Masks Page 4

by Tatiana Ruiz

The man felt a pungent pain in his chest. The girl’s words hurt him beyond reason, even though pride stopped him from showing it in front of his servants. He raised his right hand, waving it to show he did not care.

  — If that is what you want... This house would be yours when you married. Since you will never marry I could not leave it to you. But seeing you have now turned it into a den of debauchery, it is yours! From you I do not even want your name. I don’t want you to even look at me, if you see me in town, lower your eyes. You are no longer worthy of the name Emrich or anything else that comes from me. I will leave this place today, since there is no more place for decency here! - after saying that he addressed his servants, while still looking at his daughter – Let us leave. And do not dare to even look at that woman. She is not even worth your pity!

Lucélia saw them turn their backs and leave, one by one, and ran to Halaesia, that was still on the ground over a pool of blood.

  — I will take care of you.

She took her to the tree and hugged her, caressing her face, while she watched everyone who one day loved and respected her take their things and leave. One by one the chests and bags piled on the garden, always at a safe distance from them. No one dared to get close. Everyone ran in order not to get on the Count’s bad side.

She could not say how many hours passed there. Halaesia laid on Lucélia’s lap, with this one caressing her, observing the movement around the house. Walking fast the man approached both of them. Hope grew in Lucélia’s heart. He could have repented...

  — This is your last chance. Come with me and forget this silliness or stay to die, for from my hand you wont get a dime.

The girl breathed deeply and did not move an inch. The head of the one she once called father fell, and she could swear she saw a tear. She sorrowfully watched all the servants and maids leave the house, never to return. Her heart ached, corroded by sadness, but she knew it would pass. She was with her love and soon all else would be nothing. And that is how they followed their paths. Father and daughter... No regrets... The world as it was known, in its prefect frame, broke then. She said goodbye to a past she never seemed to have belonged, hugged the present that softly smiled at her, a vivid glow in it’s eyes announcing it was only the beginning.
