Scottie carried Ruby straight up the stairs and led her to his bedroom.
There was no way he was going to let her slip through his fingers ever again.
Fifty nine
She was letting him kiss every part of her body and realised that, within the past few hours, everything had changed.
His message had tipped her over and the sincerity in his voice made her want to see him, if only to check it was real.
And this was now en-route to a major problem.
Scottie kissed passionately, her mouth filled with his tongue and she didn’t want to let him go.
Something was telling her it wasn’t going to work out.
A few months ago, when they didn’t know too much about each other, seemed like another time and place.
His hand was massaging between her legs, circling then stroking as his mouth travelled down her chest plate to her breasts, sucking and caressing each one in turn.
She realised she was on the verge of coming and let out an impromptu groan.
‘Ruby, hold on,’ he said, pushing inside her, an orgasm rocketing her body from having him hump her slowly, still willing her to come with his fingers. ‘I love you.’
‘Don’t say it,’ she groaned, meeting his eyes. ‘Please?’
‘I can’t stop it. I love you. You need to know, you have to believe me.’
Closing her eyes, she held onto his smooth shoulders and felt his lips on her face, kissing her gently, his skin against hers.
Then he started to thrust really quickly, still his fingers moving until she couldn’t hold back and felt her fanny was on fire, losing consciousness for a moment, hearing him groan loudly into her ear. Both of them moaning as they came. Ruby’s body shook.
He grabbed her face, still shivering. She could smell her scent on his fingers.
‘Look at me. I love you Ruby, I really love you very much. I’m sorry. You have to let me make it up to you, please?’
‘I told you not to say it,’ she said quietly, seeing his face scrunch up. ‘It’s too complicated and it won’t work.’
‘Talk to me, tell me why. I’m not going to let you go again.’
‘You might not have a choice.’
He closed his eyes and she realised he looked genuinely upset, biting his bottom lip.
‘I’ve missed you but this can’t go anywhere, trust me, it’s not good for you.’
‘Ruby, I-.’
‘Don’t,’ she said, putting her fingers on his lips. ‘Don’t say it.’
‘I’m going to keep on saying it until you believe me.’
It was him moving closer that woke her up a few hours later. Ruby looked at his sleeping face and wanted to kiss him. She was overwhelmed with sadness, knowing she was going to have to let him go. Deep down she didn’t want to but being with her would ultimately ruin his career.
Helen Trott would see to that.
Gently, she removed his arms and placed them around a pillow before she got up, taking her clothes and walking to the bathroom. She had a quick shower, using his toothbrush to clean her teeth.
Glancing at the mirror, she wanted to cry then let out a miserable sigh.
Her heart slumped knowing she was going to have to leave him.
That hurt harder than she anticipated.
Quietly walking down the corridor, she descended the stairs.
‘Where are you going?’ he asked, standing by the bedroom door, looking stunned and sleepy. ‘You can’t leave now.’
‘Aren’t the kids coming?’ she replied, turning to see his naked torso, making her smile.
She realised how much she loved him and, in her head, them making love was her chance to say goodbye. Immediately she glanced to the ground not to betray her feelings.
‘Ruby, you’re not going until you tell me everything. I can cancel the kids and -.’
‘No, you can’t do that.’
‘I don’t have to pick them up until later. Katya will probably pull out, it happens. Riley will want to go to the park. Come with us for lunch and-.’
‘No,’ she said, shaking her head. He walked towards her. ‘I don’t think this is going to work and the kids shouldn’t get involved. We were going too fast last time and now, it’s something we shouldn’t mix.’
Scottie stepped down, until he was standing at eye level.
‘I meant what I said,’ he mumbled, kissing her face. ‘I love you and I made a mistake. I’ve missed you and nothing’s more important than being with the person you love. My children mean the world to me but you mean everything, right now.’
She closed her eyes and swallowed hard.
‘Don’t say it,’ she sighed. ‘I asked you not to tell me.’
‘I have to keep on telling you until you believe me.’
‘Please stop.’
‘Just tell me everything Ruby. I want to know.’
Her heart was pounding fast as she knew there would be no alternative.
She’d have to tell him the truth.
Everything.
Ruby wondered if he was indeed prepared to hear her tell it how it is.
Sixty
Considering they’d hardly spoken to each other since she arrived, he didn’t care. Ruby was sitting next to him on the patio, his arm around her as she sipped a cup of tea. He only had his boxers on and she was in his dressing gown.
The early-morning sunshine was warm and he didn’t want her to go.
Bob Marley was playing in the background.
He grinned, ecstatic he had been given a second chance.
Again he kissed her forehead and Ruby let out a little sigh.
‘Tell me,’ she said, turning her head to look at him. ‘You’re obviously very loyal towards your job.’
Scottie closed his eyes for a moment, shaking his head.
‘I wasn’t trying to be cruel when I mentioned about you being a journalist. It’s when I looked into it, it was a pretty scathing investigation and people got hurt.’
‘You told me you didn’t mean it. Us.’ Ruby looked upset and he felt instantly sick. ‘Like I said yesterday, I thought that weekend we spent together you were being genuine.’
‘I was. I am.’
‘For how long? A day or until tomorrow? Or until you to nip me in the bud, isn’t that what you said? I can see from your garden, you were comparing me to some of those wild bushes growing in the corner.’
She let out a little laugh but the comment hurt.
‘I said a lot and it was all utter shit,’ he replied, letting his head hang down, recoiling in shame. ‘I was thrown that you knew Sebastian and then that incident all those years back. We hated your paper and the journalists.’
‘And you think I love the police? When I clicked you could be a copper, I wasn’t happy but, by then, I’d fallen for you. I decided to follow my heart. A fat lot of good that did.’
‘Oh god Ruby,’ he said, wrapping his arms around her and burying his face into her hair. ‘Of course you’re going to hate the police, especially as the highest ranking officer in the Met slept with your husband.’
There was a sharp shove into his chest as she scowled.
‘That was just the icing on the cake, if you really want to know. He hurt me by fucking her but then again, she didn’t get what she wanted. After his blip, he deserted his son in shame. Then he thought he could run back to me. I refused and it took nearly eighteen long months to get out of my marriage.’ She ran her fingers through her hair, giving him a sideways glance. ‘Have you slept with her?’
‘God no!’ he said, shocked by the question then remembering the kiss. ‘I don’t sleep around and especially not with my boss.’
‘Your names match. Scott and Trott. You could have a television show.’
‘I’ve never had sex with her,’ he replied earnestly.
‘See, if I’d have had your guidelines then I wouldn’t have slept with Hugh. But when the paedophile thing kicked off, he supported me. And Sebastian? He tried his best to ma
ke sure I was protected from the people wanting to rip me to shreds.’
‘He was genuinely shocked about what you said last night. Don’t be mad at Seb. I wanted to see you and I forced him to arrange it. He wasn’t willing but I knew you wouldn’t have seen me even if I begged. And I was going to beg, believe me, or get you arrested. One of the two.’
She smiled, leaning closer and kissed him gently on the lips.
‘And he’s not told you anything else, other than I was on the news team that shafted the corrupt coppers?’
Scottie kissed her face, smelling her skin which had the mint scent of the shower gel he bought for Riley. It made him smile.
‘Let’s go back to bed. I need to make love to you. It’s been weeks,’ he murmured. ‘We can talk later.’
He stroked her thigh trying to move up higher then felt her hand stopping him.
‘Jonathan, I need to be honest with you,’ she said, looking into his eyes.
‘Don’t call me ‘Jonathan’. I prefer it when you say ‘Scottie’. Actually I prefer it when you say ‘oh god, yes’.’
She laughed.
It was the first time Ruby had done since she arrived and it made him smile, to hear the dirty tone and see her face light up.
‘What do you want from me?’ she asked, stroking his cheek. ‘Other than a leg over?’
‘I want to be with you and get to know what really makes you happy, what makes you sad.’
‘You did that.’
‘I won’t do that again. I want to spend all my spare time with you.’
‘What’s that going to be? Five minutes a week?’ Ruby chuckled and shook her head. ‘Can’t you see it’s not going to work? Now I know where you are in the pecking order, it’s simply impossible.’
‘Why’s it impossible?’
‘Let me see, are you ready for the list?’ she asked, standing up and looking down at him.
Scottie knew he was very much in love and looked at her painted toe nails up to her hair, which was gorgeous and tousled. Ruby couldn’t say anything to change his mind.
He was hooked and grinned at her beautiful face.
‘You look like a mad man.’
‘I’m a man madly in love with you.’
‘Stop saying it. Right, can I start? You wanted me to talk, so talk away I will. You have to keep this strictly confidential. Only a few people know about it. You might be shocked to know Sebastian knew about this first.’
‘I asked Sebastian if he ever slept with you,’ he said, watching Ruby roll her eyes. ‘He said he didn’t but he wanted to.’
‘I actually kicked him in the balls when he got frisky. He laughed so hard afterwards because he knew I’d started seeing Hugh. Little tinker was trying to see if I’d put out even when I told him I was in love.’ She laughed out loudly. ‘You’ve got to give him credit for trying. In recent years, I’ve been a bit scathing of him, especially when he took on defending her then all hell broke loose. I felt betrayed but he had to think about his career. I bet his house in Notting Hill is massive, isn’t it?’
‘A mansion,’ Scottie laughed. ‘I do love that man. He’s a very good friend and I can’t see why us being together is wrong. I accept what you do for a living and you accept what I do, don’t you?’
‘I respect the police but not what you do. The fact you’re an Assistant Commissioner and have to work with Helen Trott. That changes a lot of things.’
He wasn’t listening. The dressing gown had come undone and he was looking at her breasts, his eyes quickly moved down. She noticed and retied it.
‘Spoil sport,’ he sighed, pulling her closer and undoing the band, pushing the material apart as he buried his head between her bosoms.
Automatically, his tongue started licking her skin. He placed his hands firmly on her arse.
‘Don’t you think your neighbours might have something to say?’ she asked, trying to push him away.
‘‘Lucky bastard’ I think is what they’ll be saying,’ he laughed. ‘Anyway, no one can see anything other than me.’
‘Listen to me baby Commissioner,’ she said, quickly sinking to her knees and looking up at him. ‘I need to talk to you and you do need to listen. Can you do that for five minutes?’
‘I want to make love to you. That’s all I can think about right now. Please can we just do that?’
Scottie launched for her lips so she wouldn’t protest, pulling her up so he could open the dressing gown and stroke her smooth body. He could have come in his pants, there and then, he was so turned on.
Ruby managed to pull away and looked up at him and said, ‘Let’s go back in.’
He didn’t take much persuasion, taking her straight into the living room. He took off his boxers and stripped her naked, sinking to his knees so he could put his tongue between her thighs and taste her. He felt her nub with the end of his tongue but wanted more.
Scottie clasped her hands and made her lie on the sofa. He buried his head in her musky juices, gently biting her, all the time watching her gasp and close her eyes.
Pushing in his middle finger, he pulled it in and out, never releasing her from between his lips. He moved his head from side to side as she groaned out deeply in ecstasy, her body shaking from an orgasm.
Scottie was turned on watching her, he couldn’t hold back.
Getting to his knees, he slowly slipped in, grabbing her hips and humping really hard. Then he noticed she was watching him. He closed his eyes, going harder, putting her legs on his shoulders, until all he could hear were her juices squelching and the panting.
‘Oh god,’ he heard her groan.
He quickly pulled out and placed Ruby on his lap, making her sit on him.
Taking her hips, he helped her move up and down his shaft. She buried her face into his neck, tightly holding onto his shoulders. She was saying something quietly while gulping.
Then like a bolt, his orgasm made him lose a second as she let out a groan. Scottie ground his hips into her, squeezing every last jot of his ecstasy.
He unceremoniously grabbed her tightly then collapsed onto the sofa, squashing her underneath as he closed his eyes. Her hand wiped his mouth then she touched his back.
‘Did you say something?’ he asked, not being able to make it out.
‘I love you,’ she whispered.
Scottie laughed out loudly, before saying, ‘I didn’t expect anything less.’
Sixty one
‘Can we talk now?’ she asked, feeling his weight against her, realising he wasn’t going to let go. ‘After you’ve recovered from your minor heart attack.’
‘Yes,’ he groaned, rolling off, trying to catch his breath.
Ruby realised she needed to stop whatever juices from running down her thigh, so immediately got up and went into the kitchen, grabbing kitchen towel and dabbing between her legs.
When she turned, he was sitting lengthways on the sofa, one leg hanging off and grinning at her, his face flushed, looking gorgeous. Then he smiled and she felt a shudder of happiness. Throwing the tissue away, she headed towards him to tug at the dressing gown underneath his arse but he wasn’t budging.
‘Can I put this on?’
‘No,’ Scottie smiled. ‘I want to look at you. Ruby, you look so gorgeous, do you know that? Have you been away? You’ve got a tan. God, let’s stay in bed all day.’
‘I don’t think I could cope with you on heat and, as you asked, I went to Ibiza a few weeks ago. I hate going topless but you can see the bikini marks.’
‘You’re turning me on. Can I see you in a bikini?’
‘Please give me this?’ Ruby asked, trying to pull the garment. ‘I really can’t talk to you naked.’
‘Come on, make me happy. I’ve not seen you for such a long time. I want to remember everything about you.’
Shaking her head and trying not to laugh, she walked back to the kitchen and grabbed an apron, putting it on. It barely covered her breasts and the bottom half went over her knees.
&
nbsp; ‘Very sexy,’ he sighed.
She realised it was after ten and he hadn’t given her the chance to speak.
‘Do you want me to make you breakfast? I’m not really going to get much sense from you today, am I?’
‘Stay with me today, tomorrow, forever. I heard you told Seb that Theo was away until tomorrow.’
‘Hugh is going away for a couple of weeks so he wanted to spend time with his son. He was a crap husband but he’s a good dad.’
‘I was never unfaithful to any of my wives or lovers, if you want to know. I’m a very loyal man who believes in monogamy. Did you meet anyone else while we were apart?’ He looked stressed asking. ‘You were with that guy at the dinner. Who was he?’
‘An old friend and very platonic. Did you meet anyone else?’ Ruby didn’t know why she was asking. She didn’t want to know if he had. ‘Don’t tell me, it’s none of my business.’
‘I didn’t look at another woman. I kept thinking about you.’ He said it with such sincerity, she stood rooted to the spot. ‘Do you believe in it? Being faithful to one person, one person alone?’
Stepping back a little, she realised he meant every word. Ruby shook her head laughing.
He was the most perfect man she’d ever met.
‘Why would I divorce Hugh if I didn’t believe in it?’ She opened the fridge and took out some eggs and bacon then searched for the frying pan, trying to wipe the stupid grin from her face. ‘And I’m pleased you have morals.’
‘Can I have scrambled eggs?’ Scottie asked. She noticed he was closing his eyes. ‘And you know I like my bacon crispy, my tea hot and my women just like you.’
‘Romantic fool,’ she said, unable to hide the surge of happiness filling her chest.
Ruby shook her head, putting the grill on and started to prepare breakfast. She got the impression he didn’t want to hear what she had to say. He seemed happy in his own little world. And she was equally happy to be part of it.
Cooking away, she couldn’t help but smile at what she was going to tell him and knew it would be a major chunk of information for Scottie to absorb.
