Stray Cat Blues

Poe offered me money for Frankie. I turned him down.
Angelique was at the meeting, too, but she didn’t say a word to me.
A couple of weeks back, there’d been a story in the paper about a gang shooting in the Mission. Two gang members had been caught in the crossfire during some kind of a dustup. A drug deal gone wrong.
The two men, Vince and Scooter, had been killed.
The police were trying to get to the bottom of it and had arrested a couple of suspects, but the whole affair was murky. There was some mention of the Blue Notes and their activities, but I’d seen no follow up to the story.
I’d thought about Frankie a lot over the past few weeks. One of the hardest things I’d ever had to do was tell her that her sister was dead. It was a good thing I had Alexandra to help. She’d been a champ with the grieving girl since then.
Alexandra returned to our table and sat beside me. She’d been down to visit Frankie in the basement, where Bo had set up a special area for the kids, including a large inflatable bouncer and a magician—a friend of ours, another ex-rock and roll musician trying to go semi-legit.
She leaned over and gave me a big kiss on the lips. When she pulled away, her eyes were dancing and intense. “I love her, Max.”
“Yes, I know.”
“If they can’t find any other relatives, I want to adopt her.”
I nodded.
“Will you help me?” she asked, and put her hand on my knee.
Before I could answer, Jen grabbed my hands and pulled me to my feet. “It’s your turn, Uncle Max,” she cried and dragged me onto the dance floor.
