“How's my patient doing?” Jake Tepesky asked as he brought in a tray of breakfast for her.

He’d done an amazing job of cheering her up and soothing her psyche. She had nightmares of waking up with the noose around her neck but couldn’t scream. Another nightmare to add to her long list of fears in the middle of the night.

“So, how’s my darling patient this morning?” Jake asked as he put her breakfast of oatmeal and warm milk on her lap.

Harri nodded her head and smiled. Jake scolded her for talking unless it was necessary.

“You’re being released today, the doctor just told me,” Jake said. “So, we need to decide about your going home.”

  “No stairs,” she croaked.

Jake smiled. “Well, about that.” What do you think about moving in together?”

Harri looked up at him in surprise and then couldn’t help but smile and nod.

Jake’s smile matched hers. “I was hoping you’d say that.” He sat down at the edge of her bed and took her hand in his.

“Harri, you can’t go back to your house. I hired some crime scene cleaners to…take care of things, but I don’t think you can go back there.”

Harri was quiet for a moment, and then she nodded in agreement.

“This is what I’m thinking, and I want to know how you feel. We both need a fresh start. And you hate climbing the stairs to my house, even though I have incredible views. So, what if we get a new place? Someplace that’s not Harri, not Jake, but that’s both of us. A place that’s just ours. What do you say?”

Jake watched her as she struggled to hold back her tears.

Finally, she nodded and whispered, “no stairs.”

Jake laughed and kissed her. “No stairs,” he said. “I promise.”

Their flight to Berlin was scheduled for the next week, and she needed to focus on getting her voice back. The doctor had told her that if she didn't speak and was careful not to move her neck, then she might be able to recover enough to get on a plane then.

That's exactly what she was going to do.
