’m sure she’s fun but it would never work.”

“Well, maybe you two can have some fun this weekend.” He smirked and headed back to the girls. I followed behind, shaking my head. I was all for some fun, but I hadn’t intended on getting laid this weekend. I was going to be the best man at my brother’s wedding and then get back to work on the farm.

Back at the table, Parker stood by his fiancée and wrapped an arm possessively around her waist. He leaned down and whispered something in her ear, causing her to blush and giggle. It was cute and even I had to admit, it made me a little jealous I hadn’t found what they had yet.

Maybe one day, but it was hard when you essentially worked twenty-four/seven and there weren’t many women to choose from.

“They're so happy, aren’t they?” Vivian leaned over and asked, causing me to catch a whiff of her lilac scent.

“They are.” I nodded in agreement. “I had to admit that I was skeptical when he told me they were getting married already, but they seem so in love. And a wedding on Valentine’s Day? How cliche.”

“Same.” She nodded and laughed. “But that’s the cynic in me I guess. I don’t believe in love at first sight. Sorry, I’m a little bitter right now - bad breakup recently.”

“Sorry to hear that.” I set my beer on the table. So she was single.

“Thanks, but don’t be. He was an asshole I should have dumped a long time ago.” She took a sip of her wine. “But enough about me. How about you?”

“Well, I don’t believe in love at first sight either. I have not had a bad breakup recently, and I am single as they come.” I grinned at her and she gave me a small smile.

Dani and Parker turned their attention back to us and the four of us discussed the wedding plans for a bit. Tomorrow night was the rehearsal dinner and the wedding was Saturday. Sunday we were meeting for brunch before I went back to the farm and they took off for their honeymoon to Cancun.

After a few rounds of drinks, Parker and Dani headed to the dance floor, leaving Vivian and me looking at each other awkwardly. Like I said to Parker, the two of us had nothing in common other than the two of them and had nothing to talk about.

I noticed her wine glass was almost empty. “How about another drink?”

She finished off what was left of her wine and nodded. “Sure. Let’s go to the bar.” She jumped off her bar stool and brushed her breasts against my arm. My co
ck stirred a little; I was definitely attracted to this girl.

I followed behind her as we weaved our way through the crowd to the bar. I couldn’t help but check out her ass in her tight jeans.

  “Nice ass.”

I looked over and noticed a guy in a suit also checking her out. “What did you say?” My blood started to boil.

“Come on, country boy, I saw you looking at her too. She has a killer ass.” He nudged his friend next to him with this elbow. “Am I right?”

I clenched my fists at my sides. I started to lunge at him when I felt a hand on my arm. That was not how a man talked to a lady.

“Just leave him. I’m used to it. It’s no big deal. He probably has a tiny penis anyway.” She winked at me and I calmed down.

She pulled me away from the asshole as his friends started laughing at him. What the hell had come over me? I had never been a jealous person, but his comment pissed me off. Besides, she wasn’t really my date tonight anyway.

“Sorry,” I muttered when we got to the bar. “I hate dickheads like that.”

“No worries. Believe it or not, I can take care of myself.” She smiled and moved closer, shoving me a little bit. “Now I think it’s time for some shots.” She waved the bartender over and ordered us a couple of shots of Jack Daniel’s.

I raised my eyebrows and shook my head. “If I do shots, this night is going to get crazy real fast, especially Jack.”

She lifted her shot glass and set the other in front of me. “Good. I’ve been working too hard lately and not having any fun. From what I’ve heard, you’re pretty similar. My best friend and your little brother are getting married on Valentine’s Day. Let your hair down a little and relax.”
