  He crossed the kitchen, and cracked the door to the living room. He motioned for me to join him, and I peeked through. Mother leaned forward earnestly. Her fingers flew, creating an unending crochet chain. Friends and family listened in rapt attention as she spoke.

  “This story reminds me of the maid. Oh, my, it was a wicked thing for her to do… You see, it began with a murder.”
