“How’s your mate?” Marilyn asked with a hard emphasis on the word.

“Sleeping, poor baby, I seem to have worn him out,” Claudia offered back and caught the tip of her tongue between her teeth as she grinned and her eyes sparkled with amusement.

Marilyn cocked just the one eyebrow back at her. “Well, call me surprised,” she said in a dry tone.

“Jealous much?” Claudia chuckled and refilled the mug in front of Marilyn. “This is a full-service inquisition.”

“I don’t know about the inquisition, I think we might need an intervention,” Louann grumbled into her mug.

Marilyn pushed up from the stool and turned away. “Pass on an inquisition, an intervention, and the coffee,” she said, heading for the exit before they started in on her again.

“So, where were you last night?” Claudia called after her, and she grimaced. “All night.”

“All night?” Louann asked, and Marilyn kept walking. She didn’t need to explain herself to anyone, she was a grown woman, and Claudia’s attempt to get information from her by setting her mother the pitbull on her wasn’t going to work. “Marilyn?” her mother yelled, but she wasn’t falling for that one.

It was a new day, a new her, and she was going to live her life while she still had one to live. Who said midlife couldn’t be fun?

Marilyn stopped at the patio doors and looked out across the garden to where Neal was sitting on the wall. She smelled the coffee, and Claudia’s perfume came into the room before the woman did. When she came up alongside her, Marilyn knew the inquisition wasn’t over.

“Admit it,” Claudia said, looking out of the window at the vampire. “You like him.”

“Of course, I like him; he’s my friend.” Marilyn didn’t see the point in denying that one.

“No, you like him,” Claudia insisted.

“He saved Scott’s life, your life, and my life back in the day – what’s not to like?”

“So, where were you last night?”

“Scott’s place,” Marilyn said with a coy smile.

Claudia pouted for a long moment before she gave her friend a little nudge. “Isn’t that Neal’s place?”

“It is? Well, colour me shocked.” Marilyn said.

“I think you like-like him,” Claudia said with a lot more relish.

“What are you, ten?” Marilyn said. Then she raised her hand, and with a touch of magic, she clicked her fingers.

Claudia almost choked on her tongue as the fountains of ice-cold sprinkler water showered the vampire and the area around him. Neal yelped, jumped from the wall and took off from the back garden. “I like your style,” she chuckled.

Marilyn turned on her heels and started away from her. “I have a whole new perspective on life.”

“Oh, yeah, what is it?” Claudia called.

“No matter what your age – life is for living.”

Claudia brought the cup to her lips with a wicked smile. “Well, it’s about time,” she muttered, and sprinkled a little magic of her own, but only for her friend’s benefit. “May the good times last forever.”

  The End.
