As a part of the Steele Riders, Dr. Joseph “Doc” Simmons knows that things aren’t easy for those in power. Being one of the most successful motorcycle clubs in the region, there’s always someone eager to dethrone, butcher, and bury them.
One of those very attempts on their existence led Sophia into Doc’s arms.
Sophia’s swept in and out of his life, and while young, he can’t deny the way she made him feel. From the second he meets her, he can't stop himself from wanting the fabled happily ever after. Unfortunately, life just doesn’t work like that and trouble comes beating on their door, forcing Doc to push her away.
Can love last when the timing is all wrong?
Can they survive the danger constantly lurking around the corner?
Can he keep her safe?
The Riders aren’t above taking out threats, and that’s what the Doc will do to claim the woman he loves.
This is the fourth book in the series.
Chapter One
Doc
I’m in the middle of filling out my patient’s digital medical chart with the software system Cyber created when my coworker knocks on the door frame. "Come in,” I say, turning around to look at her. She’s only been here a short time, but she’s a great OB/GYN for the clinic. At the moment, she doesn’t have as many clients as I do, but I’m sure that they’ll be filling up soon. The prez of the Steele Riders has found the woman he’s going to marry, so I’m sure she’ll be treating her soon. “What can I help you with?”
“Dr. Simmons, do you have time to see my patient's son? He needs a sports physical today and they just moved here from Dallas two weeks ago." Steeleville’s a small town south of Dallas, but we’re growing, so we get a lot of new arrivals.
"When is he coming in?” I’m done for the day and don’t care to wait around. Steeleville’s just a blip on the map, so it won’t take him long to get here if he really wants it done.
"He's already here." Well, hell, that’s even better.
"Send him on through to room number three. I just finished with my last patient. I have some paperwork to handle, and then I'll be right with him."
"Great. Thanks. I owe you one."
"Not a problem.” She taps the frame with the smile and walks off to the front where our medical assistant works on the last of the day’s filing.
An hour later, I’m completely done and heading out. “Goodnight, Tina.” She smiles up at me with that youthful grin. She’s twenty-three or something like that and has been working for us for the past three months. I don’t really know the woman, but she appears capable. Dr. Evans hired her.
As I head to my SUV, I get a call from Blade. “What’s up?”
“We have a problem. Can you meet us at the club?”
“Sure. I’m on my way now.” I end the call and hop in my SUV. It’s a reinforced beast that Wrench modified at his shop last year.
It doesn’t take long to get to the clubhouse near the outskirts of town. When I pull up, there are several guys huddled around the entrance. I don’t like the look of the movements.
I jump out. “Thanks for making it, Doc.”
I shake their hands and then ask, “What’s going on? Did someone get hurt?”
“Not yet, but Boomer’s in-laws are about to be nabbed up by the fuckers who beat up his girl. Someone sent them tickets to visit Crystal. Her family is on their way, thinking it was a gift from Boomer. We’re going to snatch up the family before they get abducted. It’s probably going to get hairy.”
“Okay. Well, then, you’ll need a doctor. Let’s roll.”
“Don’t you have to be at the hospital tonight?” Cyber says.
“Yes. So let’s get this show on the fucking road so I can get to work quickly.”
We ride out to Boomer’s house just in time to roll with him. I drive us to the airport so Boomer can just jump out and snatch them before anyone gets a chance to grab them. I’ve brought my medical kit in case there’s any need for medical assistance.
A piercing sensation mired in rage courses through me as I think about the intent of the kidnappers. Poor Crystal. She’s been through a lot since she’s been here, and this is trouble none of us needs. They have something special that’s so full of love, and Boomer deserves happiness. I don’t want my brother to suffer, so I’ll do what I have to. I’ve gone to war alongside him; I can do it again.
As soon as we get to the airport, Boomer finds them and brings them to the truck. Everything happens in a flash as three people jump in the back along with Boomer and we take off. Despite the chaos surrounding us, I see her. She’s got to be Crystal’s little sister, but I’m already planning on making her mine.
Sitting between her parents looking radiantly beautiful and utterly frightened, I ache to wipe all of Sophia’s unhappiness away. Feeling my stare on her, she lifts her gaze and our eyes meet in the rearview mirror. As I steal momentary glances back at her while trying to not crash, I witness the fear slip away from those gorgeous blues.
Damn, she’s stunning, but I have a mission to complete. I need to get my woman to safety. By the time we reach the clubhouse, she’s smiling at me and my heart’s thumping ridiculously out of control.
Once we’re out of danger, I lead them from our clubhouse to Boomer’s house. Stealing every second I can, I walk alongside her and memorize every detail of
her face and the sound of her voice like I wouldn’t get to know her soon enough.
Damn work.
***
Sophia, Sophia, Sophia, I mentally chant as I drive away from the most beautiful woman in the world. As a doctor, I do rotations at Dallas Regional Hospital once a week, and until now, I’ve never let it bother me. In fact, I loved it—that is, until I met her. She’s got a hold on me that I’m not sure I can ignore. I’ve never before felt this insane pull to do whatever she asks of me.
She’s gorgeous, and it’s hard to not see visions of pretty little babies just like their mother. Sophia only comes up to the middle of my chest with long, curly blonde hair and bright blues that tantalize me beyond belief. I want to pull her into my arms, kiss her until we both lose control, and fill her up with every inch of me until she’s begging to come.
There’s just one major fucking setback to our future together. Sophia’s barely eighteen, and I’m almost thirty-two. A few more years’ difference, and I could be her father. That thought is the only thing that shelves the lust-filled visions I have of her riding my cock. Even though I barely spoke a handful of words to her, she’s all I can think about as I make my way to work.
I’m rushing to the ER to handle several gunshot victims from the east side of Dallas. As a former medic in the military, learning to treat and deal with bullet wounds became my specialty. That skill made my presence at the trauma unit invaluable. Unfortunately, the warm day brought out all the damn crazies and a lot more patients to the hospital. My day and night end up being insanely busy and by the time I get to come home, I’ve put in sixteen hours.
I rub my hand over my eyes as I lean against the break room wall. “Dr. Simmons, why don’t you get a rest in before you go? Or do you need a ride? I could give you one.”
“Thank you, Nurse Alma. I’m going to bunk up for an hour and then drive myself home.” She’s a nice woman and always worries that we don’t get enough rest. My sister thinks Nurse Alma has a crush on me, but I don’t see it. She’s nice to every doctor. I told Sammie that she doesn’t treat me any different than all of the other sleep-deprived physicians.
In all honesty, I’m fucking beat and could sleep for a week. After what happened yesterday and my adrenaline cresting pretty much since we drove to the airport, I’m starting to feel the fatigue.
I lay down on one of the twin beds left for the staff to rest. Even though I should go home and check on Sammie, I choose to stay at work. I need a power nap so I don’t crash on the way home.
Finally the thoughts of Sophia enter my head uninterrupted, and I welcome them. Seeing the sadness in her eyes to see me leave made it easier to go. It’s a strange feeling to crave her affection. Most of my life I’ve been cold, methodical, and most definitely never in love. Now here I am, dreaming of a woman nearly half my age and wondering what awaits our next fifty years. I let that lull me into a nice sleep.
After an hour, I feel refreshed enough to make the hour-long ride back to my house in Steeleville, which is about ten minutes from Boomer’s. As I enter my home, the smell of bacon hits my nose. My sister must be cooking. Just what I need after the long day. I stroll into the kitchen and greet my sister.
“Joe, you’re just in time,” she says, smiling up at me from the pan of eggs and potatoes.
Breathing it in causes my stomach to rumble. I think I managed to scarf down some fruit and a sandwich yesterday. “Thanks, Sammie. I need this.”
“I heard.” She loads the plate in front of me and shakes her head.
After swallowing a bite, I respond, “Yeah, you have two guys that will escort you around. Don’t give them shit, please.”
“I’m not. I promise. Especially after all that happened yesterday. I’m spoiled, not stupid.” She hands me a glass of milk, smirking the entire time. “Besides, I wasn’t talking about the shootout. I was talking about Crystal’s little sister.”
“Oh. Yeah. Um. I’m hungry,” I grumble, stealing another mouthful, ignoring her penetrating eyes. We have the same set, so I know how easy it is to submit to their will.
“So you’re going to avoid the whole conversation?” She tosses me a sideways glance as she plops down on the stool next to me.
“That’s what it looks like. Listen, Sammie, I don’t know what’s going on with Sophia. She’s barely legal, and I’ve had one conversation with her.”
In all honesty, I’m doing my best to maintain control and not ride over to Boomer’s place to see her although I can barely keep my eyes open. Hell, even mentioning her name does things to my body that I’d forgotten all about. The memory of our hands meeting sends my dick throbbing against my scrubs.
I don’t have control over myself, and that in itself is a dangerous thing. Never in my life have I felt this passionate about something, even saving lives. Sophia is that something special that only comes once in a lifetime. “Excuse me, sis, but I need a shower and then hit the bed. Thanks for breakfast. You have no idea how bad I needed it.”
“Anytime, bro. Get some sleep.” She pats my shoulder and starts cleaning up the mess.
“Please be careful out there.”
“I will. I’m not due to leave for another hour, so those henchmen will have to wait.”
“And they will. Love you,” I say, waving at her as I head to my bedroom. On days like these, I wished my bedroom was on the first floor. As soon as I shower, I slip on some boxer briefs and hit my pillow hard, dreaming of my woman.
Chapter Two
Sophia
“There you are.” Joe’s voice, smooth and deep, hits my ears and my heart beats out of control. The sound of his timber consumes me before I actually see him. He is one hell of a sexy specimen. I didn’t know doctors could be so hot, but Joe is different. Everything about the man makes my mouth water. From his dark brown hair and caramel-colored eyes to the way he wears that two-day-old scruff perfectly along his chiseled jaw has turned me into a messy puddle.
I should stay away from him because we’ll be heading back to Tennessee soon, but I don’t want to go. It’s crazy how one moment can change your existence and when it does, nothing else feels the same. Meeting him was that for me.
People would think it’s being almost kidnapped and then fleeing from a hail of bullets, but instead, my mind can only think about Joe. I know the danger that’s involved in the world of bikers and stuff, but none of that matters. I’m young and naïve, but we only live once and I almost didn’t make it here today, so maybe I’ll let it all go for him.
I turn my head and look up from the book in my hands, slamming it closed but still holding onto it. He’s in a white dress shirt with the first three buttons open, though it wasn’t enough to see if he had a lot of hair on his chest or if it was bare. My bet is that he has at least a manly tuft over his muscular pecs. Immediately, I picture his hair tapering off as it goes to his stomach just above his jeans. My eyes quickly move back to his face, which is covered with that dark scruff that gets me all worked up.
His smile catches me off guard, reminding me that I have to respond. “I’ve been here. It’s you that disappeared on me.” My voice cracks as I choke on the truth of my words. I’m hurt that he left me. Granted, he was at work, but it still hurt my young, innocent heart. It’s been a day since I saw him, and he looks even sexier than before. I bet all the nurses love him. I wonder how many of them he has banged. Ugh, now I’ve managed to piss myself off.
“Sorry, babe. But I had to do a rotation at the hospital.”
Did he have to call me that? I blush and set my book on the side table next to the sofa. “There’s a local hospital?”
“In Dallas. Can I sit down?”
“It’s not my house. I don’t care.” I try to appear indifferent, but I’m doing a terrible job at it.
He sits down next to me, giving me not an inch of room. Our knees touch lightly, causing me to become even more flustered, and he takes advantage of it. He leans in and whispers in my ear, “But you do care, Sophia.”
/>
I can’t believe how turned on I am. I should punch him in the nuts for being so damn full of himself, but all I want is to be full of him. At my age, I should have had my first sexual encounter by now, but I haven’t; at least not fully. I’ve had a boyfriend—once. My brothers and father are overly protective. I want to give him something I’ve been holding on to, and that scares me. I take a calming breath and indignantly answer, “Dr. Simmons, I don’t know what you’re playing at, but I leave in less than a week to go home, and I’m not going to be your plaything.”
“In less than a week?” He looks like I’ve smacked him across the face.
My heart thumps in my chest because I feel the same way. I don’t want our relationship to be short. In fact, I never want it to end. “Yes. Well, technically we’re going to Vegas for Crystal and Garrett’s wedding in a couple of days, and then we head home.”
“I’ll be going to Vegas as well.”
“Fine.” I shrug, trying to pretend that I’m not interested or excited to spend more time with him, which is total bullshit. I’m internally dancing around.
He reaches over, grazing his strong fingers along my jaw. “You make me want things, Sophia.” The confession is low and full of passion.
My heart’s pace speeds up and my pussy clenches. I give him my own honesty. “I want them, too.”
“Be careful because if I have my way…” he slides his hand into my hair, dragging my face closer to his when he continues “…you’ll be tied to me in every way, swelling with our first of many kids.”
I bite the edge of my bottom lip. “Um…in that case…”
“Ah, hey, Doc,” Crystal says, stepping into the room. Startling like I’ve been caught doing something wrong, I jump back on the sofa, creating distance between Joe and me. The loss of his hands on my face is immediately felt and I want his touch back.
“Hello, Crystal,” he grits out, eliciting a smile from her. She’s onto us, but I’m not sure what she’s onto because we’ve only spoken a few words to each other. I’m going to deny this thing between us until I can understand what he wants from me.
