He then made a deal with the scientists to agree to John’s request to borrow the luring machine, helping John to get stronger still.

Telling his father, the late king, about the clause in the agreement with the first Sider of East Kingdom. Making it seems like the North Kingdom could rule the world in a few years, convincing the king that he needed to get the Sider to act on his behalf.

King Henry sat there, and started laughing. It cost him most of his personal wealth and years of planning, but he had successfully used the Sider. As long as he wasn’t found out, it was all worth it.

Many years later, in the history books of North Kingdom, there were two places it mentioned the legendary Sider known as John.

Date: Day: xx Month: xx Year: 90,14

Sider John helped field test a machine (Now known as Lure II) to lure beasts which eventually lead to the extermination of beasts across the globe.

During the field test, Sider John and his party were attacked by a beast called Komodo Dragon, Rank SSS (page 503 of the beasts' history encyclopedia). Facing the beast, he told all party members to run and then charged forward.

The fight lasted for hours, and John eventually killed the Dragon, earning his place as the youngest SSS Rank adventurer ever recorded. He later tested Lure II by himself and made all beasts S class or stronger in the Kingdom of the North extinct within two years. This was pieced together by the test results John had given to Dr Mandy, inventor of lure machines.

Date: Day: xx Month: xx Year: 90,16

Sider John, now the youngest SSS rank in history, held up the East Kingdoms Sider's agreement (page 1 of Technology History encyclopedia). When Kingdom of the West had led an army of 813,200 to invade Kingdom of the North, John went to face the army alone.

Warning them, he shouted that they were innocent in his eyes and were only following orders. He gave them a chance to turn back, and over 100,000 soldiers took that chance. They have recorded statements that they'll be forever grateful to him.

He eventually killed 711,503 people in total; this is the first war the kingdoms had ever fought—the shortest, too. (This has been the story the soldiers who turned back have told.)

John wasn't sure where he should go inside the immortals' area, so he started going directly South from the capital. He killed any SSS ranked monsters that attacked him along the way.

A few weeks later, he found a small village which was at the very bottom of a mountain. The village was tiny. While John was walking towards it, he could see the whole thing. There must have only been roughly eighty houses and nothing else. There weren’t even any fences or walls around it.

John thought an immortal guardian or something similar would be here to keep any SSS Rank monsters from attacking the village. He hadn't been attacked by any of the monsters for a while now. He eventually reached the village and stood outside, not daring to be an uninvited guest.

After a few silent minutes, an old woman came to him. She had grey hair that went down to her shoulders, and she was using a walking stick. Across her slightly hunched back, she wore a Daoist robe. The robes reached down to about eight inches off the floor. Its inner robe was dark blue, while the outer robes were a pristine and shining white.

"Hello, young man. Can I help you?" She smiled warmly at John.

  John smiled back.

"Hello, I'm wondering where to go to be tested for the Life Power. I'm not twenty-one yet, but I'm kind of in a situation, because I don't know when I will turn 21. I was thinking of staying somewhere close by until then."

"To be tested, you need to use the Age Test Crystal,” the old woman spoke with a fluid certainty. “It only lights up if you touch it on your twenty-first birthday. Since you don't know the date, you can work in the village until it lights up. That's the only way."

This arrangement was suitable for John.

"Thank you, ma’am. I'll work around the village. In return, I only ask for a place to sleep,” With the agreement out in the open, John’s eyes lit up. “Where should I work? Farming? Hunting? Or something else?"

"Haha, you're eager, aren't you?” Her laugh was oak-like and textured; a welcoming sound. “Have you ever gone hunting? Have you farmed?"

"I've hunted for food for almost six years now, but farming I have never practised."

"Very well, let's get you to help with the farming then. It’s always nice to learn something new, isn’t it?" With that she turned around and walked into the village. John followed behind her.

They came to a house at the east side of the village, where the woman introduced the farmers to John.

John was going to be sleeping in their home in exchange for the manual labour. Every day he was allowed to touch the Age Tests Crystal inside the town temple at the heart of the village.

The woman explained that when the crystal activated, it would insert a small amount of Life Power inside the brain, which will mutate the very centre neuron. This neuron spread the power to the others, making them able to store the Life Power. That was the only natural way to step onto the road of immortality.

One could attempt to force the process, as well. For this taboo ritual, someone who already had Life Power would proceed to plant some inside another person’s brain forcefully. However, without perfect control to reach the centre neuron, the likelihood of death is around 99%.

Only those who could make it here using their skills and will to survive-- only they were allowed inside the village.

Everyone here was an immortal to some extent. Whether at the first steps of their journey, or far along the road, they all shared this power. The villagers shunned outsiders, though there were few who could make it there. Without the approval of the leader of the village, the old woman, the villagers could almost be described as hostile.

The woman in question was known as Amanda. She was the strongest immortal in this village. So long as she was within the gates, monsters didn't dare come within five miles of the area.

The immortals on this planet were the ones who created the four kingdoms on this world, the four kings who sat on the thrones were initially just puppets. Immortals could not be bothered with mortals, which also explained the simplicity of their namesakes, too. The immortals set up the kingdoms in this fashion to get resources from mortals all around the world. Every so often, they would take in talent from them, as well.

John thanked Amanda for the information and for welcoming him among her people.

He grabbed some farming tools and went with the farmer for his first lesson.

In the months that followed, John ploughed fields, helped remove tree stumps, planted seeds, watered them, built scarecrows and did anything else that was asked of him. When he wasn't farming, he was helping other people chop wood, wash clothes and many other miscellaneous jobs.

Every day, he'd go to the crystal to touch it. Every day, he returned with no change. He did not lose hope; however, he continued each and every day with this ritual. Finally, the day came.

He touched the crystal, and it lit up.

  ‘Ding!’

  Afterword I

Hello! I’m thankful for your purchase, I hope you enjoyed reading this first issue of The Idle System

I hope you liked the story as it’s my first novel. I tried to make the system like an idle game, and at the beginning you would need to watch over it often. As the story progressed, John wouldn’t need to check on it as much as could let the system run in the background.

I also tried to make the character develop tunnel vision towards the immortality goal. He didn’t want to make friends or get to know any mortals unless he failed to become an immortal since they would die of old age long before him. John believed this because of the novels he read in his past life, but his past plays a big part of it. His past life and a lot of questions will be answered in volume 2, so please be patient for the release.

Like most people today, I play a lot of games. I’ve played around 25-30 different types of idle games alone. When I was reading other novels about cultivation and because I’m lazy by nature, my mind thought of a scenario of me going to a cultivation world with one thought in mind, “If only I could go through life with an idle game.”

This novel is the complete opposite of what I thought would happen if that came true.

If you think John had it hard in the beginning of the mortal world, the cultivation world is thousands of times more dangerous.

As you might have realised, this book is part of a series. If you enjoyed it enough and would like to receive notifications when the next book gets released, go to the link below. It will take you to and email subscription form.

  2.0

  That’s when the pain started.

It flooded John’s senses in a thorny rush, searing through his body like acid. The Life Power surged through his brain cells, mutating and evolving each of them by the thousands. As seconds passed, the pressure in John’s skull increased. It was only a matter of time before he could no longer help but cry out in pain, clutching his head and dropping onto the floor. His body writhed and twisted as his voice was lost to the ringing in his ears.

All around him, a crowd of villagers gathered. They watched with sympathy and familiarity as John was subjected to the pain. They, too, had gone through the very same trial. It was a necessary step to becoming an immortal.

Almost an hour later, the pain ebbed. John lay on the floor, throat raw and voice almost completely depleted. He was wiped out both mentally and physically, body trembling as he gasped for air. As the pain faded away, he continued to lay on the floor with his eyes squeezed shut.

  John opened the system.

Welcome to the Idle System 2.0

Where did my Time Pool go!? John jolted upon reading through the system. He tried to sit up but found his body was still trying to recover. And my Skill points!? System, what the hell?!

Still cursing the system, he checked out the new skills and his Life Pool.

  Life Pool:

The accumulated units of Life Power stored in user’s brain.

  Absorption Speed:

Beginner: Take the Life Power from Life Sources at a rate of 1, 2 or 3 units per minute.

Advanced: Take the Life Power from Life Sources at a rate of 4, 5 or 6 units per minute.

Peak: Take the Life Power from Life Sources at a rate of 7, 8 or 9 units per minute.

Bonus for maxing all skill levels: Adds 1 unit per minute speed.

  Purifier:

Impurities: Removes anything from the Life Power that is not useful to the user.

Compact: Takes Life Power and compresses it.

Speed: Speed of Impurities skill is 2x, 3x or 5x faster.

Bonus for maxing all skill levels: Can absorb any Life Power and will transform into available Life Pool units.

John put all Idlers into Purifier’s Impurities first. The timer came up as 24d 21h 40m. If he killed creatures again, would he gain Life Pool units? How did that work, exactly? John furrowed his brows as a wave of frustration washed over him.

It was then that Amanda, in her flowing white robes, approached him. The older woman stood not far from where John was lying down. She smiled down at him
and said, “Congratulations on taking your first step onto the road of immortality.”

“Thank... you.” John forced his heavy eyelids open and looked up at Amanda. His voice was still frail and came out shakily and barely audible.

Amanda kneeled down and placed her wrinkled, warm hand onto his chest. With a start, John could feel something entering his body from Amanda’s palm.

  Life Power detected.

  Absorbing…

John closed his eyes again and felt a wave of calmness ripple through his body. The Life Power was travelling from Amanda’s hand through his chest and into his bloodstream. Goosebumps crept up and down John’s spine, and he felt the power making its way into his brain where it vanished.

“This Life Power of mine will convert into your Life Power. It usually heals and strengthens your body as a whole,” Amanda’s eyes twinkled as she spoke, “but I can tell your body is already in peak condition. You will have an advantage compared to most other immortals. Once you have recovered from the trial, the Life Power will go uninterrupted throughout the blood system, and you will be able to store it within you.”

It was as Amanda said. After a few minutes, John felt completely refreshed. He stood up and did some light movements, finding his body fully recovered.

“Wow, that healed me so quickly.” John was stunned at the speed of the Life Power healing.

Amanda nodded. “It’s mainly because of your body’s condition. Most people who turn twenty-one are all fit, healthy, and strong, but they are unlike you who have managed to get to the peak condition. While they can still get their bodies to improve after that age, they miss out on the perks.”

“What kind of perks?” The System’s Rank SSS must be the peak she was on about.

“The main perk is faster absorption and usage of Life Power. Of course, this is only a temporary leg-up.” Amanda’s gaze hardened. “The others will eventually catch up to your cultivation level when you’re at higher ranked levels. You’ll have about a hundred years before you reach that point. You’ll also have fewer impurities inside your body, so Life Power will cycle through your body much faster too.”

John nodded at the explanation. Will the remaining impurities inside my body be forced out? My Stomach Acid and Impurity Filter skills have prevented any impurities from entering my body since acquiring them, but what about before that? This body could not be free from impurities prior to my coming to this world, right?
