I am also very grateful to Celia Mill, sister-in-law extraordinaire, who provided me with a wonderful writing retreat during a couple of crucial times when I was really struggling with this one. Your wonderful friendship and writing companionship has been so very precious and sitting in our turreted room, looking out over the sea has been such a treat – thank you!

My superfriend and writing buddy, Mhairi Simpson, who now lives too far away, once again has stepped in with quantities of good advice, encouragement and the wonderful cover art. Thank you for not fading out of my life since your move – I so appreciate you making the effort to drive from Lincolnshire to stay in touch.

None of it would be possible without the steadfast support of John, who goes on believing in me and proves it every single day with his constant, unstinting help in storyboarding, proof reading and discussing ideas. Thank you for your love and encouragement, your belief, the cups of tea, salads in summer and casseroles in winter.

And finally, a big thank you to you, my readers. It has been so encouraging to hear from folks who have enjoyed the story so far and want to know what will happen next. Your enthusiasm makes all the hard work worthwhile.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born the same year as the Russians launched Sputnik, I confidently expected that by the time I reached adulthood, the human race would have a pioneer colony on the Moon and be heading off towards Mars. So I was at a loss to know what to do once I realised the Final Frontier wasn’t an option and rather lost my head - I tried a lot of jobs I didn’t like and married a totally unsuitable man.

Now I've finally come to terms with the fact that I’ll never leave Earth, I have a lovely time writing science fiction and fantasy novels, as well as teaching Creative Writing. I live in Littlehampton on the English south coast with a wonderful husband and a ridiculous number of books.
