  At some point in his life my father had stopped feeling the need to explain himself—either to others or, more importantly, to himself. Without the burden of always feeling that he needed to justify his life to others, he was free to be a man without pretense. It was that freedom that he had spent a lifetime bestowing to Jenny, and that he had now in only a matter of days bestowed to me.
