  Chapter 3

Question for you HAIL, why don’t I receive stat increases or titles as is common in other games.

“Well there are a number of factors, the most important being that you are not in the real game, again this is
what many would consider the tutorial of the game. Worst part is, you haven’t even used the tutorial for its true purpose and you have been here for close to four days now.”

What is the true purpose of this area then?

“To unlock as many professions as you have the aptitude for.”

  Professions?

“Yes, Metallurgy, Fletching, Gardening, Rune-Working, Enchanting, among other standard professions, there are even supposed to be at least three hidden professions that can only be unlocked while here.”

Thinking back to the fact that Derick had already been here for close to four days he looked at his internal clock and was surprised to see the date displayed. Holy Shit! Did you realize it is almost Christmas? We literally have a little under two hours before it is the big day?

Derick heard what he swore sounded like a moan one would give to a really slow friend that still hadn’t caught up to the conversation.

“Really?” HAIL asked sarcastically, “if only someone would have quoted a Christmas movie to bring the momentous occasion to our attention.”

Yeah, if only someone had quoted a ‘Christmas’ movie, Derick thought trying to emphasize the word Christmas.

“Look, the original Die Hard movies 1 and 2 were BOTH Christmas movies. I can play them for you.”

No thanks, I don’t like black and white movies.

“They are called noir when they are in black and white. Secondly the first two Die Hard movies were NOT in black and white.”

Yeah, but they were filmed in the 1900s, right? Back before there was even 1080 hp?

“Yes, but that is not the same thing as black and white.”

Might as well be. Oh look at the exit. Derick thought, trying to break HAIL away from his incessant arguments over what happened in the Middle Ages.

Question, is aptitude determined by character statistics?

“It wasn’t the Middle Ages, as that was the time from 1100 to 1453. Secondly no, the professions are unlocked only if you meet the requirements to mentally utilize them. Every player will have at least one available to them, some will be able to unlock multiple variants.”

Quickly splitting the spell power points between psychic-viewing and psychic-telekinesis, bringing their power levels to 9 and 8 respectively. Following that, Derick looted what he swore would be his last corpse in the newbie garden area. After he was finished with the auto look of the dead victim, Derick turned back down the hallway that seemingly let out and upward for miles toward a giant white city built with external wall after external wall for protection. Each wall seemingly wrapped around for miles, before disappearing on the slope of the hill. Finally at the very top of the hill was an enormous castle, complete with a giant ivory tower. At the top of the tower was what appeared to be a glowing purple eye. What is that purple eye thing? Derick asked.

“That purple eye thing, is a transdimensional gate that will take you to the planet Rezura for your life. Also will you please look at the two powers that you have gained?”

  I received powers?

“Well you have killed a total of 18 travelers and given that and the fact that you have a 39% chance of stealing a power it was logically bound to happen.”

Why didn’t I see these earlier?

“You had me minimize all pop-ups, remember?”

Derick sighed to himself as he realized HAIL was correct, but didn’t want to admit it.

I will attempt to walk in a straigh line while reviewing my new powers, please inform me if any blue or red objects appear on my psychic-vision map.

  “Will do, OhmN.”

Derick realized that his AI finally called him by his character name at least, then he realized something that had been nagging at him for quite a while. How did I get the name OhmN? I didn’t chose it, and given the length of names each player generally has to take it seems quite odd that I would be one of the people granted a four letter name.

“You are correct, your original name ‘ApocolypticOmen’ was not accepted due to religious connotations. Instead I reserved a variant I thought you would appreciate, one that would also be approved by the censors, before going live.”

Wait, how long were you reserving this name for me?

“Since the moment you originally uploaded your consciousness to the servers.”

Really? Derick thought as he opened two glowing blue pop-ups detailing the powers he stole through psychic-vampirism.

The first ability Derick received caught him off guard. Ability acquired climbing (passive ability) the owner of this ability is able to scale fences, walls, and mountains with ease. Effect: The owner of this ability will not lose stamina when climbing, up to the user’s body weight and worn gear. Additional points spent in this power will allow the owner to increase their maximum carrying weight by 10 lbs. per point spent.

What type of person would need climbing?

“Outdoor enthusiasts, Army Rangers, thieves wishing to make easy entry or exits from a building, and assassins wishing to strike while a target is sleeping, to name a few.”

  People sleep in this game?

“Every fleshy sleeps. You just haven’t had to deal with that encumbrance as you started off Undead. This means a number of things but first and foremost means that you were on your last life with no way to have an additional respawn available to you. This is important as this is currently day 50 since the launch of these servers, meaning that you are likely the closest traveler to having started with the Undead merit and been able to pay off some or all the flaws associated with the merit.”

A slight pause, as Derick took in all of the new opportunities available to him via the climbing ability. At first glance the climbing ability would appear somewhat useless, but that is only to someone either not playing a rogue class, or someone who didn’t have ill intentions. Does this mean that Taftinator and Gyrospoon7 have to sleep?

“While I am not currently aware of the number of lives available to them, I suffice it to say those two likely purchased extra lives at the start, in addition to the premium package, gear upgrades, item upgrades, etcetera. So more than likely yes, if those two are here they likely have to sleep every eight hours, eat and drink every six hours, unless they wish to incur debuffs.”

Derick smiled a little to himself. He felt his bone jaw extend upward and bow out a little at the thought of all the possibilities his starting status of Undead meant. It was a really good thing I started off Undead.

“It was an even better thing that you purchased the premium package when you did, as this city would have been hostile toward you, versus the friendly status you will now receive.”

  What does that offer me?

“Well now, rather than the guards and villagers attacking you for the bounty on your head, you will be allowed through and only fellow travelers will try to be hostile toward you. I will warn you however, do not attack anyone first, unless you want to deal with any nearby guards.”

  Good to know.

With that Derick checked his second blue glowing pop-up window waiting anxiously for the next ability he would gain at the expense of his fellow traveler. New ability acquired tracking. Synergy Sync* applied, Ability changed to psychic-tracking. In psychic-tracking the player is able to track any person or object that they have come within 50 yards of. Aura effect, costs 5% of the players base mental energy pool. The ability psychic-tracking can be used in conjunction with other aura effects.

Wow, is this how the group of six people found me?

“No Master. It is likely that a few spotters went out offering cash rewards to any Undead traveler who noticed an odd skeleton with powers playing with themselves in a corner.”

Out of curiosity Derick decided to activate his new psychic-tracking ability listing Taftinator as his target. It was almost a relief when Derick saw that both he and Gyrospoon7 were in Argoth. Is Argoth a starting planet?

“Yes, there are five possible starting planets from which to choose: Argoth, Triton, Polairs, Gennymeade, and Drac
o. Each has its own alignment, its own ruling societies and absolutely no way of traveling between the planets once initial starting points have been chosen. Even if you die and are resurrected here, you will always go back to your starting planet.”

  Always?

“Unless you all are able to come up with a way to develop space travel from the resources provided on each planet within the next 77 years, I dare say it is a permanent bind.”

Wow, I hope I don’t get sent to Argoth then. It would be a lot easier to survive without Taftinator and Gyrospoon7 constantly trying to kill me.

“You might want to reconsider that, once you have a second to look at the sealed item that you took from Taftinator.”

Finally after what seemed to be a walk that took days, but really only took a few hours Derick found himself walking through the first wall to the city of the underworld.

  “Merry Christmas Master.”

Yippee Ki Yay. Derick thought as he entered the city and immediately began looking for the nearest profession trainer.

“Oh that was good. Now all you need to do is add the ‘mother fucker’ part at the end, when you are talking to your enemies.”

Don’t I have to worry about language, for fear of getting banned?

“No, those were initial safeguards that were later removed as only persons aged 21 years or older were allowed to upload their conscious for a chance at resurrection. As such the government oversight allowed the access to sex, guns, alcohol, and rock and roll.”
