  When the Spheres reached ten, Victor’s body convulsed. Lily’s eyes opened as Victor fought for control and a second later, muscles relaxed. Victor sank down into the bed, eyes wide with concern as he looked at his arms and hands.

  Dawn looked up and gave him a small nervous smile. “I’ve never handled such technology before.”

  “Follow my instructions and you should be fine,” Wynn said matter of fact. “Besides, bringing a dagger to a gun fight isn’t the wisest choice. The place could be crawling with Xull sentries so we need to go in well-armed.”

  Victor touched and squeezed Dawn’s shoulder, “You’ll be fine. We will all be here for each other.”

  Dawn nodded, her demeanor relaxing a little bit.

  Victor’s body swayed as he hung on the metal bar, “So, the plan is, we secure the area, hack the lock and inspect the area. If there is some Xull super weapon, we plant explosives and make a run for it?”

  Wynn gave a small nod, “To put it simply, yes. Now that we are on our way, I have to make some alterations to the plan. Lily and Dawn will have to stay in the APC. They do not have nano-shells and will trip the area scans. Right now, the APC’s and each of our nano-shells have an uploaded program to mask us for a while.”

  Lily gave Wynn a hard gaze, “You should have told us beforehand.”

  Wynn’s expression didn’t change as she spoke, “I’m leading this mission and I can change the orders as I see fit.”

  The APC rumbled along as Victor, Lily, and Dawn looked to each other.

  Wynn’s expression softened and she turned he
r head to Lily, “Don’t get me wrong. I want you both in there with us, but this is a stealth mission first. I can’t leave anything to chance.”

  “Anything else you’re keeping from us,” Lily asked with sarcastic edge.

  Wynn looked down to the screens, “If things go sideways, you three are to retreat while the rest of us hold them off. I’ve uploaded instructions on how to drive the APC into Victor’s shell.”

  Victor raised an eyebrow, “It sounds like this is a suicide mission.”

  Wynn tapped at screens. “It is. We all know that whatever is happening at the blackout location could be very dangerous. It could ripple across not only Xull, but the other realms. Miku and I discussed it and it is top priority to shut it down. We know your mission is to bring Vala back and that is what you will do, but we are expendable here in Xull.”

  Anger touched Victor’s voice, “You’re not expendable to us!”

  Wynn raised her small snout and gave Vala’s Blade a gentle smile. “Victor, we are all expendable to higher ideals. Stick to the plan and cross your fingers. I’m not ready to give up, but if objectives change during the mission, follow my orders.”

  “Fuck that. I won’t let it come to that,” Victor said with a hard edge.

  May and Ema glanced back. Wynn sat back in her control seat, letting out a small sigh. Lily and Dawn’s expression mirrored Victor’s.

  Wynn looked Victor in the eye, “I saw you nearly throw your life away on Vala’s mountain when Baaldir attacked with his War Wolves. You punched a god and he was going to murder you for it. You’re not the only one who will make those kinds of decisions. Every day is a battle of life and death. If I could access the area without your help, I would have done it already, but here we are. Vala has a plan, but so do I. We put a stop to Xull’s attempts at enslaving all of us and deal it a black eye it has never seen before. If it goes south, I happily give my life to ensure your safety.”
