“Yeah, I got four more hours left on my shift.” Tiffany replied, pulling her foot back and kicking Nate again just for good measure.

“I’ll explain everything when you get off.” Zeke said, grabbing Nate’s wrist and lifting him up over his shoulder as the driver of the truck got out and hurried around to the side to open the other door. Tiffany realized that the vehicle wasn’t so much a truck as it was a large cargo van type of vehicle. The side door slid open loudly before Zeke dumped Nathan’s body inside and slammed the door shut again before he stalked back up to her, his hands cupping either side of her face as he looked her over in the darkness. “I’m just happy we got here in time.” Kissing the top of her head, he pulled her body in close to his. Tiffany didn’t realize how scared she’d been until she felt his solid frame holding her and she wrapped her arms around his midsection.

“You knew he’d try something?” Tiffany asked, lifting her head up to look at him, though she couldn’t tell too much of his features where they were standing.

“I had a hunch that he might, but it was more complicated than that.” Zeke pulled away and took his phone out of his pocket. “I tried to call you six times, but you never answered.” He explained.

“I can’t answer my phone when I am on the sales floor and I never had to go pee.” Tiffany said, feeling bad and then suddenly realizing. “My phone! It’s out in the parking lot near my car. Come walk with me to get it and tell me as much as you can.” It was still her lunch break after all, she had thirty minutes.

“Nathan beat up Mel. They knew each other when Nate was working security at the club, used to go by the name of Axel, that’s why no one realized who he was until Mel woke up and started talking. As soon as Josh found out, he called me. My guys went to his place and got our truck back, all the product was still in it, I figure Nate thought Mel was dead and we’d have no idea where to find the truck. He was probably planning on selling it, but when he got fired from the bonds office, he decided to come after you for revenge too.” Zeke said, explaining as much of the night's events as he could as they walked back down the parking lot to pick up Tiffany’s phone.

“I knew I had a bad feeling about him when he threatened me earlier today, I just didn’t think he’d be stupid enough to actually try to do something, I thought maybe Gene and Margaret were right, he was full of hot air.” Tiffany said, tossing away the spilled drink she’d bought and throwing out her sandwich with it. She just didn’t have any appetite now.

“I was planning on keeping an eye on you tonight anyway, just in case, but when Josh called me, I came straight here with one of my guys.” Zeke nodded towards the van that was finding a parking place not far from where Tiffany’s car was parked.

“What are you going to do with him?” Tiffany asked, unsure of whether she would like the answer.

Zeke looked at the driver in the van about the same time that Tiffany turned to look at him as well, he was dressed all in black, wearing a beanie over his head.

“We’ll find someplace to put him.” Zeke replied darkly. Pulling Tiffany to his side, he leaned down, kissing the top of her head again as he looked at the driver in the van giving Zeke a brief nod before he backed out of the parking space and the large vehicle lumbered through the parking lot.

As Zeke walked her back into the store, Tiffany clocked back in for the rest of her shift, knowing Zeke would be waiting for her when she walked out the store tonight and possibly all of the foreseeable nights in the future for as long as she would have him.

  Two Weeks Later

Tiffany took a deep breath as she stood inside of her bathroom, Brody sat just outside the door, watching her curiously as she studied something that had been carefully placed on the edge of her sink. For the umpteenth time, she looked at her phone, then she studied the directions on the box she held in her hands, before her honeyed eyes shifted back to the instrument sitting on the ledge.

Laying in the waste basket, there were three other boxes like the one she was now looking at. Sniffing, she swayed back and forth doing a little dance before the timer on her phone made her jump and shout as she fumbled putting the box down to pick up her phone and turn off the timer for the fourth time today.

Picking up the tester, Tiffany lifted it up in front of her face and looked at it, two little pink lines staring her in the face.

Looking up at her reflection in the mirror, her eyes wide. “I’m pregnant.”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Growing up in the deep south I was taught some precious life lessons; you should always answer with Ma’am or Sir, tea that isn’t sweet is blasphemy, and that you catch a lot more flies with sugar than you do with vinegar.

I was born in Forth Smith, Arkansas but I was raised in the small town of Marion, Arkansas a short fifteen-minute drive from Memphis, Tennessee the birthplace of rock and roll and currently live in Mississippi. While it may not seem like an accomplishment to some, I am proud to say that I was a published author before the age of thirty and I have many more books left in my head to share with the world.

When I am not writing, I’m thinking about writing and driving friends and family crazy with the latest concoction that my brain has come up with as well as spoiling my cat Boo who at some point, will make a cameo in an upcoming novel that has been sitting in my work in progress folder for two years.
