  She checked her watch. “Doctor, should I have another nurse make my rounds?”

  “I think we’re good here,” he replied with a nod. “I’m going to perform a few tests and then we’ll get you down for a CAT scan. All right?”

  Noah nodded.

  “You’re in good hands,” she told Noah, walking toward the door.

  “You sure are,” Dr. Noble agreed. “Dee is one of the best nurses in the building.”

  She smirked at the doctor, gave her silent, observant patient a wave and headed back to the wing she was in charge of. Checking in with the other patients, Damaris was efficient and friendly, giving them her undivided attention as best she could. But much as Noah seemed to be experiencing, and as the doctor described, her call and response weren’t keeping the same tune. Her body went from room to room performing as needed. A part of her mind, however, remained back in the room with the accident victim who possessed a steely demeanor in the face of crisis, and a pair of intensely beautiful eyes.
