  She stared at me. She was beautiful, her skin was perfect, glowing, and her hair was like golden silk flowing over her bronzed shoulders. I swallowed. I'd never seen such beauty.

  'But,' she continued, 'some things were within your power. You had plenty of time to bond with all of your Protectors. This was made absolutely clear, was it not?'

  I nodded. It was.

  'Why had you not done this?' She asked, simply.

  'I - um - I,'

  What could I say? That I listened to the childish voice from the veil? Believed a demon, or whatever it was?

  'It was Lilith, tricking you,' Racheal said, 'she seems very good at it.'

  Bollocks. She was listening to my thoughts again. Think nice things, think nice things.

  'So, you didn't believe the Protectors wanted you? That they were reluctant. Tough. Too bad. It's their job. They are lucky to be allowed to bond with the Ancient One.'

  I heard uncomfortable shuffling and a cough from behind.

  'And I happen to know, Maeve Pendle, that they all do want you. They want you very much.'

  Racheal smiled at me, she took my breath away.

  'Will you accept and bond with your protectors?'

  I nodded, 'Yes I will.'

  Then I have a quest for you. Succeed, and it will lead you to Levi.
