What? Derick asked mentally while turning around to see the green dot that appeared behind him.
“Congratulations fellow traveler.” The old man said before him. It was now that Derick noticed a discrepancy in what he was viewing.
“You are a human?” Derick asked.
“You are also observant of your surroundings. That will do you well in the coming days.” The old man said.
“I thought only gnomes could use the portals?” Derick asked, his mind quickly trying to remember all of the different concepts and theories that were so obvious a second ago begin to fade like a waking dream.
“No, many can learn to use the portals, but now we have you, one who can create the portals walking the worlds again. This is both a blessing and a curse. Many who are in power now will seek to either control or kill you, knowing that you could be a tool to win wars, diplomatic conflicts, or cause espionage. The universe is now open with multiple possibilities and it is all up to you how the five worlds and the underworld will all proceed from here.” As the man began speaking, Derick could see the purple power that the man once exuded, begin to wane slowly.
“What is happening to you?” Derick asked the old man.
“My time has come to an end. As there is a new portal master, my purpose and the energy that I have been clinging onto to sustain my life force is no longer necessary. I have been leaching energy from the portals so long that only the portal from the underworld to the other planets still exists. It is now up to you if you want to reestablish the old portals between planets or permanently sever the planets from one another entirely. Realize yours is a dangerous road, walk it carefully. With that I give you this, the key linking the different portals together. With this and your own powers, you should be able to travel anywhere.”
Derick took the glowing purple disk from the old man. Instantly the power holding the old man together faded almost entirely, causing the skin and clothing particles of the man to begin to dissolve at an alarming rate.
“I leave you with one last word. If you wish to leave this cave a true portal master, continue your journey onward for you lack the skills required to make or sustain your own personal portals. If you leave here now, it will take you years to learn the knowledge that is still trapped below the depths here. But whatever you do, do not die. You are the last of the celestial portalists. Without you the worlds will forever be closed to each other. In time, even the underworld will become disconnected from the other planets.” With that last warning, the old man completely dissolved into ash that floated out into the air, before being sucked into the crystals lining the walls.
“Well you heard the man, time to get out of here. Good job, profession unlocked, time to save ourselves.”
Derick smiled, that wasn’t what he said at all.
“Master, I know knowledge and power are two key motives for you. Those two motives are obvious from your interactions with the world so far, but seriously let’s take the easy win.”
Easy? You call almost being eaten by psychic spiders easy? How did they not show up on my psychic-viewing anyway?
“My guess is their powers allowed a disruption of your psychic-viewing, causing you not to notice them until they began their mental assaults. That said, your statement proves why we should leave here now. You can always put your spell power points toward increasing your ability, which will allow you to travel freely between planets. If you want, we can go back to the cemetery and kill other travelers for days, if that will make you leave here. I won’t even complain if we go back to yout beloved cemetery for some easy power ups?”
Easy? You think killing Travelers is easy?
“The way you do it, ruthlessly and efficiently, yes. You are a walking natural disaster of death, when you put your mind to killing.”
I thank you for your vote of confidence, but we should see what is available still. I have a feeling that once I leave here, all the treasures of this dungeon will be lost forever, as the portal to the surface is already closing.
“Even more reason to leave now, while we still can. You know that once we leave here and get to a planet you are also bound to level, which means you will have unassigned skill points that you can use to also progress this skill beyond its current limitations.”
And who will teach me to get above the journeyman and master level thresholds, so that i can become a sage of this profession? Can you without a doubt ensure that my skill points will allow me to increase my skills high enough to reach the top tiers of this profession, or are you just using wishful thinking to drive your decisions? Derick asked HAIL angrily.
“No.”
No, what?
“No, I cannot guarantee that your skills will be able to be added to this profession or to the three different profession related skills. Nor can I even assure that adding enough points to your new psychic portal mastery will let you use the profession at a Sage level, even though your skills will technically be at that level. That said, I would like to state for the record that I would still like to leave here.”
You know, you really are a coward at heart. Derick thought to himself as he began crouching and walking slowly forward, constantly checking for traps, hidden objects, monsters, or rooms. Derick knew deep down that this was going to be quite an adventure, whether he survived or not.

Chapter 5
Derick began winding his way under, around and over many of the protruding crystals that created a drunk man’s death chamber. As for Derick, he was fine, only a few of the crystals posed a bit of trouble and even this his newly acquired climbing ability helped make short work of both the obstacle and his stamina. It was after his fifth time waiting on his stamina to return after a particularly involved climb that Derick had a thought of inspiration hit him. He looked at the tunnel system seeing that there seemed to be a clear path right down the middle of the tunnel but that random objects would either cause him to jump over or if he was taller he would need to duck under such an obstacle. That is when Derick had probably his laziest idea for the game yet, he cast levitation power for the first time, and climbed up to the top of the last crystal he had just been on and began to run forward down the tunnel.
As Derick ran he saw a few Malayan mantraps placed just after a particularly steep ascent and seemingly equally steep descent into the trap. With his timer nearing its end, Derick came to a great open chasm, rather than risking his levitation breaking halfway through his run Derick decided to rest a
nd let his levitation cooldown timer reset. While waiting, Derick continued to practice stealth. While Derick knew the skill would not increase if monsters of NPCs were not around he felt it was a good habit to get into and keep up, particularly in a universe as cutthroat as the one in which he found himself currently, which was why Derick was surprised to see a minimized golden pop-up resting just at the periphery of his vision. Derick thinking something was a amiss, he brought up the pop-up menu to see what it said.
Stealth increased to 68.
Derick quickly checked his psychic-vision, all to see that it was still indicating that nothing was around.
Derick quietly began backing his way toward the nearest wall, in order to see if he could find where the hidden monsters were. Derick kept his head on a swivel, quietly looking from right to left, trying to see any signs of movement or of dust not being in a random place, but he didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. It was while he had his head on a swivel that he totally missed the long flat bar that tripped his small legs forcing him to fall to the ground with a clatter as his bones struck sheet metal that was resting on the ground. It took Derick a second to realize that he had fallen over the discarded gear of a fallen warrior.
