“So, did your dad leave this behind?” I asked, running my hand over the buttery smooth leather as he drove us down the road.

“Yep. Told me to consider it my graduation present from him.”

“How sweet,” I said dryly. “At least it’s a great car.”

He reached over and linked our fingers together and brought our joined hands up to his lips. “You are beautiful, Mace.”

I brushed at my skirt and flashed a smile. “Yeah, I clean up pretty good, don’t I?”

“You’re always beautiful. Tonight, you’re radiatingly beautiful.”

I laughed. “I’m pretty sure radiatingly is not a word, but thank you. You’re sweet.”

When we pulled up to the front of the hotel where the prom was being held, I took in the sight of many stretch limos and hummers and girls in brightly colored dresses lined up in front of us already.

“I thought we would be one of the first ones to show up.” I frowned.

“We’ve already done our soundcheck. I wanted to give you the full experience.”

My jaw dropped as I turned to take him in. He looked so good in his white jacket and shirt, black bow tie, and snug black pants. His hair was styled up in his rocker bun, as he called it, and the white rose I gave him as a boutonnière stuck up from one of his lapels.

“You went to all that trouble for me?”

He reached over and caressed my cheek. “When are you going to realize you’re worth moving mountains for?”

A valet came and opened my door, breaking the moment. The hotel was typical as far as nicer ones go with marble floors, gold accents, and a broad staircase that led up to the ballroom level. Cam linked our hands together as we made our way up the steps and stood in line for the awkward prom picture that everyone had to take.

As we made our way into the ballroom to the sounds of music being piped through speakers, I couldn’t help but notice all the eyes on us. For a split second, I worried that they were mocking me, whispering behind covered mouths about how a loser like me could be with a winner like Cam. However, upon closer expression, I realized I saw nothing but smiles and then they went back to what they were doing. As if we weren’t a big deal.

Cam led me across the dance floor to the right side of the stage.

“I’m sorry I won’t be able to dance with you much, but you’re all mine for tonight. Remember that.” He cupped my face and kissed me in front of students, teachers, and parents…and I didn’t care.

I smiled dazedly up at him as he broke the kiss. “All yours forever.”

He handed me a folded up piece of paper and winked before joining his bandmates for their pre-show huddle. With careful movements, I unfolded the paper and saw that it was my list, but the last one had been crossed out. What had originally been, “Fake Your Way to Love” had been changed to, “Fall in Love With My Best Friend.”

I looked up to find Cam smiling at me, and I knew in that moment no matter where life took us, we would always be together.

“I love you, too,” I mouthed.

As I stood at my senior prom, watching my best friend turned boyfriend charge out onto the stage with an explosion of music and lights, I realized, in a crazy roundabout way, I’d done it. I’d landed my book boyfriend, and he was more than I could’ve ever imagined or hoped for.

“This one goes out to my beautiful girlfriend. Thank you for taking me as is. Always and forever.”

And he started up on a song I’d never heard. It was the song Wen Li had caught him working on. It was Winter’s princess song. It wasn’t a slow-paced ballad, but instead an excited beat of hope, love, and anticipation. Tears welled in my eyes, and I knew then that I’d never loved anyone more than I loved Camden Davis.

I see the world in her eyes

So much hope and so much life

Hold me close and never leave

I’ll be your king and you my queen

A love like ours will last for ever

I’ll slay your dragons for all time

Let me be your shining hero

Because you’re the one who saved my life

The song continued, but I didn’t hear the words. I only had eyes and ears for him.

  About the Author

As a child, K.R. Grace had an overactive imagination. When it was obvious she wasn’t going to change anytime soon, her mom shoved a pen and paper in her hand and said, “Write it down.” So, at the age of eight, her first story was born, and the writing hasn’t stopped since. When she’s not running with wolves, sleeping with bears, or flying with falcons, she can be found checking out local bands or watching movies about things that go “boo” in the night. She has a dog that is afraid of his own shadow and a cat that was a mob leader in a former life.
