Denise barely noticed the crash outside of her house. She had been thinking about going down to Charlie’s Grill to see if Danny Smith was tending bar. He sometimes worked the bar there when Charlie was out and even though Charlie wasn’t out that often, when Danny was there, he was always really nice to her. He would pour her a sloe gin fizz. She started drinking sloe gin fizzes when she heard the name of the drink in a movie and thought that it sounded like just about the best thing ever and even though it wasn’t the best thing, it was still kind of sweet and fizzy, like a soda with some kick. So she decided that it would be her thing, her drink, because it made her smile just to say it. Danny would tell her how nice she looked or pay her some other compliment. She knew Danny didn’t have a thing for her, but he was nice and nice to her, so that was good enough sometimes. Maybe some other guy would see Danny being nice to her and paying her a compliment and think that she was worth being nice to and paying a compliment or even just being a little bit interested in and might ask her out or just want to sit and talk. Right now, all she really wanted to do was have a nice conversation with someone who was a man and just a little bit interested in her. She wouldn’t even think about their wedding right away.

When the cell phone tower that looked like a pine tree crashed through the roof of her house, Denise barely had time to stop thinking about her wedding to the nice young man who she was going to meet tonight at Charlie’s. She barely had time to look up as her ceiling caved in on her. She hoped that Ivy was outside and would be okay. She loved Ivy.
