  Acknowledgments

  To My Family

Without your support, I would not have made it. Thank you to my mother, who is willing to support me no matter religious beliefs or others’ negative opinions on what I choose to use my gift and talent for. Thank you to my husband who's always been there for me and supporting me. Thank you for staying up with me all night when I was writing and editing. You’re the real MVP. Thank you to my big sister Kalin and my little brother Cartier who keep me motivated and always let me know that I’m great at what I do.

  King Adonis

I struggled to open my eyes as I awakened from what seemed like a long nap. My vision was blurry as hell, but I managed to make out the room I was in. I was back in Droga, in my bed. My arms and chest were hooked up to a few machines that were annoyingly beeping beside me. I tried to sit up, but that shit hurt.

  “Mmmm,” I groaned.

“Adonis!” Bella’s voice spoke to the left of me. She was laying down in the day bed next to the terrace window. Her skin glowed underneath the sun as she rushed over to me. “Your awake!” she cried, searching my body.

“How long was I sleep?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. I think about twenty-one days, nine hours and thirty-six minutes,” she answered. I glanced at her weirdly. “I was worried about you. This was all my fault,” she cried in her hands.

“Love what’s all your fault? Me sleeping entirely too long? I’m a fucking King. I probably was tired as hell. I’m sure I needed the rest so don’t blame yourself for-”

“Your dumb ass didn’t over sleep,” Amir chimed in from the other side of me. I didn’t even notice him and the other in the room either.

“Nigga I’ve been sleep for three weeks. How the fuck is that not oversleeping?” I shot back.

“Miss I can’t aim for shit here, shot you,” Twan chimed in, pointing to Bella.

  “You shot me!” I barked.

“Adonis it was an accident. I’m so sorry.”

“How the fuck do you shoot somebody by accident Bella?”

“It was a lot going on and it wasn’t all my fault. You all kept moving and I couldn’t get a clear shot. I was scared and y’all didn’t make it any better by yelling at me. I got nervous and my hand was shaking. Next thing I know, the gun went off and you hit the floor. There was blood everywhere and I couldn’t think. Baby I’m sorry,” she sobbed, holding my hand in hers.

For the life of me, I couldn’t remember the events she was talking about. All I remember is coming to save her and then getting caught. Everything after that was all a blur.

“You lucky he loves your ass because the council was ready to behead you. They knew that it would kill Adonis, so they decided to turn the other cheek,” Amir let me know.

“Couldn’t have been me. You shoot me and you’re as good as dead,” Twan added.

“Wow, Twan. So, you telling me if Zara shoots you then you gone kill her?” Leah asked.

“Kill? Not at all. I’m murdering her ass. Straight up no chaser. I don’t care how much I like her or how good the pussy is. She got to go.” He shook his head.

Tuning them out, I turned my attention to Bella who was still crying like a baby. “Bella stop fucking crying. I’m good. Look at me. I’m still here and I’m still breathing. You didn’t do much damage if I’m up and talking.”

The room got silent. I noticed everyone adverting their eyes from me. I could tell they had something to tell me, but no one wanted to. “What? What is it? Did she shoot a nigga in his dick or something? I know I’m not paralyzed because I can feel both my legs-” I paused. I could only feel one of my legs. I started patting down my body.

“Now, Adonis don’t panic,” Leah warned.

“Yea, Don just be cool.” Twan eased towards me.

I kept feeling down my left leg until I couldn’t feel any more. Yanking back the covers, I saw the reason why I couldn’t feel half of my leg. It was because half of it was gone. “What the fuck! What happened to my fucking leg! Where is the other half of my fucking leg!” I snapped.

“Adonis, I’m so sorry. There was nothing the doctor could do. It got infected after I shot you and they had to cut it off,” Bella blurted.

“You did this to me! Baby why the fuck would you do this to me? I tried saving your ass and this is what you do to me? You shoot me and then take my fucking leg!” I roared with so much rage that I nearly scared my own self.

“Adonis I’m sorry!” she cried again.

“Get the fuck out!” I barked.

  “But, Adonis-”

“Everybody get the fuck out! Now! That’s a fucking order!” I shouted. With the quickness everyone scurried out the door. Bella took her sweet ass time leaving. She turned towards me and started to say something, but I held up my hand to stop her from speaking. “Get out Bella!”

Startling her with the bass of my voice, she jumped and rushed out the room. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt Bella, but what she did to me pained me. Looking down at my thigh, I saw the nub that replaced my leg. It was cut off right where my knee would have been. I couldn’t stop staring at it. I wanted to pinch myself and make sure this shit wasn’t a nightmare. My leg couldn’t have been cut off.

A knock pried me from what I hoped was my own delusion. “Go away!” I barked.

“Adonis, it’s me. Your mother. Can I come in please?” Estella quizzed behind the closed door.

“No. Go away!” I barked again.

Apparently, she was hard of hearing because instead of going away, she welcomed herself inside.

  “Mother I said go away-”

“Oh, dear son I heard what you said. I made the decision to ignore you.” She smiled before pulling up a chair next to my bed. “Would you like to have the floor before I go on my motherly rant about this situation?” She was so graceful when she spoke that even if she was upset, I wouldn’t be able to tell.

  “I don’t have a fucking leg,” I mumbled.

“I can see that. It was a very hard decision for Bella to make.”

My eyes sharply cut at her. “Bella made the decision to cut my leg off? I thought the doctor decided that.”

“Well, he suggested it. When Bella shot you, she hit your bone and the bullet got stuck. The doctor didn’t have the tools to do emergency surgery right then and there, so we had to ship you back home to do it. You were already passed out due to losing a lot of blood. The doctor kept medication in your system for the pain which is why you’ve been sleep for about three weeks. Halfway through the trip, the doctor noticed that your leg was getting infected. Badly,” she emphasized.

  “He told ev
eryone that either he could risk your life to try and save your leg or he could amputate it,” she continued.

“So, Bella’s ass thought it was a good idea to cut my shit!”

“Adonis, she wasn’t trying to risk you dying. The doctor said you had a low chance in surviving if he tried to save your leg. He admitted that you would definitely live if he amputated it,” she explained.

“Why didn’t anyone else speak up? It’s my fucking leg!”

“Son, it was a matter of life and death. Bella had no choice,” she defended.

“She had no right to do that shit! How could she even make that decision? She’s not my wife. That decision should have been made by you or Amir.”

“I was not in attendance son and Amir is too young to make a life or death decision. The council granted Bella permission to make that decision. Since King Enzo is missing, and the marriage wasn’t properly sealed with a ceremony before a minister, it was annulled. The papers were signed, and Bella is now yours. She’s your wife.” She smiled.

I know that in my heart I was elated as shit, but I couldn’t show it. I was still very angry with the fact that she made the decision to cut my leg off instead of fighting for my life. It was weak as fuck to me. I was not a man with one leg. How was I going to walk? How was I going to run my country with only one leg? How was I going to stand before my people and declare anything with one leg? It was impossible in my eyes.

“I know what you’re thinking Adonis and-”

“Oh, you read minds now?” I rudely spat.

“I’m going to ignore that because I understand you’re going through something right now. While you’re going through this, try not to forget that I’m still your mother,” she ended with her famous smile. “Now that we have that all cleared up, I want you to do something for me. Well, I need you to do something for me.”

“If the shit got to do with walking, running, standing, or taking a knee, I can’t do it. I don’t have a fucking leg!” I spat.

“Stop whining, Adonis. You’re a King not a toddler. You have one good leg and you’ll learn to walk with a prosthetic leg. What I need for you to do is take it a little easy on Bella.”

Again, I cut my eyes at her as if what she said didn’t make sense. To me, what she said didn’t make sense. “You want me to let up on the woman who shot me and took away my leg? I’m here right now because of her.”

“I find it funny you say that because it is true. You are here because of her. You’re breathing because of her. You’re alive and well because of her. Yes, you lost a leg, but would have preferred to lose your life?” she asked.

Even with her making sense, I found myself still pissed at Bella. The more I looked at my leg, the angrier I got. The more I tried to wiggle the toes that weren’t there, the more frustrated I got. The more I thought about how difficult walking was going to be, the more I panicked. My life was never going to be the same.

“I’m a man, mother. A black man. Black men are supposed to stand tall and strong. How the fuck am I going to do that if my ass can’t even stand?” I wondered. Never in my life did I think I would be at a point in my life where I felt weak. The only thing that was meant to make men weak were woman, and Bella had already done that to me. After she made me weak, she made me stronger. I don’t see myself getting stronger in this situation.

“Son listen to me,” she started, reaching for my hand. She held it close to her chest and gazed into my eyes. “You are the strongest black man I know and because you are black, you will get through this. Our people have been through hell for years and we’re still here. If we would have given up a long time ago, we would probably be extinct. You will get through this but in order to do that, you need Bella.”

“She is your back bone. She is your rib. She is where you draw your strength from. Both her and your heirs. You need her by your side while you figure out your next step. Don’t fight with her, Adonis, please. You have to remember don’t ever fight each other over a problem. It’s you and her against the problem. Fight together,” she advised.

I didn’t want to listen to my mother when she threw advice at me. For some reason, my pride was bigger than ever right now. It could have been because of my leg. It could have been because I felt weak. It also could have been because I felt cheated. I had fought so hard to get Bella back and I felt like she didn’t fight hard enough for me.

  Bella

I paced the floor outside of Adonis’ room. I couldn’t stop fidgeting with my hand, I had peeled the crap out of my hang nails. My mind was running a million miles per hour thinking of what was going to happen next. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt Adonis. I thought he would be happy, but I knew once he saw his leg, he would flip a wig. He did more than that. I saw anger in his eyes when he looked at me. He hated what I did to him.

“Bella, stop pacing the damn floor. You gone burn a whole in this bitch and you gone make Adonis even more pissed off. This floor got to be made out of elephant skin or something. Shit smooth as fuck,” Twan spat.

“Ugh, Twan shut up. I’m nervous and I can’t stop moving. I’m supposed to be pumping for the babies and I can’t even get milk out because I’m so tense,” I expressed.

“Can you at least pace the floor somewhere else? You’re making me dizzy and I feel like I’m getting motion sickness just by watching you,” Leah complained.

“What part of, I can’t don’t you understand? My husband just woke up to his leg being gone and I’m the reason for that. I took a part of him and he probably feels like less of a man. I may have ruined him, I’m worried, and I’m scared. So, no Leah, I can’t stop pacing the floor and I can’t do it anywhere else!” I snapped.

The hallway fell silent. Tears built up in my eyes thinking out the many outcomes. I thought about what would happen if Adonis never recovered. He could go through a deep depression and never get out of it. He would blame me. He wouldn’t be able to look at me or worse, love me. He had the power to kill me for what I did.

“This is all my fault. He’s going to hate me forever,” I cried.

“Bella, no he’s not. Adonis fought so hard to get you back. Yes, it’s hard right now because he just woke up, but he’ll get better. He’ll see the bigger picture and get over it.” Leah attempted to make me feel better.

“Leah, the nigga ain’t got a damn leg. The nigga might not ever get over this shit. People gone start calling him the legless King,” Twan laughed. “Wait, nah what about King leg me long time,” he joked again, laughing as hard as before.

“Twan this is not funny!” I barked.

“Aye don’t be yelling at me. I’m just trying to lighten up the mood because this shit sad and depressing. You know our roles. Leah is the passionate one and I’m the humor. I’m supposed to make you laugh and help ease this shit out.”

“Well, that won’t work this time Twan. I can’t laugh while the love of my life is sitting in his room with half a leg. This is all my fault. I shouldn’t have ever signed those papers,” I mumbled under my breath.

My body jumped when I heard the door open. Estella walked out with a graceful smile on her face. I swear that woman could commit murder, and no one would ever know. “Bella, just give him some time. He wants to be alone right now but when he’s ready, he’ll talk to you. He loves you too much to silence you for long.”

“What am I supposed to do while he sits in that room and builds his hate up for me?” I quizzed, not looking for a real answer.

“You wait and give him time. I would have done the same to save his life, but you have to give him time to come to terms with himself. In the meantime, you can tend to your country and tend to your heirs. You can start by pumping.” She smiled before walking away.

“Man, if I didn’t have feelings for Zara’s ass, I would definitely try and hit.”

“Ugh, Twan! That’s Adonis’ mother. She like forty something,” Leah cringed.

“The older the berry, the sweet the juice,” he shot back, lustfully watching E
stella walk away. “And she got ass. Umph.” He shook his hand while licking his lips. For some reason, that made me snicker a little bit. “What? Do a nigga detect laughter coming from the sad puppy?”

“Ew, Twan shut up.” I shooed him away still laughing.

“Hey, how about we spend some time together? Amir is off being substitute King while Adonis is down. I don’t do anything but eat, sleep, and practically rape my husband because of my hormones. I could use some friend time.”

“Yea, me too. Zara been running a nigga dry. I’m starting to shoot out dust when I cum.”

Leah and I both burst out laughing together. “Wow, Twan. You really like Zara, huh?” I quizzed.

“Yea. That’s my little princess. She bougie as hell but I can fuck with it.” He shrugged.

“Good, that way we have something to talk about when we have this little friend’s day. Yaaay, okay meet me in the-”

“Oh, I can’t. I uh… I have something to do,” I blurted. They both looked at me suspiciously.

“Like what? You’re too tense to nurse and Adonis is laid up in the bed. You literally have nothing else to do,” Leah pointed out.

“Uh, well that’s not all I could be doing. I have to get some stuff done for… for myself. You know what, I just need some alone time. It’s a lot going on, so I’ll take a rain check on the friend thing. Maybe tomorrow or something. Okay, bye, bye now.” I hurried off before they started asking more questions. I was a horrible liar and usually they could see right through me. I had to hurry up and get to my destination before it got too late.

I went to my room and got dressed. I then snuck off to Zara’s room. After knocking on the door, I entered. “Are you ready?” I asked her.

“Yes. I’m ready. Guard Tibby is out in the back. Let’s go before anyone sees us.” She grabbed a pair of keys and then we rushed off to the back. Thank god no one saw us when we got into the car with Tibby.

“Thank you so much for doing this guard Tibby. I promise no one will ever know you’re doing this for me,” I assured him.
