“They’ve found it,” he whispers, his voice low and raspy. “They’ve found a solution to the time paradox.”
I take a step back, gasping. My heart leaps into my throat and goosebumps rise on my limbs.
“They…found an answer?” I say around the lump in my throat.
“Yes, my darling. They’ve found a way to return to Earth without causing a paradox. We can save your sister.”
“When can I leave?” I ask, turning toward my bedroom to pack. He grabs my arm and pulls me back to him, running his knuckles over my cheek.
“You can’t go, beloved. You carry the heir to Mars in your womb. You are my queen. I cannot allow you to risk your life.”
“But Abigail. She won’t come if I don’t go get her.”
“We will send the best men on Mars. They can convince her to come.”
I shake my head. I know my sister. She won’t just follow a bunch of aliens into a spaceship after studying alien abductions for ten years. A tear slides down my cheek, and I shake my head, feeling completely lost.
“I’ll go,” Sophia says.
I turn to her, a shiver going down my spine. Sophia is a good gymnast but doing double backflips is about as far as her bravery extends.
“Sophia. You can’t.”
“I can and I will. I want to save Abigail as much as anyone. And she’s going to need someone she knows to convince her to come.”
“It’s a perfect solution, my love.”
I look up at Damious and then over at my best friend. I feel like everything I want is being held out to me for the taking. I’m the Queen of Mars. I am carrying the heir to the throne in my womb. The scientists have found a solution that will allow us to retrieve my sister. And my very best friend has offered to risk her own life to bring her back here.

“I can’t let you take the risk,” I tell her, taking her hand.

My heart flutters as I look up at my king. He has kept his promises. He takes me in his arms and kisses my head.
“Thank you, Damious,” I whisper.
He tilts my chin up to look into his eyes. “I would move heaven and earth just to see you smile.”
