  Chapter 1

“We have reduced the tumor but we need to remove it.” The doctor told her soberly.

“Will it work?” Allison gripped her hands together as she looked at the man sitting in front of her.

He leaned forward on his desk. “I don’t usually say this to the patient’s family but I know how much you care for your father Allison.” He paused and she waited with trepidation. “Prayer and a lot of it can do no harm.” He smiled at her fleetingly. She was small and extremely attractive with an oval face and long dark hair with a hint of brown. She had flawless cocoa brown complexion and he had never seen her with a hint of makeup on except for the glossy strawberry lip gloss. Her eyes dominated her face! Large and dark brown and reminded him of a full glass of sherry. He had never seen her in anything except scrubs because of her job as a nurse’s aide but he was sure she had a spectacular figure. He really liked her a lot and if he was not married he would be asking her out. “Your father just needs the money for the operation to give him a chance.”

“I will let you know when I win the lottery,” she said with a faint smile. “As you know; Dad is a set of triplets. Aunt Agnes died a few years ago from heart attack and Uncle Andy a year ago when he was hit by a drunken driver. It seems that they are doomed to die pretty young. Dad is only sixty years old.”

“I know the unfortunate story Allison.” Dr. Fairchild said kindly. “I wish the hospital could absorb the cost but you know how it is.”

“I know.” She got to her feet. “Thank you, doctor.”

“You are welcome my dear.” He got to his feet. “Let me know what you decide.”

  “I will.”

He watched her walk out of his office and felt a pang at how vulnerable she looked. With a shake of his head he went back to work.

“Hey there pretty girl!” Abraham Roberts greeted his daughter in pleasure as she came into his room. He was propped up against his pillows with his glasses on and a book in his hands. He looked so cheerful in spite of the gravity of his situation.

“Hi Dad.” She leaned forward and kissed him on his weathered cheek. He had raised her without a mother when his wife died shortly after giving birth to her. Death surrounded him from all directions and yet he still managed to have hope! She wished she could be like him. “What are you reading?”

“A mystery novel by James Patterson. The man sure can write,” his dark brown eyes searched her face curiously. “Tell me the good news.”

  “They can reduce the tumor.”

  “And?”

“You are going to need an operation eventually.”

“We don’t have that kind of money.”

“You always tell me that faith is alive and well. We just have to exercise it.” She reminded him.

“I sure did,” he reached for one of her small hands. She was such a tiny thing and reminded him of her mother. “Baby girl I don’t want to burden you with my health issues. Whatever it is that will happen then so be it.”

“I am not going to lose you Dad.” She told him, her eyes bright with tears. “There has to be some way to come up with the money.”

He lifted her hand and kissed it. His beautiful and determined daughter! She had not finished nursing school because he had taken ill and he regretted that very much! “We will find a way. Now tell me about that patient of yours.”

Allison laughed, relieved that he had changed the subject. For the next twenty minutes, she regaled him with the happenings of her patient, the elderly Daisy Currie and had him laughing. When she left him he was drifting off to sleep.

She kissed his lined forehead and pulled the sheets over him before leaving the room. When she got out to the car park she sat in her old beaten up Nissan and stared into space. She was worried about him. She knew she could accomplish nothing by being worried but she could not help herself. He was all she had left and she wanted him to live to see several more years. He had been such a terrific father! Guiding her in the right way and doing everything with her. His sister had helped to grow her as well and she remembered Aunt Agnes as a cheerful woman who made her laugh. She had braided her thick dark hair when she needed to go to school and had taught her about her period when it was time. Neither of the two siblings her father had; ever had children and she had wondered about that.

She started the car and backed out of the space, pointing it up the hill as she made her way back to work. It will work out! She thought with determination. It must!

Phillip Orlando Anderson the Second strode into the now hushed boardroom and took his seat at the head of the long glass table and gestured for the meeting to begin. His secretary of ten years hurried over to hand him the IPod with the information he required. A coffee cup was at his elbow sending off enticing steam of the rich Brazilian coffee that he drank each morning. A plate of fruits was also there for when he felt the need to eat them. Everything was in place the way he wanted to and he would have it no other way.

“Phillip we were discussing getting ri
d of the hotel downtown. It is getting run down and the occupancy rate has dropped drastically,” Jerome Manning a thinning hair board member said quickly. He regretted opening his mouth as the man’s cold grey eyes swiveled to him.

“That was the first hotel my father acquired. We are not getting rid of it.” He said coldly as he sipped his coffee. He looked at his secretary and nodded and she read him correctly. She handed him her report and he scanned it quickly. “Thank you.”

“A renovation team is in place. It is now April. We should have the hotel fixed up and ready for a grand opening in December. The Anderson is a bit outdated and redundant so I suggest we go with another name. Downtown is striving now so we should take advantage of that. Make the hotel more family friendly and beat out the competition.”

The men stared at him for a moment and nodded. At twenty-nine he was the youngest one there and the one in charge. He was sharp and clinical about his decisions and never allowed his emotions to come into play when doing business. It was rumored that he did not even have emotions at all!

“Anything else?” he looked around the room.

The stores uptown are taking a beating in profits.” Another member ventured.

“Drop the prices.” He said impatiently. He turned to his secretary. “Maura get the PR department on the line and I will speak to them as soon as I am finished here.”

  “Yes, sir.”

“We are in an economy where people are finding it hard to make two ends meet. I looked online at some of the prices for the products and I cringed. The store is situated in the heart of uptown and should be doing very well. Monique Romano plans to set up a display corner at the front of the store. Get her on the line as soon as we are through.”

  ******

Phillip sat around his massive desk and booted up his computer immediately. The intercom buzzed and he pressed the button impatiently. “Lionel from the PR department is on the line.”

  “Put him through.”

  “Phillip I-“

“Your department has work to do. I just sent you an email. Come up with some ideas and let me have it no later than this afternoon.”

  “Yes, sir.” He said immediately.

Phillip hung up the phone and continued what he was doing. His intercom buzzed again. “Maura, no more calls.” He barked.

“Your mother insists on talking to you Phillip.”

  “Put her through.”

“Mother, this is not the time.”

“I just wanted to let you know about the dinner plans for this evening.” Paulette Anderson said in her cool cultured voice. “The former first lady will be there so I expect you to be in attendance.”

He bit off an impatient sigh. “What time?”

“Eight. I am sure you can tear yourself away from the office to be there, Phillip.”

“Okay.” He said abruptly. “I will be there.”

“You are going to drive yourself crazy with this honey,” her next door neighbor and friend Elena said to her as she put the salad bowl onto the table in front of them and then joined her. They were on the porch of her house and Allison was grateful for the meal as she had just come straight from work. She had just put away her pocketbook and her laptop and came straight over. Stop thinking about it so much.”

“I cannot help it Elena,” Allison forked out the salad and put it with the fried chicken the woman had made. The smell was so enticing that she felt her mouth watering! ‘He has always been there for me throughout my life and I feel helpless knowing that I cannot do anything for him now that he needs me.”

Elena poured some lemonade and handed it to her friend. She had been friends and neighbors with them since she had moved next door to them ten years ago. She was divorced and without a child and was happy for the company. “I am sure something will happen when the time comes. Did I tell you how I ended up here?”

Allison shook her head. “George and I lived in New York when we first married and at first we were so happy. We were young and in love and the sky was the limit! Three years into the marriage I found out that he was cheating on me. I sat with his shirt in my hands and I cried for about an hour! I had no idea what to do. This man whom I had given my all to was seeking satisfaction with another woman. I washed the clothes and folded them neatly and then I made dinner — I think it was fettuccine Alfredo, his favorite and I waited for him to come home. I waited until he had filled his belly with the delicious food and then I used a frying pan and hit him on the head.”

Allison stared at her friend in shock.

Elena laughed at her expression. “He was out like a light and I used a cold compress on his forehead to wake him up. When he opened his eyes he was pretty mad and we started screaming at each other and then we made love right there on the dining room floor. I am a Spanish girl honey so the passion is always there. We made up after that but he kept on cheating and I had to leave. He told me that I was not able to give him children so he had to seek pleasure elsewhere.”

“Do you still love him?” Allison asked fascinated by the story.

“A part of me still does but I would never want to put myself through that again.”

  “Does he now have children?”

Elena nodded with a whimsical smile. “Two. He is married and still cheating, the bastard.”

Allison laughed at that. “Thank you.”

  “For what?”

“For making me forget my worries.”

“That’s what friends are for honey, “she reached forward and patted the girl’s hands. “It will work out.” She reassured her.

  ******

Phillip paced the length of his sitting room, his hand clutching the whiskey he had poured. He had always been careful and clinical about everything he did. He took women to bed selectively without emotions surfacing. He was considered to be cold and uncaring and he relished the reputation. He was twenty-nine years old and needed heirs; not one but two or even more. He had been thinking about this for the past several months and had come up with an idea. He knew he was going to have to be very discreet about it and be careful about the selection. The women he sees briefly did not fit the profile and he wanted to make the best choice. He walked over to his desk and stared down at the ad. He was going to give it to his secretary in the morning and he knew her loyalty to him would mean that she would never say a word to anyone about it. He needed children and he was determined to have them. He wanted women who had twins, triplets or quadruplets in their lines and preferably an African American woman. He was a member of the Elite Club and he had seen his associates’ children. It had started last month when they had a family day at the club. He had stared at Walter’s quadruplets and the twins Leesa and Brad had produced. Not to mention Scott and Kadine’s triplets. They were beautiful and fascinating to look at and that was when the idea had come to him. He had not said anything to anyone and he had no intention of doing so because he was a very private person. He swallowed down the liquid and grimaced as it hit the lining of his stomach. He also had every intention of doing it the old fashioned way!

“I don’t want to take any more pills,” Daisy said petulantly as Allison came towards her with the pill holders. “I am sick of those damn things.”

“Now Daisy you know you have to take them. Your daughter threatened to put you in a nursing home if you start to give trouble.”

“That cold bitch!” Daisy said with a snort.

“You know she is only looking out for you,” Allison said trying not to laugh. She handed the woman the glass and the pills and made sure she swallowed them. “Now that was not so bad was it?”

“Easy for you to say,” the woman grumbled. “You are young and beautiful and strong and have no need to take these poisons. I swear that these craps do more harm than good.” Her watery blue eyes peered at the girl. “You okay?”

“I am fine.” Allison said with her usual smile.

“You always have a smile on that pretty
face of yours. I know you have that issue with your dad but you still smile and go about your work just the same. The girl I had before was such a plain old sour puss!” the woman snorted. “She had more problems than a single mother with ten kids and walked around with her face to the ground. All that negative energy sucked the life out of me! No wonder I am sick!”

“Maybe it also has to do with the fact that you are suffering a stroke,” Allison said mildly as she pulled the blanket over the woman’s skinny legs. Daisy was a dear but she could be difficult at times.

“That too,” she said with a cackle. “How about a game of gin rummy?”

“No cheating this time.” Allison warned her.

“Me cheat?” she scoffed with a glint in her eyes.

Maura stared at the ad and made a supreme effort on schooling her expression. She knew if her boss thought that she was showing one ounce of curiosity that he would cut her out of it and let someone else handled it but it was hard not to look shocked. “Does the wording sound right?” he asked her calmly, his grey eyes looking at her.

She read the ad again and nodded. “Yes, sir.”

“No names. Just a number that you will generate for them to call. I would like you to weed out the undesirables and I will let you know where they will go for the interview.” He said briskly.

“What exactly are you looking for?” she dared to ask.

He stared at her for a moment and then leaned back against his chair, his expression thoughtful. “She has to be very attractive and smart of course. I am going to need to see a detailed report on her education. She does not have to have a degree but good sense and be compassionate.” His eyes met hers. “She also has to understand that this will never be a relationship but she will only be the mother of the children. She will be compensated and will be allowed to have a relationship with them.”

Maura struggled with that but kept her thoughts to herself. She was sure the man would not appreciate her voicing what she was thinking! “Of course.”
