We writers like to think that we work in splendid solitude. But every morning when I go to work, other people make the lights go on. When I drive to do research, taxpayers and workers built those roads. When I work safely at home, military and police provide that security. I’m grateful to them all and to so many others.

There are people I want to thank specifically:

Shane Salerno, my friend, fellow scrivener, agent, and partner in crime fiction had the idea to do a volume of novellas in the first place. I’m glad he did, and, as always, I owe him more than I can repay.

Liate Stehlik at William Morrow agreed to publish it, an act of confidence for which I am humbly grateful.

Jennifer Brehl was a wonderful and discerning editor, and Maureen Sugden saved me from many embarrassing errors. Thank you both for your hard, creative work and care.

I owe Brian Murray, Andy LeCount, Sharyn Rosenblum, Kaitlin Harri, Jennifer Hart, Julianna Wojcik, Brian Grogan, Chantal Restivo-Alessi, Ben Steinberg, Frank Albanese, Juliette Shapland, and Nate Lanman debts of gratitude.

And to all the publicity, sales, and marketing folks at HarperCollins/William Morrow, know that I know that without you I would be unemployed.

To Deborah Randall and all the people at The Story Factory, my sincere appreciation.

To my lawyer, Richard Heller, thanks for all the care and hard work.

To Matt Snyder and Joe Cohen at CAA—as always, thanks.

To the people at Kids In Need of Defense, thank you for your help and for everything that you do.

A shout-out to the following people for reasons they will understand: Teressa Palozzi, Drew Goodwin, Right-Click, Colton’s Burgers, Drift Surf, Jim’s Dock, Java Madness, TLC Coffee Roasters, David Nedwidek and Katy Allen, Miss Josephine Gernsheimer, Cameron Pierce Hughes, Tom Russell, Quecho, El Fuego, and Andrew Walsh.

To my mother, Ottis Winslow, for the use of her porch.

Finally, to my wife, Jean, for all her tolerance, enthusiasm, sense of adventure, and love.

  ILYM.
